Quote from: FightBearcats on March 12, 2012, 07:51:42 PMThe headline was "Wildcats defeat Criminals."  Ah, those Wildcats.  They don't shirk from any challenge.  :)

Back in the day that headline would read "Wildcats defeat Southern Oregon Raiders".

There are quite a number of lists online.  Google "Unusual High School Mascots."

Here's one list and "Criminals" is on it.

They gave honorable mention to the Arkansas School for the Deaf Leopards.
I can't wait until the season starts.

One of my PNW favorites is (are?) the Tillamook Cheesemakers.  My high school plays against Redskins and Savages...(yes, still today).  Yikes on the PC scale?

I'm bicycling across the country and today reached Brawley, California on the way to Florida.  In the local newspaper there was an article about the recent track meet between Brawley and Yuma high schools which was won by Brawley High School.  The headline was "Wildcats defeat Criminals."  Ah, those Wildcats.  They don't shirk from any challenge.  :)

This got me to wondering about other "unusual" team names.  The Richland, Washington high school teams are "Bombers."  Any others?

Man, you've have a ton of courage to attempt this feat with the horrible drivers on the road today. Good luck.

As for unusual team names, the one for me which takes the cake belongs to a rugby team in Missoula, Montana. The Missoula Maggots.

Perhaps things will be changing at SOU since their head coach is Craig Howard former linebacker for the Wildcats, circa early 1970's.  Craig was also the high school coach for Tim Tebow.  I will be interviewing Craig on my radio  program here in the Springfield, MO area, this week.
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

D O.C.

That's (sort of) great.  I was wondering when Craig would finally come back west.  I figured he might have applied for the G. Fox job.

As long as you're enjoying strange high school names, you might want to take a look at some college ones from this site:

Coach Smith was nice enough to talk about the 2012 season with the ADvantage 'Catdome and he also breaks the news that Linfield will be filling that 2013 George Fox slot by playing in Cleavland, Ohio vs Case Western Reserve.

Before going to Cleveland, Linfield's coaches should have their players watch these promotional videos to ensure that the team really gets the full Cleveland experience. ;)

Thanks, Steel Curtain.  My ETA back in Salem is the end of May.  Hopefully, by that time, Willamette will have it's football schedule up.
