Watch for Wartburg sitings in the Hood River and Willamette Valley areas over the next few days.  Mrs. Warthog's cousin and her husband are visiting the area, based in part on the recommendation we gave them after our excursion to a Linfield  football game last fall.  This guy probably has a collection of orange Wartburg shirts that is second to none.  You will know it is them when you see a guy with gimpy, surgery scarred football knees wearing a Wartburg shirt .

When they're in Hood River, tell them to visit the Apple Valley country store (on the road up to Parkdale) and get a huckleberry milkshake.  They're worth every penny, and the best part of any family excursion around Mt. Hood.

HEDIN CONTINUES HIS WORK AT NEXT LEVEL...

http://www.arenafootball.com/news/shock-roll-third-straight-win

No big surprise!

From the teams press release:
"Spokane's defense flexed their muscle and got into the scoring act on the next drive. Rookie DL Erik Hedin stripped the ball from Voodoo FB Tommy Taggart that was recovered by Antwan Marsh who returned it 12-yards for a touchdown. Hedin, who was signed earlier this week and was making his first professional start, added a sack to his stats on the next drive when he dropped Voodoo QB D. Bryant for a 10-yard loss on fourth down. Three plays later, Rowley pushed his way into the endzone for the score."

And the hits keep coming. Thanks MacQuiz. Gave you plus karma.  8-)

...home field and no travel is huge in the playoffs. Especially for west coast teams.

Hopefully CLU will remember how difficult it is to play at Linfield when preparing for the opener. With the ability to host now in our grips, it makes beating Linfield in the opener a must in order to avoid having to go back in the first round. I think that would have been a HUGE advantage last year with the way Linfield was rolling into the playoffs. Going there is there and winning a playoff game against that type of team is a much more difficult challenge.

It also does not help that our troubles playing in the Northwest have been more than obvious in recent years. We have dropped games up there to all the teams we have played in the region (PLU, Willamette, and Linfield) and have made a bad habit of it at least once a season.

Gotta break the cycle and get a big one in the opener!

Wildcat fans will like this, especially after all the excitement at their softball team winning the national title earlier this year.

James Day's article on May 28, 2011 in the Statesman Journal entitled

Linfield's Vaughan piling up the titles

begins with the observation that:

"Linfield College has won three national championships since 2004, a football title that year and softball championships in 2007 and 2011. And coach Jackson Vaughan was involved in all three."

Props to the Wildcat women for pulling off a comeback win for the title.

What seemed most interesting, however, was Coach Vaughan's assessment about his women players:

"Vaughan started his coaching career in football but said the transition to softball — and coaching women athletes — was not that difficult.

'Many people feel that coaching female athletes is a lot different than male athletes and that the football guys must be tougher and work harder,' Vaughan said. 'I have found this to be far from the truth.

'We have several players on our softball team who easily outwork many of our football players.

'Last year one of my softball players broke her jaw, had it wired shut, sat out for a week an then started the rest of the season while losing 18 pounds because she could hardly eat anything.

'And there are some football guys who will sit out with a sprain or a jammed finger at times.' "

Conclusion:

It may be time for the Wildcats to consider letting some of their hard-working, mentally and physically tough women athletes, on their football team . . . . in some capacity (kicking?) . . .  to help set an example . . . .  ;)

Just dreaming again....I suppose if Colorado College were a fit with the NWC they would have tried to join before they went to the SCAC.
Now that that conference has broken up....
Just trying to get to 10 games, folks    :)

They used to play several SCIAC schools, but I don't see the SCIAC playing ten games (except for the one who gets knocked off by Linfield in the first round). :'(

Other sports are a problem for both leagues.

I thought they (CC) dropped football a couple years ago?

Some interesting news and notes from NWC schools not named Linfield or Willamette ...

Pacific: Former OSU linebacker Tavita Thompson hired as Boxers' d-line coach

Lewis & Clark: Pioneers bring in largest recruiting class ever

PLU: Future Lutes shine in small-school all-star game

I'm particularly encouraged by the developments at L&C.  With that incoming class, they'll have close to 90 guys on their roster next year.

Rather they upset you than us.

Personally done with patting them on the back because if they actually do get a defense and their Qb comes back strong.....

Speaking of strong QBs.  Maybe the Wildcats can interest former Michigan QB Robert "Tate" Forcier to come play for them.  Ex-Michigan QB Forcier wants to be a Warrior He was recruited out of high school by Florida, Penn State, Oregon, Arizona State and Washington State, and was a freshman starter at Michigan before being replaced.  He's now looking at Hawaii, San Jose State and Nevada, but if he goes to one of those schools, he would have to sit out a whole year.   Playing immediately at a strong D3 school might interest him, especially if things don't work out at a D1 school.
