Another award for Brett Elliott. This one is the Melberger Award, which goes to "the top DIII player in the country", and is headed out of Pennsylvania. It used to be a big deal award for DIII, but has been a bit of a joke the last few years, being given to a local player, often one who is far from the best DIII player. Pat and others have rightfully criticized it, so maybe those in charge of the award are trying to turn a new leaf and get some credibility back by finally selecting the true top player in DIII this season, and not some no name in their own backyard. Thanks to CamCat for explaining to me how to change a link's name.

Melberger Award finally gets one right
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Foss,

It is great to see Elliott getting yet another award and bringing new honor to it, one that appparently needed a worthy recipient in order to help restore its value.

I just passed on the wisdom graciously given to me by cawcdad.  Maybe this posting stuff creates more teamwork than would appear to the uninitiated observer.

One time getting it right doesn't make up for three years of wandering in the wilderness. Gonna take a lot more than that before people take this award seriously.

Given the number of kids playing DIII football, more awards of recognition are indicated rather than fewer. As for the Melberger itself, it can gain status one year at a time, and if that is done right, shortly the award will have become prestigious.

Sounds to me like you all just slapped these palyers in the face.
Ask them and thier families if they consider themselves not to be a "... worthy recipient" or a bunch "...no names".

RedandPurple,

Read this story by Pat back in 2002 and I think you'll understand why many in the d3 community feel the way they do.

I thought that I'd take this topic over to the NWC board since this discussion the WIAC probably doesn't want to hear this anymore....

JT from rowanfootbll.com thinks that Rowan should be ranked higher than Linfield since Rowan play "tough" but lost to the 2005 Champs.

JT...you do a great service for Rowan but I don't know how you can honestly think that Rowan will be ranked higer than Linfield.  And to answer your statement about Linfield wouldn't have ring with Elliott....well first off Linfield has four National Titles and second I didn't see Elliott playing defense when Rowan put up the donut at the 'Catdome last year.

bluenote

Maybe our scout team could play Rowan next year for a practice game. From what I saw of Rowan last year, I wouldn't even want to waste my day watching those guys play, they reminded me of a weak 2A high school team. Plus those outfits they wear look terrible.

coco

Hey, come on, Bluenote! Watch out what you say about the 2A teams. Some of the local ones have more class than to want to step on the field with Rowan.

Any word on how Casey Allen did in the Aztec Bowl? Looks like the Aztec web site exceeded its bandwidth and is down for the time being.

Coco....I hear ya. If Rowan wants to come out here we'll set them up with the Grand Ronde or Sheridan JV squad (Amity would be way too strong for them).

Aztec Bowl Stats....

Stats looked kind of weird to me...18 passes the whole game. Looks like we had more of a rushing attack ...197 total offense? Good luck to Casey at the next level...not sure about Mexico for football?

I was screwing around with my computer tonight and I loaded up this video clip of the 1998 Linfield/Willamette game.

Linfield won the game 20-19 and with the victory clinched the record breaking 43 consecutive winning season by going 5-0 on the season up to that point.

This is probably the only time that a goal post has come down at the 'Catdome and I hope, for the saftey of the students, it's the only time the goal post come down.  However, enjoy the clip.
