Come on now Wildcat '64....be serious.    Now I guess we should consider Benzel to be one of the alltime greats based upon 55 pass attempts.   To be fair, where does Benzel stack up in total passing yardage?

Which serves as nothing but a reminder to talk to the SID about the standards in the record books.   Tim is not the only career backup in the Linfield record book.    It belittles the guys who were threw 250 or more passes to be compared with guys who played in garbage time only.   The minimum number of pass attempts in the percentage of completion is just 20.   In Brett Elliotts' last game at Linfield, he threw the ball 67 times.  Some of that stuff needs some work.

Swede...the new Linfield chaplain is Tyler Matthews.

Rockcat......no matter who the QB is at Linfield, he'll still have the best set of receivers in the conference to throw to in Kaluza, Thomas and Vierra.   Lets' do the math......to make any AA team at the d3 level, you have to be in the top five or six (for example, Ty Matthews did not make any d3football.com AA teams, but was on an NCAA AA team, while Brett Elliott was consensus AA.   More than 220 schools play d3 football....so you have to be in the top 3% just to have a chance to get named even honorable mention.

There's no NCAA AA team. The NCAA does not name All-Americans in any sport in any division.

Anyone know where a person can pick up a BE Rookie card besides ebay?

Saw the Whitworth season preview was posted on the Pirate site.  I still feel pretty good about the team.  Obvious area where someone needs to step up is at WR.

I still think that Clark will challenge Collins for west coast QB honors.

Any word from PLU?  It seems they will have quite a bit coming back, but is confidence shaken in Parkland?

It seems like it's more than shaken...it seems shot by a drive by. (pitiful atttempt to make fun of Parkland)

I don't follow.  You're right, you have to be good to be an All-American!?  Both Matthews and Elliott were very good and earned their recognition....uhhh.....

Occidental is probably a .500 team without him.

I know this comment came in the midst of you defending Collins as a great QB, but I hardly think Oxy is only a .500 team without him.  When Tyler Pao Pao ended the '03 season early due to injury - the Tiger season was ressurected by a promising Frosh QB Justin Elway.  He was 4-1 as a starter for the Tigers, his only loss being a close one against Redlands who took the SCIAC crown that year.

Oct. 11 Redlands                           L 18-14
Nov. 1 at Colorado College              W 49-7
Nov. 8 Cal Lutheran                       W 34-24
Nov. 15 La Verne                           W 35-7
Nov. 22 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps  W 33-10

Unfortunately (for Elway), Collins transfered in and took his starting position (which obviously has worked out well for the Tigers).

Nevertheless, I believe the Tigers would still be looking at two conference championships with Elway and would be looking for their third this year.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Oswald,

Maybe Oxy is 7-3 considering there are games against Lewis and Clark and Colorado College every year.  We'll see where the team is a year from now.  I was at the Linfield vs. Oxy game two years ago and wasn't impressed with most of what I saw.  There wasn't a lot of team speed and a lot of positioins were undersized.  A friend who is closely tied with Linfield football told me that he thought Oxy was 6-4 or 5-5 without Collins after the game last fall.  I think most NWC fans see the SCIAC as a conference where one person can make a team (which shows what most think of the SCIAC).

Regardless, my point is that he is a difference maker.  There is no way they win those playoff games a few years ago with any other QB, even if his name is Elway.  And for Elway's record....Oxy should win those games.  Convincing wins against Claremont, Colorado College and LaVerne don't convince me of much.

You've got a good point that the recent playoff success for the Tigers would not have been possible without Collins, as well as, making a difference on a more national level is where the Tigers (and the rest of the SCIAC) should be focusing their attentions.
Go TIGERS!!!

"...At this point I think Collins is clearly the best QB in DIII."

I've got to say I can still remember the awesome display of talent he put on last year against the Cats.  The guy's incredible.

Well my fellow geezer friends how would you like to keep up your enthusiasm for DIII football, and the Wildcats in particular, for many years into the future? Here are a couple of great resources for you.

I went out and bought a bottle of Pinot Noir as I wasn't drinking enough (I'd never make it on the MIAC board) and I definitely need to kick up my sex life.  Finding a good girlfriend is probably a good first step.  :o

Here's to 121 consecutive years of Linfield winning seasons.  :)

Pat--

I found the listing for Tyler Matthews as an AA in the NCAA record book for d2 and d3.  Since it was listed in an NCAA publication and I saw that Matthews was not listed in the d3football.com all americans, I figured that the NCAA has listed some sort of all american team.

FWIW, the NCAA record book is online in a pdf file at

http://www.ncaa.org/library/records/football/football_records_book_d2_d3/2005_d2_d3_football_records.pdf

I assumed that the NCAA would not want to corrupt one of its holy books with a listing for all americans from a source other than themselves.... ;D

But back to points made earlier....to get to an all american team, you have to be in the top 3% of all players at that position.  Considering Joel Clarks' numbers up at Whitworth the last two years, it would be a great accomplishment to for either of the Linfield quarterbacks to be first team all conference, let alone any national honors

They do, though. They even list our All-Ams. :)
