Seoul: His major will be of no substantial assistance to him in his attempt to make the next level but may be to him thereafter.

Frank, what's your deal?  Seoul's question of Brett's major had nothing to do with how he might perform at the next level but you are trying to twist it that way.  Your tone in all your posts about Brett really gives off the impression that you are hoping/pulling for his failure.  It's pretty sad that d3 people wouldn't pull for a player from the division that might have a chance to catch on to a team.

Frank
I agree with Wildcat 11...your analyses did seem to take on a negative tone...We at the Catdome are human and we do have emmotions that hurt like everyone else...Right now...I for one am very sensitive about the Cat's loss...I personally don't like to see the loser get stomped on this board after a loss of anykind...but we all fail as human beings...if you want to point the finger...we all fail alike in the same way....What's important is that we communicate effectively and in the end we can all share our war stories and get a good laugh....to everything there is a time and a season... But I am like Wildcat 11...I am in no mood for veiled negative comments or analysis at the moment...so don't come across trying to correct us...You are no better than us.  A very wise man once said, "Weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice."

criswyly: Hold it! I only said something to the effect that Elliott's major would not be of any substantial assistance to him in his attempt to make an NFL roster. Prior to that on two or three occasions I pointed out what a publication of Pro Football Weekly had said about him as a possible pro prospect and implicitly that some of that publication's information conflicted with other information appearing on this board. I thought these posts by me might help a person who was trying to objectively assess Elliott's possible future in pro football.

Frank,

Can you tell me how any of the kids majors would help them in the NFL?  I know Matt Leinert's only class this year was Ballroom Dancing and that may help his agility but I'm pretty sure that was not his major.....
Go Cats!

Monrovia: In the abstract it is difficult, but for instance if a pro prospect were majoring in physical education, a course on "Football Theory" ,which was a part of that major, might assist him.

MonroviaCat

Frank, fair enough.  Though I suspect being the QB of a national championship team is probably more effective than a course in football theory (which I suspect is taught by Coach Locey to all the players...).  I also could argue that a player who majors in communications is at an advantage as they may be better able to present themselves to scouts, coaches, and fellow teammates in an effective manner---so, perhaps his major could help him at the next level (certainly when being interviewed by the press).
Go Cats!

bluenote, you know I have been thinking about that same thing the last week. I guess anyone who dislikes Linfield fans can feel better knowing we have had some gutwrenching defeats, and many of them happen to have been in the last few years. Here are my top 4:

1. Miracle in the Mud. I had finally started to get over this, saying to myself Central had won fair and square and that if our guys didn't play out the final play, then the Dutch deserved to win. And then I start hearing things from some of the players (who aren't known for bitching and moaning like us fans) saying one or more of the refs had blown their whistle and the play dead and that is why some of the guys stopped. Other questions and observations have come up which really leave a sick taste in my mouth if they are true. Some of these things we will probably never get the answers to. We had a great team that year, too.

2. '05 West Regional final against UWW. Not because of any one play or moment that is going to haunt me. Just that this was a team we all knew was capable of getting it done again. If UWW beats MUC, I will always be pissed at the NCAA for cheating the players, coaches, and fans out of the experience of the Stagg Bowl again (they had placed the WIAC school in the North before, why on earth they wouldn't do it this year is beyond comprehension), and watching these two great teams battle it out in front of a national TV audience. Even if the 'Cats were to lose, at least we could have said we went to back to back Stagg Bowls and showed everyone what this team was capable of on national TV.

3. '92 NAIA title loss to Findlay. Bluenote pretty much sums it up on this one. Gary McGarvey had less than 10 touches that game and at times I wondered if I was watching the same team I had all year. It was like we had forgotten we were playing in a national title game. We missed our opportunity to win a 4th NAIA title in that one and seemed to be okay with letting a bunch of ex-cons have it.

4. '02 West Regional final against SJU. I can live with the '03 loss because I thought the Johnnies were better. Yeah, maybe it would have been different if Ray Lyons was healthy, but I'm sure SJU had injuries, too. But the '02 game, we decided to fumble the ball 7 times, and had like 5 turnovers, some of them without a Johnnie anywhere near the ball. I thought the '02 team was better than the '03, and was our most balanced offense in a long time. We had a great passing attack, and one of the greatest 'Cat running backs of all time in David Russell. I believe that team would have done some damage after that game, maybe making it to the Stagg. We would have had Trinity at home in the semis.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Thanks Bluenote & Foss, I was ready to come out of the dark after last weeks game and you guys bring up those "great" games of the past. lol
Back to my room to view the DVD of the'04 Stagg Bowl!

Will the D3 senior bowl be on T.V. next weekend? Would be fun to see allen play one more game. And looks like Brett will be in 2 games himself....... It's been a fun ride!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

D O.C.

I just skimmed this last page and am in a hurry to get back to bluenote's observations.
I did see the 'MISHAP in the Mud' mentioned and I do not mind being the revisionist again. Miracle is from Central's point of view and in the mind of some journalist. A MAJOR mishap from the LINFIELD program POV. (oh...point of view)

Mount Union College is 13-1 and is in the Bowl again.
Perhaps we should cease referring to the quarterfinals as the championship game until next Sunday. If the Alliance coaching staff can squeak out another of their ever-so-convincing 10-7/30-27 victories then McMinnville will look like just another ....mishap.

Yes Frank you are not a cheerleader and I am.  That's fair.

However, you're making a far reach in trying to say you were tying to being analytical about Seoul's original post about wishing Elliott well and asking what his major is....when it really reeks of you being a 'hater'.

That may not be fair of me to say Frank but if one dislikes reading my opinion about your thoughts then one should probably avoid my posts.

Foss, could one of those things be that as pure as people like to say Division III is, it is still a child of the NCAA and there is that 3,240 attendance last year in Salem, VA, the lowest since 1986? Are the brackets based solely on travel savings or is that just one of the business factors?

Foss

DenS, I imagine there are many factors that go into the bracket selections, and some of them are things we probably don't want to know about. Going DIII was a great move for the NWC, in my opinion, and it beats the heck out of the NAIA's "if we fork out more money, can we have the home playoff game?" Playoffs, regardless of their flaws, are still great in my book. We get 32 teams, that is awesome. But yes, I do believe there are "business factors" that go into the DIII selections, and they really suck in my book and I hope someday they are addressed. They have to start placing some of the West teams in other regions, it's getting out of control. And I said this before we lost to UWW. They need to stop making high ranked Texas teams play each other in the first round every year when there are plenty of other schools they should be playing. And when the East doesn't win a game outside of its region for 6 straight years, they need to reevalute whether giving them 3 at large bids is such a good idea. Although some disagree with me, I don't think anything I've said is that outrageous.

SJU09

I think Linfield, St. John's or Concordia could have won any of the other three regions.

Pat Coleman

I don't think any of Frank's posts here have been particularly out of character. Frank has shown himself over the years to be a knowledgeable, if pessimistic analyst. And considering D-III players' chances of making the NFL, the pessimism is warranted.
