Anyone catch the poll question on the front page asking what matchup D3ers would most like to see? A couple of thousand voters and over 50% wanted to see Mt. Union vs. Linfield. I think that says a lot about how the 'Cats are viewed within the D3 community. Probably wouldn't have seen those type of results a few years ago, but given the 'Cats run the last four seasons, apparently people really want to see them go up against the Purple Raiders. They were all one game away from getting their wish the last two years.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Why don't you just create a D3football.com booster club...I think many of us could pop for 5-10 per month to help your travel costs?
I can't speak for Pat but I think the preseason preview has helped the finacnial situation alot.  I don't know how much money he raised from this but it had to be a help.    I think it ism also why it seemed that we got some more extensive coverage during the season and playoffs from d3football.com.  I bought the preview and never looked at it.  I just figured a worthwhile website was worth a small donation.  My guess is that I am not alone in this sentiment.

Joel,

Your observations are right on the mark. Indeed, the preview was successful, and indeed, that contributed to us being able to send more people more places this year. We appreciate your support and the support of others.

any plans to send someone to the Pacific Coast next year?

any plans for a Pacific Coast correspondent again?

I'm going to be the contrarian on this band issue.   If the band is going to be the same quality as it was in recent past, why bother??   I'd rather have the athletic department sell those seats and make money than to have a band like we have had (I'm trying to invoke the Thumper principle....if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all....unfortunately, that is a huge challenge when it comes to the Linfield pep band).

Coco's idea of inviting high school bands isn't a bad one.   In fact I see a bunch of upside to it, exposing a bunch of kids to the College and to Linfield football that normally not might have come to a game.  And even if you let those kids in for free....they are still buying hot dogs and drinks so you can make up the loss of ticket revenue.   We've had the MHS band at Linfield hoops games in the past, and they did a fabulous job to add to the atmosphere.

My two bits.

Thanks, LBC, but it wasn't me. Cawcdad came up with the idea. I think it's a great one, though, and between now and next fall, there should be plenty of time to implement it. High schools don't play on Satudays, and I think they might like the chance to showcase their bands at a college game. It would need to be worked out this spring, I'm guessing.

Beancounter, I think most will agree that we need those seats for the fans, But the band could sit in the south end zone. As I posted before I like the High School band Idea, but I still think we need a College band, The band before was a mix of past, present and who knows who? I just think if the College is putting up this nice new building that maybe we could get a few students to play on sat.? And yes, with alittle leadership would be nice!

Here's another vote for selling the seats in the covered grandstand and putting the "Honored High School Band of the Week" in the Cat endzone.  I think an 80-100 piece marching band will have a much better impact than the 15-20 piece pep band and actually will be much better heard by the reserved grandstand folks because the instruments could be aimed at the grandstand.  Great for the "dead" halftime, more parents following their kids and paying admission.  A win win situation for Linfield overall.  Sure would improve the total Game Day experience at the Catdome!

I'll bet the total Portland/Salem area high schools might even consider it an honor to get their kids performing at the Catdome.

I know this is a football board. I would like to remind everyone that there is a baseball board (for those who care).

Thanks for the credit coco, but the idea isn't original. :D I saw other colleges that didn't have bands bring in the high school bands.

As far as the pep band and seating goes, chairs could be put on the track towards one end of the main grandstand (when it's not raining) thus having a band and the seats for sale. The instruments would also then be pointed basically toward the crowd rather than the field. Our local junior college does it this way and they sound just fine with only 8 - 12 members. They have an all weather track like Linfield's.

coco

The last season we had a band was in 2004, and they sat in the south end of the covered section.

I don't care if we have a band from from the college, local high schools, or Patton Middle School. That canned music this year was horrible. Some of it sounded like old vinyls from the 60s, played on a record player from the same era, especially at the beginning of the season. It was embarrassing, and I think we can do better than that.

The one drawback I see to having them sit in the South 40 area is when it rains. I don't think it would be very hospitable to invite high school kids in and expect them to sit in the rain with their instruments and music. On the track like Cawcdad suggested might be workable.

I nominate Bluenote, as the Linfield head music poster, to approach Carney about this.

Definetly let the kids in free. More money for the Spurs who I think do a great job and lets not forget any of the parents who would come out to see their kid perform, they would be paid addmission.

Didn't you play in the pep band?
Bluenote- I know you did so how 'bout you contacting the Admin.

To silence something as unique as the Pep Band is unacceptable. I submit a vote for the irreverent, intelligent and witty Pep Band.
