GAME DAY #6:
The 60th Annual Wagon Wheel Game
#17 Willamette Bearcats vs. Lewis & Clark Pioneers

WHEN: 1:00 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Griswold Stadium, Portland, OR

RECORDS: Willamette 4-1, 1-0 NWC; Lewis & Clark 0-3, 0-1 NWC

ON THE AIR: Audio at www.willamette.edu/athletics, video at www.ustream.tv/lcpioneers

BRIEFLY: Traveling trophies have a long, storied history in college football, but in all of Oregon, there is only one: the Wagon Wheel.  For 59 of the last 60 seasons, the winner of the annual Willamette-Lewis & Clark football game has earned the right to keep an historic Conestoga Wagon Wheel at its campus until the next meeting. The Wheel, created by the Blue Key men's honor society in 1948, has resided at McCulloch Stadium for 14 of the last 15 years, and Speckman is adamant that is where it belongs.
"The Wheel is a very big deal," the coach said. "We lost it in 2000, and it was devastating. ... We'll bring it up to Portland, but we're coming back with it."
The Pioneers have brought in their largest recruiting class in 25 years and are fielding their largest squad since 1992, marking yet another step forward in their long rebuilding process. Still, L&C suffered a 43-14 loss to previously winless Pacific Lutheran last week, and the Bearcats' biggest problem might be Griswold Stadium's old-style AstroTurf.  But Speckman thinks the Pioneers will be fired up for the Wheel Game: "With a team like them in a rivalry, you've got to be on your toes. We know they'll have something new planned for us."
"It's a slippery slope from the penthouse to the outhouse." - Mark Speckman

Just rolled into Spokane...about to grab a bite with Linfield SID Kelly Bird and Dave Hansen.  Be sure to hang out during halftime of the Linfield radio boardcast as Wildcat11 will be stopping by for a few minutes.  I'll be sure to give a shoutout to the Northwest Conference posters.
