SALEM, Va. – Fittingly, it was a home run that provided the difference for the Linfield College Wildcats, the newly crowned NCAA Division III softball champions.

The Wildcats capitalized on a timely weather delay, a gusty wind and a two-headed monster in the pitching circle to defeat Christopher Newport (Va.) 6-2 on Monday in the championship game of the NCAA Finals at Moyer Sports Complex. The team hoisted its second softball trophy in five years and celebrated the college's eighth team championship in school history.

Just a little something for you Wildcat fans to ponder, and shoot for. The Maryland Lacrosse program has been in existence for, I believe they said 80 years, without a losing season. They have a chance at the NCAA title tomorrow as an unseeded team in this years Championship Game. However, I will be cheering for the Virginia Cavs.

retagent,

Since I don't know anything about college lacrosse, I checked on the Maryland team you mentioned. They do have a great program, but the Terps have two non winning seasons since 1980. In 1980 and 1993, the Terps finished with a .500 record, so to equal Linfield's current streak, Maryland will need to keep winning until 2048.

I did hear of a college swimming team somewhere with a long consecutive winning seasons streak, but that's about it on the college level. On the professional level, I don't believe any team has been close to Linfield's record.

A little grammar lesson. "Non losing" does not mean the same as "winning".  However, both are records to be proud of. ( or since I'm giving grammar lessons, maybe I should have said - "of which to be proud." Which reminds me of an old joke, which I would be glad to reprise if I thought anyone hadn't heard it, or cared) ;D

To we Linfield Wildcat fans, even an inadvertant confusion of a "non-losing season streak" with a "winning season streak" is a perturbation up with which we will not put.  ;D
