I've heard good things from the Pirates fall camp so far.  Michael Allan is bigger and stronger then ever.  He was already the toughest match up for any NWC team to deal with this season without adding strength.

Interesting difference in philosophy - The Wildcats have to cut a lot of "really good" players.  The Pirates have just over 80 in camp, which is around where they've been the last four years.  For Whitworth, based on coaching staff size, that seems like a better number to work with.  More reps in practice and more attention from the coaches for each player.

Rock, during my time I know we always trimmed down to 125 players, but I am not sure if that is an NCAA thing, NWC thing, or just a Linfield thing.

Pine,
Personally I couldn't disagree more with your talk about numbers in camp.  The players at Linfield still get all their reps, and very quickly the team is split into Varsity/JV.  The JV players then provide possibly the best scout team in the country at this level while also developing within the system.  The young guys really don't take anything away from the veterans, in fact they provide extra challenge and help them get better.
The more pieces of coal we have in camp this year, the more diamonds that will emerge in the future.
There's nothing like being a wildcat.  Some say they understand, but until you've lived it, you have no idea.

+karma for you , or Holy Water as camcat puts it! ;D
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

Orca,

Actually I didn't say one system was better than the other.  I said FOR WHITWORTH, the smaller squad size works better.  The Pirates have only four full time coaches, plus one part time and three or four GAs.  We don't have a JV team (no one around here to play JV games against).  Therefore, 80 guys works well.

Other schools have larger coaching staffs, bigger bugets and JV opportunities.  Obviously a larger team is more appropriate at those places.

Just curious, how many of the 40 or so guys cut will stay at Linfield?

It is a better system for Whitworth because they don't have 125. ;)  I'm sure if they could get that many in camp they wouldn't be at all upset.

My experience working with college athletes is that those who are at the bottom of the list figure that out on their own.  Some quit before cuts are made because they know they aren't good enough.  Some guys always leave school before class starts but what I've seen is that those are the guys who think they are big time.  They leave because their ego has been stomped by not being a regular on the varsity squad.  Besides, those who leave school because of something like this shouldn't be at Linfield anyway.

My experience is not with Linfield football but with a variety of other teams/programs.

I am sure the guys cut by the 'cats can leave Mac, trudge up to Spokane, and start for the rats.
Saturday will be the most epic tailgate ever, especially if my wife gives birth under the Quick-Shade.

Lets also consider the J.V. team taking on the Alums, makes those young ones grow up real fast in Catland.

The 'cats will wear all purple again for a home game but which one? Yes, I had a good summer vacation with my daughter, son in law and grand children up at Silverwood Park. The school is about ready for the kids to come back. Will you be comming back as well?

No...the boys will be nice and loose and they'll be hydrating all week.  It was 90+ I believe in Mac for doubles so they'll be fine...
