News Alert:
"Several States are already making efforts to prevent the murderous institution of football. Modern football is too brutal for civilized Ore-gon." - Salem Sentinel newspaper, December 11, 1897

I hear Lewis & Clark still agrees with that one... ;D

What a great quote. And probably very true before they started wearing helmets.

News to me:
I didn't know the duck mascot at U. of Oregon was the famous Disney character.
Check it out here: http://www.college-football--tickets.net/oregon/history.htm

Thanks for that.  I knew he was a Donald Duck but had forgotten Disney himself gave them permission to use it.

You must have a lot of time on your hands this weekend to be digging up all these quotes... ;)

FYI: Checkout this link concerning the Wonderlic Test given at the NFL Combine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderlic_Test

What I find interesting in that article is that the offensive linemen and centers score higher on average than the QBs.

So much for the perception of "smart" QBs and "dumb" lineman. :P

BTW, you can take a sample (partial) Wonderlic test offered via ESPN.

'Cats Fa Natic;
Thanks for the Romeo and Juliet correction. Guess I need to brush up on my literature.
The smartest players on the field are on the o-line (IMHO).

Interesting CBS sportsline article on Brett.  I came across it when I looked at the comments to his blog page (to which there aren't any updates.)

Maybe people have already seen it (it was written back in Feb.), but just thought I'd post it in case you haven't.

Linfield's Top Ten Over the Past Ten

Below are the top ten moments captured of Wildcat football over the past ten years (1996-2005).  These moments are a collection of game/season changing plays, a whole game itself, or just a game event that either had a huge impact (positive/negative) on a season or the Wildcat overall program.  A panel of 20 former Linfield players, staff members and fans voted on these great Linfield moments.

Click here for the honorable mentions: Top Ten Honorable Mentions

This week moments 6-4 are revealed

In the 2000 second round NCAA DIII playoff match-up, (9-0) Linfield paired off with a Central Dutch (11-0) team at a muddy Maxwell Field.  The game was marred with a slippery surface and numerous turnovers by each team.

The game moved into Overtime where Linfield booted a field goal by Scott Cannon to take a 17-14 lead.  With Central not gaining a first down in their OT possession ,the Dutch lined up for a game tying field goal attempt.  Then, the most heartbreaking, bizarre play occurred that ended the season of a Wildcat team that many thought was a National Title contender with a 20-17 controversial defeat.

In an epic battle with NAIA #2 Southern Oregon, Linfield rallied from four different deficits to push the Raiders into two overtime periods.  In those overtime periods, The 'Cats flexed their collective muscle by using the combination of a bruising offensive line and the running of Marty Williams and David Russell to carry the ball nine straight  times in scoring the game tying and then game winning TD (42-35).  Thus cementing the 2002 motto of "Leave No Doubt"  and launching the season of what many consider one of the Wildcat's greatest teams.

When the 2001 season started off at 1-2 and whispers about a possible end of the "streak", things didn't look good for the 'Cats as they were behind at #9 Menlo 27-9 in the 3rd quarter.  Coach Locey inserted Sophomore QB Tyler Matthews into the game of hopes of capturing some momentum.  Matthews threw two quick TD passes and brought the 'Cats within reach at 22-27 early in the 4th quarter..

However, it looked like Menlo would ice the game on a mid 4th quarter TD run, but Linfield DB Ike Ellis would strip the ball at the one yard line.  Five plays later Matthews found TE Marcus Ward for a 74 yard game winning strike and Linfield hasn't lost in the regular season since (42 straight regular season games and 50-3 overall)

Ah man, I was there for that game. That was PAINful.  One moment we were hugging, thinking we'd won, and then...

Erg.

NFL Prospect Profile:
... Shows very good accuracy in the short-to-intermediate areas, but does not have a cannon for an arm to be a "homerun threat" on his deep throws ... Does a good job of squaring his shoulders and delivering the ball on target consistently, but operates mostly out of the shotgun ... When lining up under center, he has the foot speed to get back, but shows some difficulty setting his feet (will slide out from under him at times) and is prone to throwing off his back foot, more so than when he takes the shotgun snap...Shows good accuracy when on the run, but does lose some velocity behind his deep tosses when rolling out ...

Our man Brett Elliott?

No, Alex Smith...#1 draft pick in 2005

Very interesting.  Almost had me going except I've seen a lot of the homeruns he threw, like they were on a string.  I didn't realize Alex Smith had so many "knocks" against him going into the draft...

Exactly what I thought also. That was just a partial list of what was said about Smith, I didn't want to take up a lot of space on the post, but I've read some of the same things about Elliott. Just shows you never know what will happen at draft time.

Yeah, but somehow, I just don't see Elliot going #1 this year...  ;)

So what's your bet? Think he'll be drafted?

That Menlo game really stands out to me. I was sure that the 'cats were sunk- losing to a great team badly, ready to fall to 1-3. Thank goodness that Locey was so fed up that he put in Mathews. Mathews made very few mistakes over the next 2.5 years.
Saturday will be the most epic tailgate ever, especially if my wife gives birth under the Quick-Shade.

Yeah, he was a smart QB.  Didn't have some of the physical tools that Elliot has but you're right--very few mistakes.

It's really too bad he never made it to the Stagg Bowl. It would've been nice to see him get there.

Is former Beav Derek Anderson on an NFL roster? Curious as to his speed in the 40.
