Was just taking a look at the Cal Lu roster in preparation for this weekend and noticed two things of interest (at least to me).

1.  Kevin Ramay, former Willamette QB has transferred to Cal Lu.
2.  Nick Bueno, a freshman from Monrovia, CA (where I live)--listed as a WR but was star QB the last couple of years and lead his team to the CIF Championship last season--might not see time this year but the kids is a gamer and could make an impact down the road.

I wondered where Ramay went. He never really got much PT during his time at WU. I got to know his parents hanging out in the Bearcat Club.

And what's Terrell Malley (So., TB) in 2010 doing now?

Looks like Willamette's next opponent, the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys, even with a new coach, look to be even tougher than before.

Tatsch, Byrd Steal The Show In Burleson's Debut Win Over Coe

Here's the first paragraph of the write-up on their website of the Coe game, in which the 'Boys were dominating on both offense and defense.

"ABILENE, Texas — It may have been the first game of the Jesse Burleson era, but it was two veterans that stole the show as Taylor Byrd threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns and Travis Tatsch set the school's record for receiving yards in a game with 13 catches for 265 yards and two touchdowns as No. 16 Hardin-Simmons rolled over No. 10 Coe College (Iowa), 41-14, in the season opener at Shelton Stadium."

Still attending Willamette, but only playing basketball this year.

The way they handled Coe could be scary for Willamette. I watched the Willamette/WSP on internet and wasn't real impressed with Willamette's offense...Defense looked good though so game could be a close one. In order for the fly to work well they have to be able to pass the ball effectively to mix it up. Didn't really see a real fly threat either.....but that may just be first game adjustments....

True -- the one thing in Willamette's favor is that HSU was playing a team that bused 17-odd hours to get there. This time they'll be on the road. (Most of it will be by air, though, of course.)

Drawing on my vast knowledge of small Texas cities like Abilene,  ;), and small Texas and Oregon cities and the airline industry,  ;) ;), there probably ain't no direct flights from Abilene to Salem, OR.  So the Cowboys will bus to the Abilene airport (7.9 miles--15 minutes), take a regional flight (hopefully delayed as they wait for passengers to fill up the airplane and make it cost effective, or hopefully they'll bus it--175 miles/3 hrs) to Dallas-Fort Worth (do they still fly DC-3s?), lay over in DFW for a couple hours (and hopefully have a few drinks to pass the time and impress the girls), miss their direct connection to Portland International (PDX) and have to go through SFO, arrive at PDX late at night in the middle of a rain storm, hail, etc., take a bus from PDX to Salem (50 miles, 1 hour) that breaks down somewhere on freeway and have to wait in a cow barn until help arrives, finally get to McCulloch Stadium just before the game starts and find the bag with their shoes was delayed in SFO, have trouble staying awake because of jet lag, missed lunch, etc., and start the game.
And maybe some of their best players will do a John Madden and bus it anyway.   :)

river

Oh, and maybe the bus driver will think they're going to McMinnville instead of Salem,  ;), and 'the Boyz willl be asking -- why those Southern California football guys milling around the stadium  . . . .  ;)
Naw, the bus driver wouldn't really believe that . . . . erase   ;)

baddog

HSU will bus to DFW where they will catch the flight to Oregon.
As for the bus driver losing his/her way to Salem, well, the bus driver will be from Oregon. And HSU's colors and uniforms look a whole lot like LSU's. So there could be some hard feelings and the driver may want to overshoot Salem and take them elsewhere.  ::)
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

MonroviaCat

Of course HSU's colors are also similar to Cal Lu's so they could end up in McMinnville...if so we'll let the two out of town teams duke it out and then we'll play the winner! :)
Go Cats!

They would definitely bus to DFW. The flights out of Abilene are not big enough to handle an entire football team's traveling party.

I'm about 99% sure that we flew straight into Abilene to play HSU in the 2000 Semifinals.

...have to go through SFO, arrive at PDX late at night in the middle of a rain storm, hail, etc., take a bus from PDX to Salem...

They'll definitely fly into PDX, as the Salem airport has no commercial service.

The weather forecast for this weekend is for the hottest weekend of the year. Temps in the high 90's and no rain, or hail, etc. But please, keep fostering the belief that it always rains here. That way, fewer people will want to move to Oregon   :D

Texas is in a major drought with record days in the 100's.  The weather is in their favor.

This is, without question, the most compelling human interest story to come out of the NWC so far this year.  Kudos to Kerry Eggers and the Portland Tribune for picking up on it.
