Shades of Liz Heaston, does this mean that we might get an all-woman officiating crew for the Willamette-Linfield game on Oct. 1.   8-)

Pole vaulter's curse word costs team state track title
By Cameron Smith

When Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola High pole vaulter Evan Barr, who you can see pictured in a practice below, failed to clear his final height at the California state track and field meet, he was understandably disappointed. The miss cost him an individual state title and ensured he would finish in third place instead.

Yet, to say that he expressed that disappointment in an inappropriate way is a bit of an understatement. As it turns out, his reaction cost Barr another state title as well. After falling short of clearing the bar, Barr, whom you can see competing at the 2011 California Relays (not the state championship meet) in this video, let out a loud expletive. According to the Los Angeles Times, the curse word inspired judges to disqualify Barr from the event, with his points taken away from Loyola's team total.
That proved to be incredibly costly, as the adjusted points total cost Loyola a state track and field title. Instead, the Cubs finished second, with 32 points, behind Long Beach (Calif.) Poly High's 35 points.

"He uttered a profanity out of frustration, and the officials thought it was significant to disqualify him," Loyola track and field coach Mike Porterfield told the Times. "He apologized immediately after he said it. Apologies weren't enough to save Barr or his team from what has to go down as one of the more ignominious and costly setbacks in recent prep track and field history.

If nothing else, the star vaulter has provided a compelling case of the importance of minding ones manners in the heat of competition.
"You can't be profane in a competitive area," California state track and field rules interpreter Hal Harkness told the Times' Eric Sondheimer. "He made an unfortunate lapse in judgment."

Pat, just noticed on my Google Chrome bookmarks bar that Post Patterns now has it's own logo (a world globe?).  Not sure the significance but it's great.  Terrifically well run site.  Thanks again for keeping it up and running!

FarAwayCat

It's a fair question cludad, even though the NWC does not want to hear it again. #5 WAS starting for the University of Utah and broke himself up running into the end zone. When he got back, #1 NFL draft pick Alex Smith was in the chart ahead of him. He looked around and thought, "What Oregon football team has a few National Championship teams, a couple of TALL, FAST receivers , and the QUICKEST white football feet returning?" So....he went to LINFIELD.
And graduated with his mother, of course.

I will never ask again, that explains all(lucky you, must have been a blast). That qb from the last couple years...i seem to have forgot his name, but he was pretty darn good also ;D

cludad

I will say this, I liked smith but this guy had a much better arm.

cawcdad

Excellent video as usual 11. I'm glad I was lucky enough to witness a couple of the games.

The Wildcats always seem to have a pipeline to possible D1 transfers.  Any prospects this year?

Speaking of D1 transfers, CLU is looking for big-time efforts from three returning starters, including a D1 transfer, for the upcoming season.  How did these returning starters do against the Wildcats last season?

From the CLU website:

"Brent McNeil (OL)
The Oregon State transfer made an immediate impact as a junior earning D3Football.com All-American Third Team, All-West Region First Team and All-SCIAC First Team honors. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound lineman recorded 20 pancake blocks and allowed only three sacks in 254 attempts in 2010.

Expectations are high for the second-year Kingsman as he is only one of two offensive linemen to receive first team honors on both teams (Koby Parker, Hardin-Simmons).

Luis Villavicencio (CB)
Most teams last season avoided throwing in the direction of the 6-foot, 180 pound defensive back. He earned D3Football.com All-America Second Team, All-West Region First Team, and All-SCIAC First Team after transferring from Grossmont Junior College.

Villavicencio received Lindy's All-America First Team Defense honors after collecting 24 tackles in eight games last season. He led the 2010 squad with seven pass breakups and recorded one interception during his first season in a CLU uniform.

Rian Younker (DL)
The 6-foot, 270 pound nose tackle had a knack for finding the football recovering four fumbles and tying for the Division III lead in the regular season. Younker received All-West Region Second Team recording 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks while making nine starts in 2010.

Younker earned Lindy's All-America Second Team Defense honors and is one of eight starters likely to return to play for Cal Lutheran this upcoming season."

No idea about transfers yet. Perhaps some of those USC guys....
We've learned not to count the CLU players until they hatch. The coaching staff is certainly familiar with playing in the Cat Box so there goes that advantage.
