FYI: I read in this morning's paper (Arizona Republic) that Arizona State opens their season at home against Portland State.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, MonroviaCat.  My dad passed away 16 years ago and it seems like yesterday at holiday time and at certain moments of the day or seasons of the year.  Olinemom.

Since we can stretch the Super Bowl this year to Division III because Pierre Garcon did so well to get there, I'll have a take...
(What the heck was he doing at Norwich University in Vermont to begin with BTW?)

It was my kind of out-on-the-end-of-the-Bell-Curve game with the Saints taking the ball at the coin flip instead of deferring, the on-side kick to begin the half by a punter who does not usually kick off, and the going for two when you had a 5 point lead. Fun stuff. Without those risks the game might have been as predictable as the half-time entertainment. Still good enough to watch but, so what?

It seems to me there were a good many catchable balls that were not completed.   I DID like the receiver – forget who he was - that did not use gloves to aid in catching the ball. That is also rarely seen nowadays.

Makes me think they planned for the onside kick before the game started. I was going for the Colts to win. I got real tired real fast hearing about how the saints deserved to win because of Katrina. ???

For example: An excerpt; New Orleans explodes with joy after Saints win
By Allen Johnson (AFP)

"This is what New Orleans deserves," said the warrior, Larry Jehle Junior, a patient transporter for a local hospital. "We have all been through so much in the last five years."

Four generations of one family gathered for a Super Bowl party in the Bucktown neighborhood a short walk from the 17th Street Canal which burst during Katrina.

"The Saints are not the same as other teams in other sports," said physician Lisha Barre, who flew in from Colorado to watch the game with her family.

"They represent the rebirth of the city."

That's what the Monday morning stats say. With Archie Peyton 31-45 that gives the game a 63-84 flavor with 21 passes that did not connect. So, what's that, about 1/4 of the passes were not complete? Forget the pick-six to seal the game and the non-hold by Clark on another possible interception, that would leave room for

I remember The Man shaking his head at least once at a spiral that went through Garcon's gloves.

Terry Porter went to Wisconsin Stevens Point.  He did pretty well in the NBA.  :)

??? ???

Several d3 players have been to the Super Bowl.  Pete Metzelaars went FOUR times (and scored a TD).  Ken Anderson threw for 2 TDs and rushed for 1.  Others have also been there.

Several d3 players have been in the NBA.  Terry Porter was NAIA.  Jack Sikma (NAIA/D3) had a better pro career.  I liked Terry, but what is your point?

Terry Porter is a legend in Oregon, where he led the Trail Blazers to two NBA finals.  The point is that DIII players (UWSP is DIII now, guess it wasn't then) can make an impact here and there. :)

Dennis Rodman and Scott Pippin both NAIA players.  Devon George was another out of the UW-DIII systems.

WC11, I see you included some of the Linfield ladies in your Hardin-Simmons clip. They are a pleasant addition.

That's a nice piece from Taylor Avritt, too. For you younger guys, his dad Odis was a  Wildcat standout back in the day.

Yes, I think Odis played running back on the 1965 squad which reached the NAIA title game.

The blog with Taylor Avritt helps the winter move along. Thanks.

I am going to project here... Taylor is really motivated to get stronger, faster, quicker and cannot wait for some spring ball.

Preparation and opportunity meeting in the semi-finals in Wisconsin was not a pleasant experience for Taylor.  I venture he has dreamt about it and looks out the window in class and thinks about it.

A bit ago I stated how I liked the bucking the odds with risky calls like the Saints did to help win the Super Bowl.  I liked the way LINFIELD went for it on 4th and 5 at the Whitewater 48 yard line down 17-20 with 6:00 left. For whatever the reason Taylor found himself with the ball and hightailed it to the LINFIELD sideline with one guy to beat – and slipped on a cut. One carry, minus two yards.

I venture he is going to erase the frustration in 2010 where he will have the full support of his team and his fans.

Hello NWC!  Haven't been on the Post Patterns in a while.  Great feature on Taylor Avritt, he's a great kid and a very hard worker.  He's worked for every snap he's gotten and should have a good impact next year for his Sr. Campain.  Missin the Catdome, but should be back for summer camp again coming up in June.  VERY interested to see what Pacific does in the NWC next year, obvsiously they will have some growing pains but seems like they have a good staff put together up there... Sounds like the coaches at Linfield are after some good kids from what I'm hearing!!!
