WOUalum,

Don't be too quick to kick dirt on the L&C program. Some have suggested that the new President (in place since August of 2004) sees the value of varsity althetics to a rich campus life. I don't think this commissioned study is just lip-service. I think he really does want some advice on what it would take to get the program back up to snuff. I know that he'd have to change the attitude of several others in the administration/admissions, but it honestly wouldn't take that much to be decent there. They have the campus, location, facilities, money, etc. I agree that it is at risk of being cut, but I'm curious to hear what this commission comes up with and what the response within the administration is. Some recruiting and admissions changes could go a long way.

I'm also interested in this NWC conference call today. Will anyone who hears something please let the rest of us know?

Duffman, It's all about the bonus miles my man! Oh yah, and being willing to fly whenever the crappy airlines say they can stick you on a plane.

catback4, I don't know if this says anything, but we did have over 30 rushing attempts, with 3 guys splitting the carries almost equally. The 'Cats seem to be using a number of guys to help get the job done.

A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

4, to be honest there didn't look to be much space created to run.  I almost get the feeling that the hogs up front are just biding their time for the next passing play to go for 65 yards and a TD.  However WOU was bringing the house early in the game so it would have been tough sledding any way you look at it...The younger guys just need to realize that the better they can run the ball the easier time they'll have running and throwing down the road...

I wondered about admissions at L&C last spring when a student of mine was turned down by them but was admitted to UC Berkeley which is not a slouch school for academics. ???

To  the Cats credit, The WOU DL was big, not sure how the rest of the teams will stack up, but remember, It was the Cats first game and WOU's second. Give them time to work a few things out and I think they will be fine. "GO CATS" 50in05
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

A guy gets into UCB but NOT L & C? That's so absurd, it's funny. L & C thinks pretty high of themselves.

UCB is a school known around the world for academics, it has 100's of millions, maybe billions in research money. They hire Ph.d.'s mostly from the Ivy League.

The Pios really need to get over themselves. I'd rather pay out-of-state and go to UCB than pay L & C's tuition. UCB has a huge name, L & C does not.

Seems like L&C had pretty decent football teams in the mid-90's when Monica was attending the school on Palantine Hill.  In fact they gave the Cats a run for their money a couple of times in the mid-90s'.  Perhaps Monica and friends were encouraging the football team to play harder in those days!  ;D
LEAVE NO DOUBT

The Longies were legendary last week........that's the way to start off a Championship defense!!!  WOU's plan to keep everything in front of them and take out Elliott didn't work so it will be interesting to see what WISP has in store for us.

As far as Pacific......they would be wise to hire a local HS coach or current college assistant with local ties.  Isn't Ray Baker from Clackamas being pushed out after this year??

...anybody hear what was discussed in the conference call today with the ADs discussing the L&C situation? :-*

catback4....none of the backs look quite as shifty and fast as you were. But the best running O- line we had lately was in 2002. An old granny in tennis shoes could have gotten 3-4 yards a pop with them. From what I saw this years line will get better. They didn't do too bad on the run and actually protected Elliott better that I thought they were going to this early. I didn't see one back that stood out as being superior than the others though. They all looked about the same to me. I'd like to see them move Hazenberg to a running back. Now that would be very cool for running and receiving out of the backfield.... But that wouldn't be that smart of a move when your counting on him on defense, offense and returns.....what do you do!

The conference issued this statement, which doesn't really mean they didn't discuss other stuff as well -- this is what they released:

NWC to Support Lewis & Clark's Efforts to Rebuild Football

SPOKANE, Wash. — Northwest Conference members affirmed their commitment to assist and support Lewis & Clark College as it rebuilds a competitive football program after the school made the decision to cancel its NWC football games this season, according to NWC Commissioner Chuck Lindemenn after a Tuesday morning conference call of member athletic administrators.

"Conference members are concerned about the impact Lewis & Clark's decision will have on this season," said Lindemenn after a Tuesday morning conference call of NWC athletic administrators. "But the overriding concern is how they could help Lewis & Clark get its program back on a solid footing."

Lewis & Clark announced on Thursday, September 8th that is was shortening its football season to the first four games, all non-conference contests, to preserve the health of the team. The roster currently hovers around 30 players. The school has commissioned a committee to explore issues and suggest solutions to the problems facing the school's football program.

"Our conference has pledged whatever assistance we can provide," said Lindemenn. "And we believe that once L&C has implemented the suggestions of the committee, and with the potential renewal of Pacific University's football program in 2007, the NWC will be as healthy as it has ever been in football."

While some NWC schools are exploring options to fill the lost date on their schedule, others will play the schedule as is, according to Lindemenn. No schools have announced any specific plans at this point.

Thanks for posting the NWC response to L&C's decision.

What else can they say?  We probably should have had a contest  amongst the regular posters of this esteemed board as to the verbage of the announcement.

Willdcat 11, or Beancounter or even criswyly from Outer Mongolia (literally) could have come very close to this.

A President doesn't like to see weakness in her/his affiliations and the NWC is a proud and distinguished feature of higher education in the Northwest.

Menlo is even more valuable to the NWC now as a football affiliate.  I think that Menlo is quite comfortable as  the only football-playing  member in the NAIA-2 CalPac  http://www.naia.org/reg/reg2/calpac.html in all other sports.

I strongly believe that we will see Colorado College as the anticipated 11th member of the SCAC in the next 2 years.

The NWC must build from within and from its neighborhood.  Good luck! :)
