Can't wait to attend a night game again.
WHAT??!!!  Willamette is NOT the last game of the season??? That is always such a CRUCIAL game and we've bumped it back to September 30th and replaced it with L&C??
Look at it this way. Linfield will get a week off to prepare for the playoffs :D

Swede,
Are you saying that L&C will be a cake walk?
The great blessing of mankind are within us and within our reach; but we shut our eyes, and like people in the dark, we fall foul upon the very thing we search for, without finding it

Mr. Ypsi

I've followed the 'bring back the band' movement with interest since I was in both marching band and pep band MANY years ago, but lately I've been following it with some amusement, wondering if anyone would ever make a correction.  I almost hate to mention it, since (as far as I noticed) the original error was by Abby Quick, who appears to be someone to applaud, but others keep repeating it.

You don't want to raise money for 'musical liars' - Michael Jackson clearly already has too much money!  The doohickey that attaches to an instrument to hold the music is a 'lyre'! ;)

You may now resume the previously scheduled discussion - and BRING BACK THE BAND! ;D

Liars/Lyres/Lutes...what's the diff! ;D  All I know is that Abby is to be commended for comming on the board to post and and be a part of the forum. I'd also like to correct Beancounter when he said there are "40 seats LOST to the band". This is not accurate, they are not LOST SEATS, they are Band People Seats...seats used by an entity that promotes the school spirit and pumps up the team/crowd.....Please do not spread mis-information,  someone may bring their trombone to the game and empty their spit-valve on the pizza going up to the press box!   :P

Pat....I hope L & C doesn't poop out this year either but if they do field a team they are no worse than many other teams around the country like Hamline, Dubuque or Heidelberg, etc..... ;D

I've been watching the band discussion with some amusement.

Like any student-run organization, a pep band is likely to have ebbs and flows from year to year, as committed students graduate and are replaced. Someone earlier mentioned some undefined acronym as a possible funding source for the pep band and if that is your undergraduate student government then yes, that's a good place to start. When I was in college that's how the band was funded. Didn't take a lot of money to get t-shirts, buy sheet music for a couple new songs a year, maybe travel to one big game. And it doesn't have to be music majors -- I bet there are people on campus who played in their high school band but didn't want to spend their lives in the music school would still be interested in coming out a few hours a week to play.

The key, as always, is leadership. You need a bandleader and a faculty advisor for a student club like that.

Just my $.02.

And that is just what I was talking about.  Our pep band has gotten better and better!  Everybody enjoys them when they are at the games.  They bring a lot of spirit to our side of the field.  Why, they even let ME chaperone them once all the way to Randolph Macon.  It was probably the fringe benefits (brownies) they got that day and the fact that the history prof band director's daughter was running track that day, but oh well . . I can dream, can't I?

BRING BACK THE PEP BAND!
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!

Still lost revenue either way Bluenote.     Would I rather have the $2400 in the athletic department budget or have a band of "slappys" doing another rendition of Louie Louie, as Downtown described them?

But you might be onto something with this school spirit thing.  We thought along the same lines in junior high.   We had a spirit club that would get everyone to wear the school colors on game days.   You just did your best to look and feel....so....so....swell!!!   Golly!!

How about pep assemblies??   Maybe Linfield can have those at 1pm in the afternoon on Fridays to get the students all worked up.

Bluenote....the possibilities seem endless.......

But why only 9, possibly 8 games.  Are there no other teams out there or is everybody just afraid to play you guys?  Now that I can understand, but it only leaves 9 times to have tailgates and fun times before the playoffs.  You are getting cheated out of a tailgate oportunity!!! And I keep hearing about them--they sound like a whole lot of fun.  Keep this thought for the next discussion AFTER we get the PEP band a bit futher along.  I may be on the other side of the country, but I'm in on contributing to the Pep band.  Just give me a  name and an address.  I teach so It'll probably be symbolic, but I like to put my money where my mouth is.

Beancounter...we all know you're against the band and all the school spirit stuff and feel that money is your only priority in life but do you have to be so callous and demeaning to the student musicians?

Bring back the Bonfire!

The very last one I was still next to the side of the pile away from the stands when some idiot lit the thing.

Wildcat'64

Onlinemom,

You're a sweetheart for offering to help BRING BACK THE BAND.....rather than sending your hard earned dollars, could you just box up some brownies, put them in the mail and send them to the band.  Remember how great it was when you were in college and a box of cookies arrived from Mom?  We'll probably get more band members if we could tell them Mom was sending some brownies......

BRING BACK A (GOOD BAND)p.s.  I'm with you...it's a real bummer if we only end up with eight games this season again losing one Tailgateing opportunity...thank goodness we had three playoff games this season to make up for the few home games.
LEAVE NO DOUBT

Bluenote-Well said, they are pep band seats

Beancounter
Okay, say I agree with you (which I don't). You did your math correctly assuming the pepband would take up forty seats their would be a loss of $2400.00.
Now lets assume those Forty people buy general add. seats. Do the math and you come up with $1600.00. So the loss in revanue would be 800.00 and not $2400.00 as you maintain. This is providing General tickets are $8.00 each.

Is the Las Vegas Classic on telavision?

Olinemom -- I like you. You're a nice addition to the NWC board. My specialty is chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies, but they certainly are not as good as your gazillion types of brownies. I like your band support, too.

Beancounter -- You are being pretty negative about this whole deal. Why are you such a Mr. Crabbypants about a pep band? That's not like you. You're normally so supportive of Linfield.

Tuxguy, here's a bit of news for you to tell Mrs.Tuxguy. Several of the rest of you may enjoy it as well.  Nurse Goodbody's boyfriend  (Minnesota Wildcat -- you guys remember him) gave her gorgeous diamond earrings for Christmas. They're huge! Giant! He gets my vote for Boyfriend of the Year. He already had it before the earrings, though.

I vote to bring back the band, too.

Unless all you guys are going to play on game days, your girl Abby said it herself, attendance is horrible.  This is a waste of time if all that show are 15 people.  If there is no interest from the students, it's going to be terrible. It needs to be bigger and they need to take it serious and practice.  Nobody wants to hear people play that just show up and go through the motions.  By the way, one of my fellow RB's from hawaii back in the day taught me how to play the spoons if that helps :D Maybe Bruce Assily will come back and sing his 7-11 song at half time...

'Cats Fa Natic

This whole band thing and discussion about participation, etc... what if there was a way to make playing at a game part of a class.  You know, like a lab or make it its own class.  Football Pep Band 201 or something like that.

That way, you would at least cut down (somewhat) on kids skipping out, especially if attendance at 75% of the games was mandatory for a passing grade.

Just a pre-morning-coffee thought.
{Clever sign-off goes here.}

OK, I'm off to watch the last LINFIELD WILDCAT still standing.
Actually... off to see one of the last Division III ballers still standing too.
