Practice field is turf--  Game field is same as ever

I'm sure there's a good reason why a school would replace a crummy practice field with turf instead of putting the turf on its crummy stadium field...but does anyone know what that reason is?

I believe the City of Tacoma was involved with the financing of the practice field and for whatever reason they turfed the practice field.  Maybe it was a matter of access to the public since it was City backed?  No matter, it's a strange setup.

Not to mention that the UPS practice field has lights while the stadium doesn't.  That's a major issue on overcast, rainy days.

With Menlo gone Baker Stadium is just the worse in the NWC and it's not even close.  Let's fire up a quick NWC stadium/field ranking

1. Linfield - Duh!  Best atmosphere easily.  Rat honks will point to their sod but I like our turf better.
2. Rats - Pine Bowl is a great set up and the sod is very nice.  Bleachers/Press Box are booty but still a great venue
3. L&C - They have an awesome backdrop up on Palatine Hill and the new turf should help. Terrible Parking
4. Willamette - BPress will come unglued they are down this far but there is something lacking at McCulloch.  Besides when Linfield visits the place is a little underwhelming.
5. PLU - Sparks has been upgraded but it's still 20 minutes away from Parkland.  The place can rock with a good crowd.
6. UPS - It's just......ok.

N/A: Pacific.  I have no idea since I haven't seen it and will have to save judgment.

Absolutely agree with your assessments. The only time I was at the Pine Bowl I was very impressed with how the field mysteriously appeared after the morning fog lifted. How did they manage that fx?

Wildcat11...I pretty much agree with you on your analysis of the venues. I'd rank mine in this order though......

Linfield - home of 4 National Championship football teams.
Willamette....I like the drive and there are a few good places to get something to eat before the game...Magoos is one of them.
L& C.......it's a short jaunt and there are plenty of coffee shops near by. Plus they have a very cool old school style dining hall.
PLU...there's just something about going to PLU and seeing Frosty in his yellow sweatpants.
Whitworth....never been there....but I heard Spokane has a great downtown area to explore.
Pacific....short drive......Forest Grove is a nice town. It has a little downtown area.
UPS...the Elk's Lodge in Tacoma is right on your right about a mile or 2 before you get to campus.

Thanks Gig.....I've heard that UPS is more of a passing team now. I remember seeing their QB last year and thought he was good. That makes sense because I think their new coach is from Redlands. So they are getting more balanced.

Safe travels everyone.  See you at UPS

I'd like to pass on some sad news...my good friend TuxGuy's dad passed away this last weekend. Dr. Paul Howard was a longtime professor at Linfield College in the Sociology Department. He worked along side my father who was in the Math Department for over 30 years at Linfield..... and our families were close friends and also very active members of the First Baptist Church. I took a sociology class from Dr. Howard at Linfield and found it most interesting...one thing I really remember about the class was.... a field trip to the Oregon State Penitentiary. The thing I remember most about that trip was that their were several Linfield football players in the class ......at one point, one of the prisoners looked at us and said that he was "going to break the leg of one of the girls" in the class if they got closer. At that point I remember 3 of the Linfield football players getting between her and the inmate and saying...."who's going to break who"s leg"? It's just a side story...there are many more about the TuxGuy and the Howard Family to remember....I wish TuxGuy and his family peace in this time of sorrow for the loss of their father Dr. Paul Howard.....

You're in our prayers.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Tuxguy and his family!!  I have been there.

p.s.  Kudos for the two of you for sticking around.  Wonder if we'll hear from River prior to next season.  There have been several Willamette posters who come on, talk trash, and then disappear but you guys are the real deal.

Thanks for the classy, sucky remarks.  I have not gone away, simply sulking in my cave since last week.  The Wildcats were great.  The Bearcats were not.  They can do better and will.

Go Bearcats!

Glad to see you stick around this time.  I agree with your synopsis of last week and also that the bearcats will play better.
Go Cats!

Proud Papa Joe

goodmorning fellow posters. Just rulled into Ghresem. Stoped at the Best Western and droped my wife off. She is going to spend the day with my son Manny and his Wife. He has a rugby tourny this weekend. Getting ready to leave the hotel and head north, see you cat fans in a bit. Safe driving everyone.

P.S. Tuxguy, your dad must have been a great person, because Linfield is made up of great people. God Bless, he will always be with you.

River,

Being a strong Linfield fan, I still have much respect for Willamette.   You should win out. You have only lost to two strong teams.   Nothing to be ashamed of.

Next year, we must beat you in Salem.   Not going to be easy.

GO WILDCATS! GO!

GO CATS! GO!

You are so right, George. Next year will not be easy, neither were the 9 wins out of the last 11 games.
The losses weren't easy either.

Heading out to Forest Grove to cheer on the Bearcats against Pacific U.   Just realized this morning that it's only our 2nd conference game for the year!   It always seems like the season's over after the Linfield game -- guess it was early this year!

So, go Bearcats!!  It'll be fun to watch a new team, and hopefully, our OLD team -- the one I'm used to seeing.   ;D

Welcome back, River.   I totally identify with the sulking -- there's just no words . . .

My condolences, Tuxguy. I know that losing (one of) your parents is always tough.

You'll be in my prayers.
