Broadcasters reflect on careers

Good story on Linfield's Radio broadcasting team of Darrell Aune and Dave Hansen.  Dave Hansen, also the long time Dean of Students at Linfield, is in his 30th year of calling Wildcat action.  Joining Dean Hansen in his 6th year is Oregon boardcasting legend, Darrell Aune.  Darrell spent 20 years as the voice of Oregon State football and baseball.

Excerpts:

--- Hansen said, "If I bring anything of value to the broadcast, it's certainly not an ability to analyze a football situation, it's knowing the kids outside the football realm. In the classroom, in the hallways and that kind of thing. I have the opportunity of interacting with them through the week. So every once in a while you come across a cute story or something a little bit more interesting about a player than what they do on the football field."

---"It's the people by far," (Darrell Aune said about what he's enjoyed at Linfield). "The people here are great. The coaches are great, the student athletes are a breath of fresh air. Some Division I athletes kind of expect things to be given to them, to be handed to them. They're all on scholarships and too many think they're going on to play professional ball. And sometimes they're not the nicest people. And you don't find that to be the case here. These kids are not on scholarships. You have a different mind-set. They're students first, athletes second. They're really great people to be around. That's the thing that I like the best, I like the people."

GHC-

I'm an Oregonian now, so I really don't have any 'inside' info on the Lutes. (Not that I would share much anyway...but) I haven't been to a practice or seen them play since early last season. Nor have I been in touch with anyone who has seen them. I know that they are young, young, young. New starters all over the place and many are sophs. with some jrs. Based on the stats, I think a couple receivers are a threat (Chiado and Reed). It's no secret that the defense is running a new scheme and has given up a lot of points. That's about all I've got. Is that enough for a Longie?

Pirat

Foss, how about Thor or Lars or Olaf or Daniel.  Ya it is a German or Austrian word.  It is a Freudian thing.

Gig Harbor Cat

The longies will be flowing D-train.  You might want a couple to dull the pain of it all.

See you there

Seems that evn though the administration is taking the easy way out, L&C has some player's who are giving it their best shot -
offensive player of the week, special teams player of the week, and honorable mention defensive player of the week - and all underclassmen -

congrats!

I think It's great to see the L&C players doing so well! ........ Question: I know that PLU, UPS and maybe some of the other Schools have replaced the L&C game, thanks to SOU & WOU which we already play. If the Pios don't get anyone hurt in the next week or so, Could,Would they maybe think about playing the Cats or Bearcats? or is it dead? I think I know the answer.  :(
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

Foss,

While I agree that the match-up in LaGrande this weekend should be very close and will reveal quite a bit about the Pirates...I don't agree that with the urgency that you place on it. Whitworth has 7 regional D-3 games on its schedule and probably needs to win 6. This game shouldn't do much to help or hurt their playoff chances. Willamette's loss to EOU didn't seem to matter at all last year, nor did three non-conference losses in 1999.  Linfield fans are always quick to point out the 'great snub' of 2001, which was largely due to a goose-egg laid in Ashland. But there were special circumstances that year (a three-way tie with only one or two berths to award) that forced the committee to review 'other' factors. Without similar circumstances in place, the selection committee will not look beyond the primary criteria (i.e., regional D-3 record and Str. of Sche.). If Whitworth wins 6 of 7 D-3 games, they'll be in. If they win 5 of 7, their chances are marginal. But either way, I don't think the results of this game really determine that much for them. Perhaps others have a different read on this?

I'll be interested to hear the results out of Baker Stadium in Tacoma as well. It looks like the Bearcats are beginning to find their stride, but UPS has a lot to prove. The Lutes and Loggers hook up next week in what is suddenly a rivalry again.

Tux,

Don't count on it.

I went to the Oxy-Cal Lutheran game last weekend with a formal Bethel U player.  After seeing CLU play we couldn't imagine how bad PLU must be this year.  CLU looked absolutely horrible.  They only had one solid offensive possession the entire game.   In fact, they would have only scored once if their kicker didn't make a 52 yard field goal just before the half.

If Cal Luth scored 42 against PLU I can't imagine what the Cats are going to do this weekend.  We honestly might see the widest margin of victory in the history of the series.  Cats in a route, win by 40.

The CLU offense had its worst outing in a long time on Saturday, so I wouldn't use the Oxy game as a comparison.  The 42 points CLU scored on PLU were in line with the average points the Kingsmen scored in their final 6 games of last season.

That said, many of CLU's scores against PLU came because they just flat out beat people in the PLU secondary - that has to be keeping the PLU staff up late this week as they prepare for Linfield.  I'll be surprised if the Cats don't win big...

The Lute offense has been just as productive as the Cat offense. In fact, their QB has thrown it more times than Elliott has and completed just two fewer. Their total yards are very similar with Elliot getting just 43 more yards on four fewer attempts. The running game looks similar as well. In fact, the Cats have only three more yards rushing than do the Lutes. The leading rusher for the Lutes with 71 net yards is their QB. Obviously, total yards are close as well. Both defenses will be tested. The difference. The Cats have an experienced and proven defense whereas the Lutes are young and have yet to prove much. As a result, the Cats will stop the Lute offense and the Lutes will not slow down the Cat offense. Result? Cats 58 Lutes 17

pirat, I like Thor.

d-train, just stated they don't have much room for error. With Linfield next week, a loss to EOU means the best they can do is 6-2 (w/ one loss being non D-3, yes). That's enough to get in, but it would make things more difficult the rest of the season because they would likely need to win out. If they were to drop just one more (and they still have to play Willamette, PLU, and UPS), they could fall to 5-3 and then they're in trouble.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Pirat

Thor it is. Thought you might go for Daniel.

Pirat.... No luck picking up a replacement game for L&C? are they still looking?

Nothing yet Tux. From looking at the schedules it appears that 10/29 might be the busiest day in college football not too many open dates on that day.  There are a couple but I have no idea if the athletic department has contacted them.

The longer this goes on; the less likely I think there will be a replacement game.
