Come on Bearkitties...guess I shouldn't have just assumed because there name is "Willamette" that they'd be a top NWC team. Could be a crazy year in the NWC.

Welcome to the Redlands football family Coach Good. You called a hell of game tonight and it was refreshing to watch the offensive game plan and adjustments. The defense wasn't too shabby either - overall a great effort by the whole program. Enjoy it tonight and start getting ready for those stinkin Rats!!

After their big win against North Central, the Bulldogs seem pumped up and looking to nail some rat hides against their wall this year.   ;)

Sorry for river's sake that WU lost a big one against a WIAC school.
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

Tough day for the NWC. But, all three games came down to plays in the last few seconds. Made for some exciting football.

It was exciting.   The WU/UWSP game could have been more exciting if our offense had performed better.   However, that may have had something to do with THEIR defense.   That game could've gone either way -- I'm sure that can be said of the Whitworth/Chapman game as well.   Did anyone on here watch the Pacific game?

Unlike bbaddict, I like to actually watch the games instead of simply basing all of my commentary off of statistics and point spreads. Whitworth Offense did not look good. It was not something Chapman was doing as much as it was poor execution. I think the same could be said for the Chapman offense. Basically, both offenses made the other teams' defenses look better than I think they are. That being said, knowing Whitworth's D would start slow this year with all the inexperience, they had a few great plays in the secondary that kept them in the ball game. Kudos to those kids. And great job by the Chapman coaches dialing up pressure when they realized they could have their way with the Whit Oline on obvious passing downs. They really put the Whitworth offense in some bad spots, late in the game on crucial 2nd and 3rd downs. Of course, it's a lot easier to do when Tully has no short to intermediate passing game to speak of...but thats another story for another time. Maybe that man could watch the replay of the Boise St game from last night, not one completion for Moore that was longer than 20 yards.

Two very evenly matched teams indeed, and Chapman showed their stones when it mattered. But that doesn't mean you should be happy with your teams' performance...unless you are used to rooting for Willamette basketball I guess??  :o

(509) Rat:

I realize that the Rat team that played last night is not the same type of team that had totally dominated Chapman in the four previous meetings, but.......you did have several highlights, and although winning now is always important, you do have the foundation to be a very good team down the road. For example:

Imagine being a Freshman and not really knowing that you would be the starting QB, or even making the trip until a couple of days before the game. I thought Hill showed great maturity in the short time he played. Check the box score....zero turnovers for him. I was on the sideliines, and he took some real hits, got up and went on. He wasn't afraid to take a hit. Give him time, he will hold his own. And remember, he moved the ball.

Your other QB (Peterson) is also a freshman, but older and has a higher level of experience ( pro basesball)
that will help his learning curve.

Yes, Chapman did make halftime adjustments that kept the Rat offense to around 80 yads total in the second half.

Whitworth has a couple of backs that can make a breakaway play. There were three or four last night that got the Rat offense out of a hole.

Don't under estimate Chapman's defense....the secondary covered Rat receivers very well, and that did limit the long passes....something that doesn't show on the video.

I did question a series of downs in the fourth quarter where Chapman stopped a fake field goal attempt, that would have forced Chapman to score a TD, which would have been hard to come by. It would have been a chip shot. How do you rate your kicker? I couldn't tell bcause there were no Rat FG attempts.

Well coached teams have few penalties, there were only 6 (for 55 yards) against the Rats and two (for only 20 yards) for Chapman. Additionally there were not many trnovers at all.

It was an interesting game for the first of the year for both teams. The Rats have a couple of weeks to learn, while Chapman doesn't play again for three weeks.

Whitworth had good fan support in the stands, and they are vocal. It was a clean game with no cheap shots.
All in all, I enjoyed the game, but anymore like this, and I don't know if the ulcers, or the heart, will explode first.

Keep the faith, it'll take a while. Whitworth may not win every game, but I don't see them gettng blown out.
They will represent your school well. Your players are real gentlemen!

There you go again, Rat, making assumptions!   I did watch part of the Whitworth/Chapman game -- wasn't the greatest video, but when I started watching Whitworth was winning.   And the announcers (from Chapman) sounded like they weren't expecting Chapman to win.   That was the basis of my "close game" comment.    Guess you got creamed by someone "Whitworth never loses to."   Can't remember who made THAT statement, but it was recent.   I attended the WU game, so I don't know what you're talking about basing comments on stats.  You don't need to be nasty to me just because your team lost a game you expected them to win.

As for your comment about WU BBX, that's a different board, but, again, you soon WILL have the wonderful experience of re-building without Hayford & Fortier!  Hope that works out for you! NOT

A lay over in Dallas and was surprised by all the lime green and neon yellow (no black fan gear though). Then I remembered and got off a "Don't feel so bad, LINFIELD has not lost a game this year." Met with standard "who" and at least a "Have they played?"

Then I see a Willamette shirt and this guy's not sour because his daughter just started as a freshman there. He knew the UWSP score though!

Whitworth_Fan

Hopefully Whitworth can bounce back this week against Pomona-Pitzer.    There were some definite positives last week against Chapman and some things the team needs to improve on.  Chapman did a great job of shutting down the rushing game after the first quarter and applying more pressure on the QB.  Hopefully Whitworth can improve those areas this week and come out strong this Saturday.

Good article in the Willamette Collegian this week breaking down the Bearcat Offense and Defense:

http://www.willamettecollegian.com/sports/sports.html

Thanks Bearcat fan for reposting my article! It turns out I actually missed a few names of contributing players this year, which I'd like to correct now. Freshman center Keenan Faatea got some time at guard rotating in for Wise and Couwenhaven. He's an up-and-comer, and should see some good playing time this year. Also was told by Speck (and the game's two-deep sheet) that junior Tommy Laird would be doing kickoffs, which wasn't the case. Also, senior TE Jack Gala and sophomore WR Ryan Johnston can hopefully provide some more depth this season.

I didn't really go back to check and see if anything was made about the controversial calls during the game, but IMO, the PI on UWSP's punt was absolute crap. There was no way any WU player touched him before he had completely dropped the ball, and even if they grazed him, they were pushed. As much as I hate to say it, the nullified conversion was legit: Knecht stepped out of bounds. A really unfortunate play, but he had a bad game all-around. He's such a talented athlete, and if we're going to have any chance against HSU, he and Widing need to be on the same page.

I'll try and be around the boards more often this season. Chatter out!

Some interesting news today out of the Temple Daily Telegram is that while not finalized it is looking like next years non conference games for UMHB will be against Wesley (in Dover) and Williamette (at home) and they are still looking for a third.

Also UMHB will provide free live streaming of all ten regular season football games, all home events and select road contests in each sport.

Other than spelling Willamette incorrectly, some interesting news.

They really should know how to spell the name ... IIRC, the Bearcats did a home and home against UMHB in 2004 and 2005.  My guess is that signing with another ASC team means we won't be playing nonconference games against the SCIAC anytime soon.

Was just taking a look at the Cal Lu roster in preparation for this weekend and noticed two things of interest (at least to me).

1.  Kevin Ramay, former Willamette QB has transferred to Cal Lu.
2.  Nick Bueno, a freshman from Monrovia, CA (where I live)--listed as a WR but was star QB the last couple of years and lead his team to the CIF Championship last season--might not see time this year but the kids is a gamer and could make an impact down the road.
