Hard to turn down $1 million (especially at 18?)!  And perhaps someone told him the story of Drew Hensen.

Drew was a high school AA in both baseball and football at Brighton HS in Michigan (I know he had state records for both HRs and TDs; don't recall if either were national records).  He turned down a very lucrative offer from the Yankees (I believe it was OVER $1M, but don't recall the numbers) to play qb at Michigan.  He was lucky to get a second chance, as the Yankees signed him just before the 3-year limit ran out for college players - at UM he played some downs, but he was beaten out by a dude named Tom Brady (you may have heard of him 8-))!  Since his leverage was about gone, don't know if he lost money, but pretty sure he never made the Show.

And not everyone gets a second chance at $1 M.  What if he had a career-ending injury at TCU?  Nonetheless, I support whatever choice a kid makes in a situation like this.

I agree Mr. Ypsi.
Another player was Mike Nixon. A 2002 graduate of Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix (my son played against him in high school)...SuperPrep Elite 50 (No. 7)...SuperPrep All-American (No. 2 skill athlete)...ranked No. 1 player in Arizona by SuperPrep...made 109 tackles (35 solo) and eight interceptions as a senior...completed 153-of-261 passes for 2,636 yards and 34 touchdowns...he also rushed for 309 yards, kicked six field goals and averaged 44.4 yards as a punter in 2001.

Mike was a great athlete and outstanding baseball player (catcher) who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school and played in their farm system until the end of 2005. He signed a national letter of intent with UCLA out of high school, but never enrolled. He reportedly received a huge bonus (One Million Dollars) from the Dodgers. In 2006 at Arizona State he played in all 13 games, starting four at strong side linebacker and totaled 32 tackles (20 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss (-24 yards), 3.0 sacks (-10 yards), three pass deflections and one forced fumble.

"Nixon signed with UCLA in February 2002 to play safety, not quarterback, and also baseball. But when the Los Angeles Dodgers came up with a $1 million signing bonus four months later, he gave up football to concentrate on becoming a catcher. Upon advice from his parents, that contract included a provision that the Dodgers would pay for his college tuition."

All said, things turned out alright for him. He got the money, played baseball (all in the minor leagues), played college ball, and received an education. Not too shabby.

Drew Henson made it to the show but he certainly didn't make it as a major leaguer.

Nine plate appearances, one hit. Batted .240 in Triple-A. The Yankees were able to trade him in an almost-deadline deal that got them Denny Neagle, then got him back the next spring, eventually gave him his cup of coffee and ... yeah. He was never a serious prospect at the higher levels.

He was never successful in the minors, is probably a better way to put it. As a "prospect", however, Henson was taken quite seriously. Baseball America ranked him at #9 in 2002.

Congratulations WC11 -- you're now a media celebrity on the Northwest Conference board.   :)

Thanks cawcdad! You too River (I think...).

Anyways...College of Idaho just rolled out the info they're joining the Frontier as a football-only member starting in 2014.  http://www.collegeofidaho.edu/blog/sports-news/2012/06/27/football

I still content that C of I will wind up back in the NWC eventually.  Might take a few years but I still think it's going to happen.

Been without a computer a long time. Just watched the Wesley highlights (I quit after the first two defensive series even though I know the Mag11ian would make it look respectable. What the heck were those skid marks in the end zone?

July and August will be slow months for DIII football.  The London Olympics will be the big news.  Here's a former DIII athlete who made some of that news.
"Nicholas Symmonds reacts after winning the men's 800m finals at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials."  Congrats to Willamette alumnus Nick Symmonds for winning a spot on the U.S. Olympics team with his win in the 800 meters.
