Out of curiosity what would the salary difference be for Speckmans new job?
Is it completely private?
ANybody have an idea of average salaries for DIII coaches and 1AA coaches?

Money always plays a part whether we like to admit it or not.

Update on Speckman: As far as I can tell, he's scheduled to be interviewed by PSU today.  The Collegian isn't printing this week, but the sports editor of the Vanguard at PSU has promised to keep me posted.  Whatever I hear will come straight here.  My gut tells me that Speck won't leave - the man has the Bearcat claw tattooed on his ankle after all - but I won't feel settled until the process is finished.

Another PSU/Speckman update, sort of

My personal take is this would be a bad move for all parties if Speckman was to be chosen to take the job. I get the impression that Willamette's program has become interwoven with Speckman as an individual, and it would be quite damaging for the program for him to leave under these circumstances. 2nd, I don't know his full background, but I'm pretty sure he's only coached HS and WU, and I think it would be asking a lot for any long time d3 coach to jump directly to the head of a 1-AA school like this. So many different rules and regs, let alone just the difference in culture from a d3 to scholarship school. Not saying he couldn't do it, but I would want someone who has a little more time at that level, at least as an assistant.

Obviously, Speckman is interested in the PSU job, or he would have pulled his name from consideration by now. Willamette would face the challenge of maintaining their winning program, it's not easy to do, even with talented, returning players. It was surprising to me how low the attendance figures are for PSU, even dating back earlier this decade, when they had good teams. I remember a Vikings squad with Terry Charles crushing Hawaii at their place back in the day.

Wasn't Speckman on a short list of four a week ago? Now it's five?
Hope he stays at Willamette. He's a good fit for D3.

From D3football.com ( I don't know the year this article was written, sorry):

BSC coach to lead new D-I program
Joey Jones, who coached Birmingham-Southern in its inaugural Division III football season, has left to become the first varsity head coach at South Alabama. Like at Birmingham-Southern, Jones will be in charge of building a new program at USA, which will start at the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) in 2009 and transition to Football Bowl Subdivision in 2013.

South Alabama has had a club football program for several years.

Jones informed BSC athletic director Joe Dean Jr., the staff and players that he was leaving to accept the offer from South Alabama athletic director Joe Gottfried on Feb. 14. The Mobile Press-Register reports the position's salary is $275,000, an improvement from the $150,000 total compensation package at B-SC.

From Amswers.com:
What is the salary of a ncaa division III head football coach?
According to research by Hendrix officials, the average salary for a head football coach in NCAA III is $65,000 a year and the average recruiting budget is $35,000. Taken from here: http://thecabin.net/stories/050708/loc_0507080007.shtml

Keep in mind that at the DIII level, coaches teach classes also.

I would be curious to see if THE FLY would be effective at that higher level of play. Of course, certain teams use parts or aspects of the fly in their system, but they don't use it exclusively like Speckman would. I would think with the right athletes at that higher level, it could be quite a force. Mainly because it's so hard to prepare for. At that level you could also get some pretty studly Lineman, QB's and skill people to make it work.

I personally have mixed emotions about  Speckman leaving Willamette, if he were to....I think he has a pretty good sense of humor and with him there, Linfield and Willamette have got quite a rivalry going....but I don't see Willamette as being the force that it is right now without him... so if he left, I wouldn't mind that much.... :D

Willamette isn't my favorite school either, Blue, but I do like Speckman. Without him, who knows what would happen to the Bearcats? We need to keep our strong teams strong, IMO, although it sure is fun to beat up on Willamette.

I notice Oregon State uses aspects of the fly from time to time, that may not be a coincidence. It would be interesting if a D1, D2, or D3 program in the west tries the Georgia Tech triple option attack in the future. It's been very successful in the ACC, when some thought it would fail. If you're a struggling program like Washington State or Lewis & Clark, why not try something different to win more games?

GHC;  I'm not here to cheerlead or defend The Tommies however I think your prediction is a bit exagerated.

TDT could throw out a predictable score but supposedly he's been banned.

Back from the Land of no computers (my Mom's apt!), I am so thrilled to see that Linfield came through so well this past Saturday!!  Much good luck for the following game.  Will it be in Linfield?  Against whom?  I feel so out of it as I usually know more details than I seem to know this go-round.

ALL THE BEST TO THE RED AND PURPLE!!
Hope to see a bunch of you'all soon in Salem, V-I-R-G-I-N-I-A!!

I believe if Linfield and Wisconsin-Whitewater win, the Cats will be at the Warhawks on Dec. 12. If WW loses, Linfield would be the highest remaining seed in the West bracket, so the Cats would earn the right to host on 12-12.
Not good for me.  They are my 2 favorite teams.   :'( :'(

Roop,

That might be an accurate score if UST was playing Monmouth again.

Understood, may I suggest a tiebreaker? How about rooting for the team with more national championships, and the oldest winning streak in the history of college football?
