Welcome back (509)Rat. Missed you on the pick 'ems board.

I hate to poke at the West Region team (because they do it the right way by not filling up 1st team with 35 QB's, etc) but one NWC player on there that made me turn my head just a little was UPS's Adam Kniffin.

Yeah, the dude had monster stats in the Loggers pass HEAVY offense but here is my question:  If you had one WR spot to fill out on your team, out of these NWC receivers would you take Kniffin over any of these guys?

Scott Schoettgen, Willamette
Greg Ford, PLU
Chris Slezak, Linfield

You have it....but I have to be honest in my opinion....

Hey, I'll try to keep this going...

How about if he would have been on the Boehme team? How would he have performed?

Well...he probably would have avg more than 9.9 yards per catch (lowest of top 10 WR in conference)...no doubt he'd be a very good player at any NWC school but just don't think he was the premiere or scariest receiver in the conference.  (Scott Schoettgen)

I'm going to point back at the all-conference team, where all four of those guys were first team (and one more, for a total of five). I am sure some are better than the others but it would be nice if the coaches would offer their opinion.

You still got that lateral speed step 11; nice move to avoid bricks. ;D

Bias aside, I knew WC11 respected and feared Scott S until we knocked him out of the game. So there's his vote. A biased vote........

"but it would be nice if the coaches would offer their opinion."

All coaches would tend to be biased if asked their opinions, especially if it's about their own players.  Does the NWC have a policy where the coach cannot vote for his player?  Of course, this would then cause some background politicking and horse-trading to convince other coaches about whom to vote for.

Also, are there other knowledgeable and objective third-party voters available?  Are there any criteria for choosing a player other than stats?  The player's leadership role in the team's effectiveness, or impact on how successful the team has been may be subjective but just as real.  Is it the best player or simply a good player on a more successful team?

River,

As far as I know it's just the coaches voting and as we all know over the years they have done some curious things.  I just don't get why they need 3 QB's and 5 WR's on the first team when we have a 7 team conference. A school can press release about their QB getting selected as the NWC's 2nd team but really he's the 4th best QB out of 7 teams.

Just look at the Pac-10 all-conference team:  http://www.pac-10.org/portals/7/images/Football/WklyRel/2010FBAll-Pac-10release.pdf

One first team QB in the conference that has Luck, Thomas, Foles, Barkley, and Locker.  Pretty crazy that the Pac-10 can pick 1 QBs and 2 WRs but the NWC can't.

IMO...I just think the conference AD's need to create by-laws in how the all-conference team is set up (number of players, position groups, etc) and be done with it.  It's obvious the coaches, as a whole, are incapable of making tough choices when putting this team together.

I ask this in all seriousness and without a hint of sarcasm Pat. If you really want the coaches input, how do you put Tommy Becker on an All-Region team when he was 2nd team All MIAC, especially when other 1st Team All MIAC players at the same position weren't named all region (one from his own team)? Honest question.

Pat Coleman

Fair question -- don't have an answer other than the voters felt differently. The nominations were odd there, too.

And the MIAC is another all-of-the-conference team -- 16 starters on defense, 17 on offense plus the P and K -- so I don't even look at it when filling out my personal ballot.
