FightBearcats

Eyewitness report from Stevens Point.

Honestly, I was a little nervous when the Pointers ran off two touchdowns in the first quarter.  SP couldn't do anything wrong and did a lot right.  Then the Bearcats got it in gear and ran off four scores in a row from the end of the first quarter through the second.  A final WU touchdown in the fourth put the game out of reach for Stevens Point.

The Bearcats D stopped the Pointers three times in a row in the third and then the Pointers fell apart in the third and fourth with two false starts, a facemask penalty, and two fumbles, one on their own four yard line that led to the Bearcats' last TD.

The first game answers questions and WU answered several.  They still tend to get behind early and have to catch up.  I would like them to stop doing that right away!  Fortunately, the Bearcats were more than capable of making the necessary adjustments.  The O and D lines really stepped up.  The first interception in the first quarter was the turning point.  The Pointers' quarterback, a transfer from Northern Michigan, is quite good and moved them well.  The team mistakes (and a second interception) really hurt them.  But WU was clearly the better team.  The Pointers' quarterback then injured his ankle or leg and left the game with short time left in the fourth.  They have had really high hopes this year, lots of injuries last year killed their season, and this doesn't look good.  No injuries for WU, we've had bad ones in the first games the last 4 (I think) seasons.  That's a relief.

This was a good win for the Bearcats and for the Northwest Conference.  Final score WU 33, SP 14.  On to Hardin Simmons!

Congrats Bearcats.  Good win.  That ought to build some character going into next weeks game.  Good luck.

Linfield and Willamette have been able to shut them down in the last 3 games our conference has played them.

Here' that memory problem surfacing again.
I enjoyed being on hand to watch the Cat's beat Stevens Point in Wisconsin back in ought-4; the Bearkitties whomped 'em today...who/when got the third win over their conference?

Linfield also defeated the Pointers at McMinnville in 2005.

Hey cawcdad

Just got on for a few minutes before heading home. Yes, I will be at Eagle Rock for the Oxy-UPS game on the 11th. I think I get in early enough from Boise to go over and watch Linfield. Hadn't thought about that, glad I read your post!

idalogger!  Great to see you back on the board.  I'm looking forward to seeing you down at McCulloch this season - we'll do our best to avoid lightning. ;)

For those interested, the Bearcats are safely in Stevens Point.  Hopefully the trip was smoother than last year's to Moorhead.

Hey good to hear from you Bearcat Press. Great win today! I will be in Salem for the game, but am currently celebrating a Logger win. I was so impressed wth the work done by the Pacific staff, the effort of the Boxer players, and just want to say welcome back Pacific.

Many of us, I'm sure, were anticipating the emergence of Pacific back to football after a 19 year snooze.
Well, they roared back (IMHO) at Baker Stadium and did themselves proud in a re-start of football for the Boxers.
I'm really looking forward to this programs "Climbing the ladder" and  getting back to business in the conference.
This is all I could find to read about from the UPS-v-Pacific contest:

GHC, after the clouds cleared off it was a good day for boating.

The Loggers will face a tough one next week. They made a number of mistakes against Pacific, and Oxy will capitalize if they do the same, I am sure.

I am going to the Linfield-CLU game on Saturday. Should make for a great day with 2 football games! Hope to meet some of the Cat fans in Thousand Oaks.

Yes, that was a solid performance by Pacific in their first game back, regardless of how UPS finishes the season. If Pacific turns out to be better than expected, the game versus Lewis & Clark could be interesting. I would think it would be a huge setback for the rebuilding Pioneer program if they somehow lose to the Boxers.

My sources in Southern California say Cal Lutheran is ready for revenge and will be sky high next Saturday.  Sure hope the Cats are not overconfident and think they will waltz in for a win.  Cal Lutheran is no push over on their home field and could be a surprise waiting for the Cats.  From the pre-season write up it sounds as if the Cats are pretty comfortable with their abilities this season.....one game at a time starts Saturday.

GO CATS....just don't overlook Cal Lutheran!
LEAVE NO DOUBT

I think the 'Cats are very aware that CLU is going to be an extremely tough opponent and the fact it's on the road makes it only doubly tough.  Bottom line, is Linfield cannot worry about what CLU is up to but just prepare the best they can and control what they can control.

I love the kids on this team and the way they go about their business.  Go 'Cats!
