Love this old school Lute week.  Sparks should be rocking as the Wildcats come knockin.  Let's go 'Cats!

When was the last time the Lutes were in the playoffs?

In 2001.  PLU, Whitworth, and Linfield tied for the NWC title.  PLU and Whitworth went to the playoffs.

2001 playoff snub...still a big pile of crap.  However, the end result was the fuel to the fire of that great 2002 team.

Ah yes, the Leave No Doubt year, that great phrase that Linfield created and made come true.

Going back to the late 60s, we've had monumental battles with PLU, and more close games than I could count if I took off my shoes. There were years when we'd beat them by a single point, only to have them do the same to us the next year. There were probably more ties, and one, two and three point games with PLU than any other team in the conference. They were so dangerous, but always classy and sportsmanlike, and you never left early.

Afterward Frosty and Ad always grabbed each other and hugged and slapped each other on the back like long-lost relatives.

I'm glad to see PLU having a better season this year.

Congrats to several standout Willamette football players on being selected Student Athletes of the week in Scott Schoettgen and Terrell Malley. Schoettgen was all-systems-go versus UPS, while tying the Willamette Career TD catches at 29. Looking to get the big 3-0 against Menlo!

Malley couldn't be stopped on special teams, returning only four kickoffs for 126 yards. His last one was 40 yards, after which he turned around on the next play and rushed the last 39 yards for the score.

Is it too early to do preseason NWC player of the year predictions? I know most of you Linfielders will pick all Wildcats, but I'm interested to see what everyone has to say.

Also, just for kicks, those of you who follow the ENTIRE northwest conference, who do you think this season's top players in skill positions are? I'm talking Quarterback, tailback, flanker/reciever, and maybe even a defensive list as well.

I think Ford from PLU at WR, Adam Anderson at Whitworth (he's their entire offense), Boehme at QB to name a few....
on D:  Linfield's Hedin and Willamette's Pineda obviously.....
Go Cats!

Thanks for posting that coco. That was our sons first year at Linfield, and although he didn't play any downs that year (red-shirt), it was our introduction to Division III football and the NWC. What a year to start with!

Hedin's been insane. I love watching that guy. The others are all obvious, like you said, especially Boehme, but then I'm biased.

Your boy came at a good time and made plenty of contributions in his years! You got to see some prime football.

Hedin stands out for sure as one of the best defensive players in the conference. If anyone is to overtake Pineda's POY crown, it'll be him.
Coco, I don't think you need bias to favor Boehme. Dude is the comlete package.

I agree with Boehme and Anderson, but I think as the season goes on Schoettgen will prove to be a better reciever than Ford. His size and speed are an automatic mismatch for almost any cornerback he goes up against.

How did ties result back in the days?  One regular sudden death type over time or how was it?  And when did it end?

Was he one of the Linfielders up for pre-season AA? Looks like he is proving it on the field... I saw on the NCAA's website today that he jumped over CLU's Jordan Barta (an Oregon guy) to #1 in the Nation on the sacks per contest list.

CLU has built a strong tradition of All Everything D-Ends so I am hoping to see Barta stay up there on this list and compete with your guy Hedin.

As much as I love Scott Schoettgen, Greg Ford has proven for four years that he's an elite Division III receiver.  He has the complete skill package - including the ability to throw. :o

Until a relatively few years ago, there was no such thing as overtime.

Not sure of the time - perhaps mid '90s?

Will also mention the freshman QB for Lewis and Clark is piling up some nice stats playing for an improved (but still in need of more) Pio team.  I think if they can surround this guy with more talent he may really be something to reckon with over the next few years....

Thanks, Pat.  Wow, I almost nailed it off the top of my head - 1996 is pretty much 'mid '90s'!
