Also, an unsubstantiated report 4 Wesley players were arrested over Thanksgiving for burglarizing the campus.

OK, I'm ready for a major depletion of my karma.  I just have to say, I was embarrassed by the behavior of Willamette fans and their football team when I visited Linfield this fall.

I was standing near the track when the team came out for the second half.  Now I'll admit the coaches left the team to head to the sidelines and left the players to have some bonding time.  That aside, there were little kids and grandparents around when the Willamette captains gave the pep-talk to the team.  It was laced with enough MFers (describing what they thought of Linfield) and other F words that it would make a sailor blush.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this language exists as teams get themselves fired up, however I would assume most D3 private colleges limit this verbage to the locker room rather than on the edge of the field where it can be overheard by parents, grandparents and little kids.  I lost any respect I ever had for Willamete at that time.

Beyond the reprehensible behavior of their team, the Willamette student/fans were as unsportsmanlike as their football team.  I would love seeing every other team in the NWC kick ass against Willamette for the next ten years.  While I was only around 250-300 Willamette students that day, my observation was: what a bunch of low class individuals make up Willamette's student body.
This is a family website, please keep your language clean.   ;D

When I read this my immediate reaction was "Oh, no.  Not again."

We've been through this back and forth over fan and team behavior many times.  It's no secret that there's no love lost between Willamette and Linfield.  Both sides can point to egregious behavior by the other's students and supporters.  Oh, yes, it's not one-sided.

It's tempting to respond in-kind but I don't want to do that.

Can't we all just put this stuff to rest?

Not unsubstantiated -- there's a story in What We're Reading on the front page and we linked to it also from Triple Take overnight.

Warthog, just going to be blunt here. Your response to my questions seemed pretty mild after spouting off with extremely rude claims like "a bunch of low class individuals make up Willamette's student body." I am a Willamette student, and I take serious offense to that. You're entitled to your opinion, but maybe you should rethink exactly how you verbalize thing and in which medium you decide to do it. That's part of being mature. I'm not starting any fights here, but claims like those are completely unnecessary.

If you were so direly offended by the actions of Willamette students, I'd suggest you send an email to either our Athletic Director, Mark Majeski, or our President M. Lee Pelton. Posting something so rude on a message board (intended for discussion of Football, that is the game in between the sidelines and endzones) makes you look utterly foolish. Kill my karma for saying it if you need to, but some lines of mutual respect on these boards must be upheld. I don't know why it took you over 2 months to post your interpretation of the game, but your message was not timely, either.

To quote Pat Coleman's signature, "Let's discuss (sports) in a positive way, sometimes kidding each other with no disrespect." I feel disrespected by the insensitive way you said what you said, not to mention the post was in no way about "sports." Posting this on a message board (where no one who has any power to do anything about the situation will EVER EVER read it) either dictates you're looking to start fights, or just seriously lack any class of your own.

I hope you see the error in your post, and even consider deleting it. We're all trying to get along here (as much as fans of opposing schools can), not taking cheap shots.

Lest we forget:

1941 Willamette Pearl Harbor Footbal Team

As long as Americans remember Pearl Harbor, Willamette's 1941 football team will be in the minds of Salem-area residents and followers of the University. For many people, head coach Roy S. 'Spec' Keene's Bearcat team and Pearl Harbor go hand-in-hand.

On the gridiron that year, the bearcats forged an impressive 8-2 record; including six shutouts.

A personal note. Coming from a Military family, my dad served 23 years in the Navy (He left high school and enlisted not too long after the attack on Pearl Harbor) , this story holds a special place in my heart.
If anyone is going to judge a University by the actions of a few, I choose to judge Willamette by the actions of the 1941 team.

I am a loyal Linfield Wildcat fan. To me there is no other University/College that can match them. Have they always won? No. Have they had their share of unruly players/studnets? Of course. But my sentiments run deeper than that. I don't over look the "problems" I just appreciate more the hard work it takes to have a successful D3 program.

Lever Street

The Willamette losers were trailing Linfield 21-7 at halftime on their way to an embarrasing 35-7 loss.  What in the world would those bad Bearcats be dissing other than their own poor performance against the far superior (55 winning season) Cats?

Why would someone criticize someone who was so much better than they?

Willamette just better focus on trying to make the playoffs one time.
You can't get to CatDome without seeing Lever Street.   Go Linfield!

Plug in "Willamette Bearcats," and R&P has my sentiments down exactly.  +K.

Now let's drop this.

So did you give Warthog a plus or negative?! I think he deserves a plus for bringing it up after the season was over and providing some interesting conversation.

Warhog, I'm actually curious to know what about the behavior of the Willamette students offended you so much. I'm not going to turn this into a he-said/she-said game. However, I do feel like I deserve the right to defend my classmates.

Exactly where did you witness or interact with Willamette students who you considered an embarrassment? (sidenote: to be embarrassed, you would have to be a Willamette fan yourself). If you happened to walk over to our student section, what exactly did you hear? Maybe selective hearing is in place for Wildcat fans, for I myself was standing in the bleachers directly behind Willamette's sideline, to be passed by 3 Linfield students, one who issued the ever-pleasant phrase "F*** the F***ing F**s from Willamette!!" Not only in front of, but directed AT, parents and children.

I do not think that this individual's heinous actions are representative of the entire Linfield community whatsoever, and I think it is terribly unfair to judge students in the midst of an intense rivalry based on whatever you did or did not hear. We all have a lot of stake in the WU-Linfield rivalry, and temporary moments of frustration do not reflect one's character. As far as the Willamette players, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the way Speckman molds his players to fit that same level of classiness. Again, this is one of the most contentious rivalries in the NWC. Furthermore, your point of "Small-private school" is devoid of any worth; football is football, no matter where you're at man.

If you'd like, I can personally introduce you to all of our captains, all of which epitomize class. After being heckled and jeered by three rows of Linfield fans on my way to the visitor bleachers, I can't legitimize your claims concerning a lack of class at Willamette. We all love football, we are all passionate about it, and slip ups by individuals should in no way be an overarching stereotype for Willamette.

I'm sorry if someone wearing Willamette gear personally offended you, and hope we have the chance to change your mind in the future. GO BEARCATS!

Great observation and comment.

One of the members of that 1941 Willamette Pearl Harbor football team was Ted Ogdahl who would coach Willamette football in later years.  After Pearl Harbor he joined the Marine Corps, received the Purple Heart and Silver Star medals, and was left with permanent injuries.  He coached at Grant HS in Portland and is a member of the PIL Hall of Fame.  Ogdahl Field at Willamette is named in his honor.

Warty,

As someone who over the years that has been threaten to be spit on by WU students while filming on the sidelines, have been flipped off while interviewing Linfield players post game by WU students, almost gotten into a fight with a drunk WU student outside of WU's stadium because he was screaming at some Linfield grandparents for being "losers" (seriously...I'm not making that up...this couple was in their 70's and he was just dressing them down from 10 feet away), having almost got into another confrontation because another WU student as he was yelling at a group of adult Linfield fans telling us to "perform a sexual act on him" post game, etc, etc....You are ALWAYS welcomed back to the 'Catdome.   ;D
