Kansas star RB, homecoming king dies after 99-72 game

By Cameron Smith

A near-record game near Kansas City Thursday night turned tragic Friday morning when a star running back was pronounced dead hours after he arrived at a hospital following an injury suffered in the game. Spring Hill (Kan.) senior running back, linebacker and homecoming king Nathan Stiles died Friday morning at University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, just hours after his teammates finished off an astounding 99-72 victory over Osawatomie in the season finale for both teams.

I'm thinking that, historically, her chances of being a kicker are better at Willamette . . . ;D

I think the mentality of the NFL (WWF) is moving down to the college game and even further into the high school ranks. What has happened to the "Old School Tackle?" ie. Aim for the waist or legs, drive through your opponent, wrap the ball carrier up. etc. How many times have you seen a ball carrier gain yardage because the tacklers are trying to strip the ball or attempt to just knock him down? Too many injuries are happening because of this "lazy" way of playing defense. We all enjoy "Big Hits", but at what expense. I'd rather see a player end their carrier with a knee injury than suffer a head injury or die of a concussion due to a big hit. To be a great tackler you have to practice on the fundamentals.

Just my thoughts.

Well....I factored all that in when considering the comparable chances of L&C winning out vs WC14 enrolling in PLU or WILLAMETTE.  I took a wild stab that the chance of going to PLU was less than the chance of going to WILLAMETTE.  Thereby trying to convey my belief that L&C has virtually no chance.

agreed, leading with the head is dangerous for the tackler and hitting high with the head is dangerous for both players.  Not sure what to do, better helmets??  penalties and suspensions until the coaches and players get it??

The more sophisticated and protective the helmets get, the more comfortable tacklers and ball carriers will become using their heads as the focal point of laying a blow. Taking off facemasks is not the solution, but you better believe that if a linebacker busted his nose wide open on tackles or got his bell rung every time he lead with his head it would become a much less routine habit to tackle that way.

I think another thing that people fail to put an emphasis on is runners putting their head down. If you watch a running back head into a pile, what is his natural reaction? To cover the ball and duck his head, in a protective position. It's a natural move to "ball" up like this when about to take a hit. I think the only real solution is to teach kids how to tackle and run without putting their head down. Football is a violent sport and the way the game is now played not only are guys bigger and faster than ever, but the style of play is more e wide open leaving more and more room for high speed contact. Linebackers are running free in the secondary and D-ends are getting wide open shots on ball carriers with screens and spread formations opening up the field.

I had numerous head injuries in my career and it was something you just played through... you didn't tell the trainers because you didn't want to come off the field. You are obviously shaken up significantly, but it is not like breaking a bone where it totally debilitates you, you still feel like you can play depending on how severe it is.  I switched to a Revolution helmet my sophomore year and it really helped, I only had a few concussions in the three years I wore it. I think the advancement in helmets is a great thing to protect heads with the way the game has changed, but I do beleive that it is up to tacklers and runners to not take advantage of the safer helmet and use it as an excuse to lead with their heads.

I think the one thing that's easy to forget with the regional rankings is that some weak AQs aren't even ranked right now. MWC anyone?

Chaos in the CCIW and IIAC are probably your best friends at this point. A Central upset might keep both Coe and the Dutch out...maybe. If Auggie could pull off a win and Wheaton knocked off NCC, anything might be possible. A few OAC upsets (Ohio Northern) wouldn't hurt either...
Obviously a Bethel loss would be great for you as well, but I'm praying against that outcome  ;D
Aside from playoffs, the weeks when the regional rankings are released are my favorite part of the season. Everything gets a lot more interesting and the games seem to take on an extra level of intensity. For Bethel, Linfield, PLU, CLU, Central, etc. the playoffs have really already begun. None of them can afford another loss and if they keep winning, they all have at least a shot at the dance.
Man I love DIII playoffs! I'm hoping PLU wins out just to keep the heat on the selection committee

I was going to retort that Linfield could take a loss to L&C or Whitworth and still win the conference but there are so many scenarios left where they wouldn't take the crown that my head started to spin and I figured it would be best to say that the cats should just leave no doubt as they like to say.
yes--isn't lewis and clark still in the hunt????  They just have to beat Linfield, Willamette, and PLU???? :) (in reverse order)

I took a quick look at the standings and remaining games.  Statistically both L&C and Whitworth have a better shot at the title then PLU or Willamette.  If either team wins out (beating Linfield) and the other one loses to Linfield, they would win the conference title (by virtue of a head to head win against Linfield and a 2-way tie record, 5-1).  PLU and Willamette would likely need two losses by Linfield.  PLU and Willamette can each help Linfield and themselves by winning this weekend.  Of course I think it's highly unlikely that either L&C or Whitworth can win out.  Additionally, if Linfield loses to Whitworth AND  Lewis and Clark then the winner of PLU-Willamette would likely be the conference champ if they have not lost in the meantime.

In order to keep it simple, I think I will go with Cat's over Whitworth next week taking AQ  ;D
Not that simple.  If Linfiled beats Whitworth but loses to Lewis and CLark and L&C beats PLU, Willamete, and Linfield, Lewis and Clark will be tied with Linfield and will bget the AQ by virtue of the head to head win.  I realize that L&C winning out is about the same chance as WC14 enrolling in PLU as a kicker but still......they have a chance.
I still like the simple thought I have ;)
