Apparently this is an NCAA rule, but I have never seen it enforced. Anyone care to comment?

It's a new rule this year and the only person I know that was penalized for it is LSU's punter.

As far as I'm concerned,no amount of celebrating by a punter is excessive.

I saw it in a Texas high school game by the "other" team. :-*

Touchdown celebration penalty costs Mass. team a state title
By Cameron Smith

When he raised his fist on his way to the end zone, Boston (Mass.) Cathedral High quarterback Matt Owens thought he was celebrating the score that would hand his school a surprising Super Bowl title. Instead, he was doing the one thing that could keep them from it: Earning a penalty on a play where there was nothing but green turf between himself and the end zone.

"The state uses NCAA rules and regulations for its football competitions, and The College Football Officiating guidelines state the following in regards to unsportsmanlike conduct on a play that results in a touchdown: If the ball is alive when the player makes a taunting gesture, then the penalty is enforced at the spot of the foul - and the key outcome: no touchdown."

I find the anti-celebration rules to be ridiculous.  The penalty on that high school kid was even worse.  He didn't taunt or even look at the opponent, he raised his hand in the air.

And Washed Up, I would consider ANY amount of celebrating by a punter excessive,  ;D

What harm does such "celebration" do? Will the feelings of players on the opposing team -- or their fans -- be hurt? Will they be "offended?" If you don't want to see such "celebration" then stop the other team from scoring!

This fist raising is not even "celebrating" in my book.  Ridiculous...

Get over it!

OTOH, I'm a proponent of "act like you've been there before" when scoring a TD, and I agree with the fining of Bills' Steve Johnson for mocking Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg as a gesture of celebration.

Mr. Ypsi

Agreed.  Except the 'fist raising' IS celebrating, which SHOULD be fine; it is 'taunting' which deserves a penalty.  The kid is just about to win the state title - what fully human kid (or adult, for that matter) wouldn't celebrate?! 8-)  (If he had held the ball out towards the defender pursuing him, THAT is taunting and deserves a penalty; penalizing him for what he did is beyond ridiculous.)

Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
