That's what he is. He's a Utah transfer who is in the game from Division III Linfield.

I haven't figured out how to do more than one quote in a post, so quote being responded to: Are you sure you want to trust a write up that says BE [Brett Elliott] transferred FROM Linfield to Utah?.

Which was in response to: ...Brett Elliott, a Utah transfer from division III Linfield.

Pat,

I now can see that the sentence CAN be interpreted that way, but I ran it past 5 people who know nothing of d3 fb (including two English profs!), and they unanymously thought that Elliott had gone from Linfield to Utah.  It is the conjunction of 'transfer from' where the place being LEFT is routinely AFTER the phrase, which is the problem (I think).  A very poorly constructed sentence.

(And, yes, as a prof who frequently has to 'wing it' in front of an audience, I have empathy for announcers doing it in front of millions whom they don't even have the benefit of knowing [or the power of grading over them!] - it is still a VERY unclear sentence, likely to be misunderstood.)

I, for one, hope that his O-Line at the Hula Bowl will block a whole lot better than they did in Las Vegas!!!  It seems like the East stomped all over the West out there.  I get Comcast but there was an obvious conflist.  My Skins were getting skinned by Seattle at the same time and I was at my brother's house.  It was his TV and so it stayed on the Skins-Seahawks game.  :( This whole weekend was almost a bust-- 1for 4 in the pros.  And it would be the one game I figured my team would really lose.  They won.  Oh well, now I can pick some other teams for next week.  But I am going to watch the Hula Bowl the whole time.  I want to see Brett play and I want to see my athletic trainers in action and the coach of the Year who sent me a hoodie because he is a genuinely nice person (could it have something to do with the 17 pans of brownies I made for the Stagg Bowl?  Most probably!)  So you'all need to come again
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!

Leave the accountant be. He's holding his own in the logic department.
Let me be the larger Scrooge and ask if it has dawned in the conversation that there are many paying customers who loathe sitting anywhere near a band?
How about the covered porch area between Ted  'son of a buck' Wilson gymnasium and the pool? All to be played over a new sound system purchased with just a pinch of the  Evergreen, of course.

Abby...are you any relation to Jack B. Quick?
Now that you are properly introduced my banter I wish you the smoothest progress to your goal. But I AM partially deaf from a combination of standing next to Neil Young' speakers too long and surfers ear so proximity to a band is maddening. Not good vibrations.

Arrived at the Sam Boyd Stadium 8 miles from the airport with about 13 minutes left in the 2 quarter,# 5 at the helm of the West "offense".
The East has just gone up 13-3.
The wind had not quite picked up and the white team was headed south. Literally.
First pass thrown into the ground. Then the slide–show fumble at the West 18-yard line. It was that kind of pressure all day.
Got worse.
A pass intercepted and run back for a touchdown.
The only pump and go pass of any distance was also intercepted.

I was walking around checking out the UNLV stadium on the East side when I spotted Casey Allen doing the same thing. He got to spend since Wednesday around all the happenings. It seems the Aztec Bowl was kind of a lonely affair. Got to meet Grandpa and Grandma Allen and chat as the 4th quarter dragged on. By then the cold wind was ricocheting all around the stadium.
# 5 headed straight for the locker room after the game. We made no attempt to play Division III hang around the goal posts and have a family chat.
It's a whole new ball game.
Had the pleasure of meeting  #3's sister too.

I was hoping that I can get some infor from the Linfield faithful about whether it is possible to buy a copy of the Linfield/Whitewater game.  There were replays on the scoreboard during the game so it does appear that a tape of some kind was being made.  WW has a local cable broadcast that the communication students do that goes out to the campus and town and I know there are other schools that do similar broadcast so I was just checking.  It may be just the programs game tape but I still would like to buy a copy.  I e-mailed the sports info director but got no answer and don't want to bug the head coach unless necessary so thought I would ask all of you as my next step.  Thanks for the help.

Olinemom, check your e-mail!  Sent you a note.

Maybe I missed this already but why is Brett Elliot on the "East" Team for the Hula Bowl?  Seems kind of strange to me....

Downtown....you've made a great point.    For every person who thinks it is a big deal, there are those who don't care and don't care enough to say anything....like a lot of issues.

A band is not crucial to a college football game.  Linfield proved it last year.   The Linfield at St. John's playoff game proved it in 2003 (despite the loss, a great game and a great atmosphere).  Hammering the athletic director with e-mails will be only therapeutic to the writer in getting something off of their chest.   I'd only be in favor of a band if it didn't cost the athletic department *any* financial resources.

I've read some good ideas here on this list.  A canopy on the north side...great idea..but who is going to pay for it?   T-shirts and halftime pizza...great idea....but who is going to pay for it?    New sheet music to replace Gary Glitter and Louie Louie...great idea...but who is going to pay for it?   Writing e-mails won't get these things to fall out of the sky.

This isn't being Scrooge...these are real questions that have to be answered for a go on this thing.   But finding answers to financial problems is my nine to five job.   Why that is offensive is beyond me.

LBC...enjoy your "I Have a Dream" holiday today.

Holiday??   Look at the calendar.

I work on MLK day and Presidents' Day for obvious reasons.  Veterans Day and Columbus Day are work days in this business as well.....but we take the day after Thanksgiving off, as well as Christmas Eve...and we try to get our year end business done so we can have New Years Eve off as well.   Super Bowl Sunday will be my last day off until April 15th...though Sundays are days we keep pretty light to do our best to have a day of rest.

Glad you made it to Vegas to support Brett, Dens.  Thumbs up for the time and expense your incurred!

Tuxguy

DT 48...... Not sure where you picked up that I was against Carney? ( I have a student Athlete at Linfield, I don't think that would be a very good Idea!) I think he has done a great job!
I could draw this out & put you all to sleep, so I will just say I've never said the athletic Dept needs to pay, give back the seats or anything else.
I would like to have a Linfield pep Band back, pure and simple. I haven't asked anyone to put $ where their mouth is. I have agreed to meet with pdawg, abby, bluenote and any one else who would like to see this happen. As LBC has said, E-mails wont get it done, so, the meeting to get a plan. If we can make this work, GREAT! If not, no big deal as some have said. ;D
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

I applaud your last post. I think you and Downtown summed it up pretty well.
1. Most people care less one way or the other about a pep band.
2. Simply e-mailing the AD among others won't get the band Back.
3. No money should have to come from the AD.
4. Money for everything from pizza's to t-shirts to sheet music bundles will have to come from somebody other than the AD.
5. I agree pep bands are not crucial to football.
So I don't sound as if I am waffling on the idea let me point out

Although the majority may careless about a pep band either way there is those of us who feel it provides the atmosphere of football just like the cheerleaders do. I can't speak for the others who would like to bring back (a good )band but I, like you, don't want the dollars comming from the AD. As far as the $$ to provide t-shirts etc. a number of us have memtioned in prior posts that'd we like to help. Like you, e-mailing in itself won't do the trick, although it has opened channels of communication we have got to the point it is beyond that stage. Pdawg has offered to facilitate a meeting, so now its time to put all the many ideas to work. or listen to the canned
music again this fall.
As for my assuming, I just wanted to point out that although $2400.00 would be lost from game day revanue (assumng 40 seats are taken) there are too many variables in figuring out the exact hit. Will 40 people buy GA tickets? Will it rain at all the home games? Will total attendance be down? I agree no matter how you figure, the bottom line it will be a loss at the gate.
Abby expressed to us her concern about the band sitting in the grandstand but also has said they won't take those seats
and has offered up suggestions.

Mount Union does not have a pep band but they do have an awfully good marching band that performs at halftime and in parades.

Pat Coleman

Mount Union has had a pep band at every game of theirs I have been to.
