River's Question: What's a "south forty?"

Now there's a question that cries out for an answer from Linfield's unofficial/official sports historian...drum roll, please...D O.C.

A South Forty next week would really help.
What's a "south forty?"

In the everyday world, "south forty" means this:

In D O.C.'s cryptic world, who knows what it means.

OxyBob comes through again.

Way down in the south corner of the LINFIELD campus, where the Ag Dep't. is located, just beyond the Animal Husbandry building, there is a crypt where student fanatics go to hold a bonfire before a big game. There is no marking on the crypt so you can imagine the rumors that have been passed around over the decades – even before THE STREAK.

The Wartmobile is grounded for a short time in Yachat as we wait for the fog to lift.  Mrs. Warthog is in no mood to drive the coast highway down to the sea lion caves in this type of weather.  I hope any Oregonians who were behind us yesterday on the drive from Bend to Florence forgive us.  I wanted to go pick up the pace and take the corners faster, but my passenger was insistant that the speed limit signs were posted about 10 miles per hour faster than was safe to drive.

So far one of the highlights of our westward excursion was watching five college kids base jump off the Snake River Canyon bridge in Twin Falls. Idaho.  I wonder if their mothers know what they do in their spare time?

It sounds if there should be electricity in the air at the Catdome on Saturday.  We're looking forward to it.

I envy you two on your trip.
I think the law is still 7 cars behind you and you have to pull out of the way when safe. You have tourist rights since there is no sales tax and the state relies on your happiness.

Isn't it amazing to think those bridges were mostly WPA projects and there was no 'coast highway' until then?
People had to follow river roads (or logging) down to the river mouth and then negotiate how to cross to the other side. Stitch (that's for you coco) and I swam across the Siletz River one time when they were filming "Sometimes a Great Notion".

They were simply going fishing - only way to the good holes.

Big Saturday on the way.  Need to re-fill my Nitro-tab Rx for game day.
I hate sports! ;)

Not quite sure what to make of this sentence from Pacific's press release on their game against L&C this weekend, which is also the Pios' homecoming:

QuoteLewis & Clark will celebrate their homecoming this Saturday and have the Boxers in for the occasion.  The Pioneers last won their homecoming game on Oct. 24, 2009, beating a powerhouse squad from Crown College 57-35.

Really?  A team that finished 1-3 in the UMAC is a powerhouse?

Fun story: my mom was staying at Salishan Lodge during filming, and the cast was staying there as well.  While walking a cross a bridge, my mom and her best friend passed Henry Fonda, who was walking the other direction.  They wanted to be cool, so they didn't say anything to him; at which point he stopped, turned around, and stared at them as if to say "Don't you know who I am?  I'm Henry Fonda!"

Maybe it was an attempt at sarcasm????

So I'm guessing Mrs. Warthog didn't join the basejumpers.
You might enjoy the drive up the coast and into the valley more than she will, but once she gets here, she's in the flatlands for the weekend. I hope this damn humidity is gone by then.

Saturday's game should be a barnburner, that's for sure.

D O.C., are you going to tell the posters about the south forty? How quickly people forget. Maybe they could be compared to the end zone crowd in football, only rowdier and more tightly contained.

I've seen the basejumpers down in Twin a few times. Perrine Bridge spans the Twin Falls Canyon there, a few miles from where Evel Knievel attempted his ill-fated jump. The kids pack their chutes in the parking lot north of the bridge, walk out to the middle of the bridge, then jump out and away, backwards off of the span. It is pretty cool. ONLY attempted on calm days - a little breeze can made a big difference from that height.

Attached is a shot I took a few weeks ago. Yikes!

Did anyone else check out the plays of the week videos?  The tip drill one to me was absolutely incredible.  I don't think I've ever seen or heard of that happening.  Wow!
