How do you keep them on their game if they don't play the game?
Clearly, they have to play to maintain fitness and skill set.

Linfield starters, for example, get more out of practice against their scout team than they do playing against L&C, GF, etc.

I guess you just hope PLU, Pacific, Willamette (most years) are on your schedule prior to playoffs if you are concerned with "rust?" Otherwise, I can guarantee you beating up on a team who misses tackles, assignments, is poorly coached, has no talent, etc. in no way, shape, or form "maintains fitness and skill set." A good coaching staff/team takes care of fitness in the offseason and skill set mid-week during the season...42 points in one quarter against the Pios is all you need as a starter, in my experience.

I agree with the "Scout Team" statement as it speaks to practice against a quality, well coached scout team and a lesser telented opponent on Saturday.
Yes...I would also hope for quality opponents at all times and especially in the later part of the season.  We likely have that with Bearcats and certainly have that with Boxers.
Somehow, at least to me, the game against Pacific is a playoff caliber contest. (or at least a primer for playoffs).
I'm also NOTa fan of "beating up on a team....."  I don't see how that would serve any purpose for anybody.  The possible exception is getting reps for the 2s and 3s.

"THE METTLE'S IN THE MEN!"

Congrats on owning that game, river.

That was a shocker! .... and wake up call to boot. Willamette played a great game, can't take anything away from their game plan and execution. They did what it took to win. 1st NCW loss for Linfield in how many years? Linfield will regroup and get better.

speedybigboy

I think that Linfields loss pretty much assures our conference of only one team in the playoffs.

Congrats River. Well earned. Cats got a major wake up call and got a dose of what they're going to see in two weeks. It's do or die. Go 'Cats!!!

I guess we can put the Ultra Elite talk on ice for a bit (despite how good you looked at Sparks in that second half).

Congrats to the Bearcats.

No spark at all on the cats part first half very poor play calling in the final minutes congrats to the kitties. If we keep playing like that we wont win our last game.

So two teams have to beat Pacific, Yeah? A tie goes to anyone but LINFIELD.

From the Wildcatville blog:

QuoteAmong Linfield football streaks ending today (1pm kick, Saturday 11/1/2014) with Linfield's 31-28 Northwest Conference football loss to Willamette on Linfield's Maxwell Field in McMinnville:

--41 straight regular-season victories (equaled Linfield record last week )

--35 straight NWC victories

--5 straight victories over Willamette

Pacific plays Willamette and Linfield to end out. Linfield  just needs to win out and they have the auto bid. In that case there is no tie.

technically there is a tie if both teams end up with one coference loss but I think the tie breaker in that case would be head to head result
Go Cats!

wildcat11

It's head to head so it's up to the 'Cats. Win or stay home.

onearmedscot

Linfield fans, sorry to see the loss.  No worries.  Now your just a one loss squad like Macalester and those Royals andJohnies.

Wildcat11 - if the Cats and Scots matchup in round one of the playoffs, i may need to use your couch.

The SCIAC is shocked......SCIAC winner goes to Texas ?
Less than two more years of Gavin.

MonroviaCat

Is anybody else shocked that Pacific had to win in overtime against Lewis and Clark?
Go Cats!
