. . . .  I never played against Schoettgen but from what I've seen during games (mostly online), I personally would rather play man on him than Ford. When I was at Whitworth we shut down Willamette's passing game and many of us DB's were able to cheat a lot and jump routes based on formation/down and distance. Willamette has some huge tendencies based on formation...too bad there so stinkin good at running their offense that there isn't much you can do about it. It's also too bad their tendencies still aren't as bad as Whitworth's lol

WU has been a run first team.  In the game against the Rats this year, Willamette's run offense was good enough to minimize the Bearcats' need to pass.  To the extent that Willamette used the pass against the Rats, the Bearcats did a good job.

QuoteThere can be no argument about what Chris Casey has done at Aloha, the exclamation point dotted Saturday with the Warriors' 34-13 victory over Tualatin for the school's first Class 6A state championship at Reser Stadium.

It's great for the community, great for the school, great for all of us in the program," said tailback Thomas Tyner, a breathtaking 6-1, 200-pound sophomore who carried 26 times for 163 yards and a touchdown.

The Warriors are a close-knit group of players who deflect praise to teammates and adore their coach.

"I don't know where to start when talking about Coach Casey," said Tyner, the state 100-meter champion as a freshman who will be the focus of a national recruiting push the next two years. "To sum it up in a word, it would be, 'Hard worker.' I guess that's two words."

"The hardest worker I've met in my life," said Jesse Bresser, a senior who had the game of his life on the state's biggest stage. "The only time Coach Casey is away from working for our football team is when he goes home to go to church. Then he rests up so he can get back here and do it again."

Casey's principles were born during his playing days at Linfield under the great Ad Rutschman. His position coach there was Mike Riley, and he later spent nine years working with Jay Locey running the Wildcat defense. Casey loves to win, especially at a place where it hadn't happened for the longest time.

OK. LINFIELD just has to hold serve since we have our running back beginning 2014.   8-)

. . . .

On your other point (509) I guess it's all a matter of perspective.  Linfield was always able to contain Ford and was only able to score vs Linfield last season vs our 2nd/3rd unit.  Ford is a stud but he never worried me headed into a game like Schoettgen did.  The guy killed us in 2008 and 2009 and Linfield put a HEAVY emphasis on Schoettgen in terms of defensive scheme this past season and we were finally able to limit him with a lot of attention.

[hard to admit] Next to Boehme, I would consider Schoettgen the best offensive skill player in the NWC the past couple of seasons. [/hard to admit]
My emphasis.
Which raises the issue of who should have been chosen for the All-Region team as WR, the "best offensive skill player" or the player with the best stats.

RECEPTIONS/GAME    Team Cl  G  Rec  Yds TD Long Avg/C Rec/G
----------------------------------------------------------------
1. Kniffin, Adam.......  UPS  SO  9   93  921 17   36   9.9   10.33
2. Ford, Greg..........   PLU   SR  9   51  843  9   73  16.5    5.67
3. Schoettgen, Scott... WU   SR 10  49 960 13   78  19.6   4.89
4. Moog, Isaac.........  PLU   SR  9   44  633  9   45  14.4   70.3
5. Slezak, Chris.......  LIN    SR 11   49  739  6   47  15.1  67.2

All five of the above made the NWC first team as WRs.  Only Kniffin made the All West Region Team.  WU had a 7-2 team record, UPS was 2-7.  Schoettgen probably had a greater impact on winning games for WU, Kniffin caught passes in losing efforts.  (UPS had two wins against Pacific, with only one close game losing against PLU).

Reminds me of Maki in the SCAIC for Pamona. The kid caught over 70 passes each year for the last 3 years ... but he and the QB were the only guys on the team that did anything. Have to respect the stats and the fact that they were able to accomplish that on a losing team without much help, but it makes you wonder if they would see the field or produce like that on a better squad.

Maki had made all region in years past but was left off of the All Region ranks this year, even after leading the SCIAC once again in receiving. Personally, as I receiver I just wanted to win - but it was hard not to envy a guy catching 15+ balls a game!

Having played against both guys, I would put Schoettgen above Ford. Ford was a big play burner that would make circus catches ... but for a day to day receiver Schoettgen was solid, and had size rarely found in D3 receivers considering his athletisicm. Woo was a better receiver than people give him credit for. He was a product of the fly system, but from playing with him for a few practices before he left Cal LU the guy ran some rediculously clean routes and had good hands. If he played in a system like Linfield or Cal Lu he would have put up big numbers as a slot receiver. Not that he was complaining, he ran the fly pretty well too.

With all of this said ... ERIC ROGERS is the truth and in my opinion the best I have seen in a while. I don't think he even knows how good he is at this point. He has put on quite a bit of weight for this season and still looked a little "thin"  :D but the kid did damage to the top defenses he played against this year, and has gotten consistently more physical. I would be bold enough to say he will be one of the best in the SCIAC's history by the end of his career, and will be a top player in the region for the next two years (IF HE CONTINUES TO GET BETTER AT THE RATE HE HAS PROGRESSED SO FAR). I'm sure Linfield is working on how to stop him right now...  ;D

At least Rogers gave CLU something to hang their hat on after that spanking at the 'Catdome.

Downshift from overdrive to first gear...climb the mountain!

I was out to the dome yesterday for a bit of excersize and was pleased
to see some of the lads were out as well; they've turned the corner and shifted thier focus ahead.  Love to see that now(no real surprise)!!!

Along with the few broken ankles he gave to Linfield DB's

Only things broken that game was Eric Hedin breaking the Linfield Single Season Sack Record and Nick Wallin's face mask when Drew Fisher absolutely cremated him.

Kingsmen,
Please forgive us NWC'ers. It's not that we think we're better than the SCIAC...it's that we know we're better

wildcat11,
That was mighty smart of the Linfield program to drop a game to Cal Lu this year...all just so other programs might pick up the phone? Who said you guys aren't as smart as Whitworth grads...

Bubs1856

Nice (509)....love the spin.  It was truly an attempt by the Cats to get Redlands to quit dodging us.  If it helps out the rest of the NWC, then even better.

I'll put a call into Coach Maynard and see if I can convince him to leave the 1st string at home so your stinkin Rats might have a chance next year. I'm pretty sure our second teamers can bring home a 5th straight win though.

(509)Rat

That's not why you should leave the 1st stringers home...isn't that how Maynard got an 8th year of eligibility for Selway???

Putting finishing touches on the Willamette game for the Linfield highlight DVD and I thought I screwed up because I keep showing what looked liked was the same clip of WU's Brian Widing getting sacked.....then I realized Linfield put him down about 15 times that game and I felt better I didn't mess up.

HAHA!!! Well played 11 ... That hit was brutal, and Hedin's performance was beastly. NO doubt about it.

Its ok, I'm sure at least one of our incoming transfers next year will return the favor  :D

Had this post come from a Linfielder, a Bearcat, even a LUTE at this point I would at least acknowlege it.

Come one man - break .500 or beat Redlands (whatever comes first) and we can talk. Everyone in the SCIAC beats Pamona and La Verne yearly, just like you guys.

As far as scheduling - I can't blame Redlands. They have a tough enough time with CLU and OXY, why add to that stress.

We here at CLU play the best in the NWC, that's why we don't schedule Whitworth(less).

:D :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D

OK that's my salty post of the week. It's kind of fun talking #*$% to someone other than GHC, 11, DOC, and the crew.
