Home sweet home agian. Guess what? it is raining in NORCAL. I think I brought the clouds home with me this morning. We got in around 6am. Nice to be home for Football Sunday.

So- Hey Blue and Tux, sorry I didn't see you guys at the game. But I think I was behind the scooter on friday when Sabine and I rolled into town. Hope to see you guys in two weeks. No trip this coming weekend. So Gig take care of the Kid for me. I will be listening.

Sabine and I had a great weekend. Thanks agian to Glen and the crew for doing such a great job at the tailgate party. You guys are awesome. And thanks to the gentleman who bbq'd the thin steaks, they were very good.

Don't let up on the gas Cat's keep it going this coming weekend.

Pound the Rock Baby and let them Purple Frisbee's fly.

Rain in SoCal as well....too bad the Cats couldn't have had this weather for their trips down....might have made things a little more comfortable for them!

These two post got me to wondering about something. After every game I check the stats of my favorite team, Linfield of course, and then I'll look at the recap of some of the other teams also. What I was wondering was who puts together all the stats? And how do they do it so quickly? Anyway, I would like to thank those tireless "stat gurus' who keep the rest of us informed and updated each week. If I could give you karma I would. Keep up the good work and THANK YOU once again.

GO CATS!
I believe there is this contraption called a computer that the stats get entered into and this thing apparently formats the stats into nice rows and columns which make it easier for us to read ;)  (but still--thanks to the guy that puts the stats into the computer each play and then uploads them to the web!) :) :) :)

I had no idea how this worked either until I sat up in the press box the last two games.  The guys you need to thank are the SIDs, and they have an unbelievably difficult job.  Basically, they've got at least three assistants with their eyes on the field at all times, who watch each play and call out the play (run or pass), direction, yardage, and the numbers of the players involved.  The SID then has to enter all that into the computer before the next play starts.  Penalties throw everything off, since there are different rules for recording yardage according to the penalty that's called.

When more than one player has the same number, it's even more ridiculous.  For example, at yesterday's Willamette/UPS game, the Loggers' quarterback is #4, Duncan White.  One of UPS' starting cornerbacks is also #4, Nasser Abdelasul.  He gets recorded in the system as #4D (defense).  So when one of the spotters calls out that #4 makes a tackle, he really means that it's a tackle for #4D.  But when the spotters call out #4D, they could really be talking about the Loggers' other starting cornerback, #40, Roy Fuchigami.

Up until the last two weeks, I had no idea about the amount of work that goes into the stats.  Thank your school's SID sometime - they deserve it.

That is a little more complicated than I imagined it!  Especially with the multiple numbers--must have driven the guys crazy the last two weeks with Linfield and Willamette scoring big and getting everybody (and their multiple numbers) into the game!

The SIDs and their staff do an incredible job. Besides everything BCPress mentioned, they print out stats for the radio / webcast folks to read to the listeners at the end of each quarter. At Menlo they are even kind enough to give me a print out of the quick stats for when I send in photos

WOW! I'm exhausted just reading about the amount of work the stats crew does. Can't imagine how hectic it was during the Pacific @ Linfield game with so many players getting in the game. Keeping track of everyone had to be difficult.  You guys came through with your answers, I gave each of you karma, and I would also like to thank Dahlby for his message to me concerning my question and his invite.

I gotta say that whoever is voting in this poll is putting some thought into it.  Too often there is very little adjustment and if you start out high you can maintain that even with a loss(es).  I felt that another win should put us ahead of Cal Lu, but I didn't expect it to happen.  I'm also pleasantly surprised to see the voters jump Wartburg ahead of the two in their conference since they are undefeated and beat Coe who beat Central.  I don't know much about alot of the other teams except the obvious ones at the top so I won't comment on them.  Of course, this is all just armchair crap for us old men.  The only thing that really matters is winning the conference and to do that we'll have to beat Linfield this week, + more.  Beating Linfield is going to be very tough but hopefully the team is starting to believe they can and can pull the upset off at home.  Wish I could be there but I'll have to settle for post pattern updates on my phone as Saturday is my oldest sons' 8th birthday.

I was pleased to see Wartburg jump a bunch of teams in the most recent poll.  Having watched them this weekend and Linfield two weeks ago, I believe the pollsters were correct in putting the Wildcats ahead of my Knights.  They are both good teams, but at this stage of the season I think Linfield would take Wartburg in a best of seven series.

How diplomatic.... :D

Glad you had a good time at the CatDome Warthog!

Tuxguy

warthog,
It was nice to meet you at the CatDome, I wish Mrs. Tux and I  would have had more time to talk
football but had family issues that took priority.

We may get that match up you talk about, and I agree it should be one  heck of a game.
But, first things first.
One game at a time.
Lute week!!
what's the saying GHC ?

Go Wildcats!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

coco

Yeah, what Tuxguy said -- one game at a time. There's still plenty of season left.
It's good to see Wartburg get some deserved recognition and make the Top 25. The Central/Wartburg game will be the usual crucial contest, it appears.

Friday and Saturday were great, with golf, tailgating, the game, then dinner and casino night. Homecoming gets more fun each year, even when there's a small turnout for the game.

Sorry I didn't get to see PPJ and GHC on Saturday.

HELP WANTED:

Looking for Pollsters for a "soon to be unveiled" D3 TOP 25 FAN POLL.

Publishing site: www.uwwfootball.blogspot.com

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Commit to submit a ballot ranking the D3 Teams 1-25 by stated deadline. I'm thinking that will be midnight on Mondays.
2. Research the teams and try to be as unbiased as possible in ranking them.
3. Think through your own philosophy as to how much to weigh previous ranking, won/loss record, your sense as to who would win head to head, national performances in recent years, quality wins, and whatever reasonable criteria you care to choose.
4. Submit a ballot EVERY WEEK by the deadline. Missing a deadline will be cause to forfeit your spot. Create and submit your ballot BEFORE viewing the D3football.com poll. You can look at previous weeks polls to get you started if you are having a hard time filling out the last few slots.

PURPOSE OF POLL

This poll is to promote meaningful and fun discussion on d3boards.com.  It is simply something that will be fun to contrast with D3football.com's poll. D3football.com's poll is the one legitimate poll we have in D3 football in my opinion.  This poll is not even intended to become #2. I just think it would be an interesting point of comparison and discussion.

HOW TO APPLY

Send me a private message. In your message indicate:
1. you are applying to be a pollster.
2. What team/conference you follow.
3. Whether you can submit a poll as early as this Thursday. (That is not mandatory, if everyone can we may do one this week).

WHO WILL BE CHOSEN?

The first 25 respondents will be our initial group of pollsters.  This group will remain the D3 FOOTBALL FAN POLL TOP 25 pollsters unless they resign their position or miss a deadline.  Pollsters, I will never post your names on the boards.  If you choose to, that is fine. If you are beyond the first 25 responses, your name will be placed on a "waiting list".  If there are fewer than 25 respondents by midnight on Wednesday, we will go with what we have and continue to have "open" slots to be filled.

Remember FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!  ;)

PLU jumped up a few spots and to a more appropriate ranking ahead of CLU (until next week). :)

I have no issues with the rankings of CLU and PLU, in terms of the Lutes being ranked higher. I don't think it should have taken a 5-0 start to earn them that. I do however think that the Linfield ranking is a little lofty.

Not that they don't deserve to be ranked where they are - there should just be a smaller gap between the team that beat them and their current spot. In my opinion I don't see a 2 place jump as justifiable this week. A win against a 5-0 team that has a win against another top 25 team would justify that - so this week may help clear the picture.

National rankings are nothing to hang your hat on obviously (NWC/SCIAC rankings are the only ones that can guarantee a playoff spot), but as a fan it is interesting to see where the rest of the country matches up with your team.

Now for the spirit of conversation - IF (as much as I hate IFs) Linfield gets beat by PLU ... can PLU secure and Autobid (assuming they beat Pacific & LC)? In the case that there is a 3 way tie what is the NWC's solution?

Could be an interesting shuffle ...
