Lemme kick the dead horse again...last year's St Thomas game was exciting as they come for this fan. A drive to tie on an away field of a higher ranked opponent with 17 seconds left, but lose on a fumble near the end zone in OT.

Not quite The Mishap In the Mud,  but exciting.

Wish I had seen live the 1984 NAIA Title Game at McMinnville High School. With 18 minutes left, defending champ Northwestern(IA) held a 22-0 lead, before Linfield exploded with 33 to take the victory. I believe this comeback might be the largest in 1AA, D2, D3, and NAIA championship game history.

I have a followup on that game.  I was operating the scoreboard and our  long-time timer was running the game clock (no play clock operator back in those days).  His niece was being married about that time and our timer's wife INSISTED that he go to the wedding.

As he left, with the intention to return as soon as possible, I took over the game clock operation.  And lo and behold, Linfield began to score!  As we began to close, I commented to those in the press box "If Ez (our timer) gets back, I'm not giving up this clock control!"  As luck (bad for Ez) would have it, on the way back to the game a young driver ran a stop sign and broad sided Ez's car.  He didn't make it back for the rest of the game, and the Cats won 33-22 if my old memory - today is my 88th birthday - is correct

Happy Birthday wildcater23, +1 K
Thanks for the story!

Steel Curtain,

I was at the game you speak of. And yes probably the greatest come back of all time.
The thing about the game that I will never forget, and shows why you can't second guess a Hall of fame Coach. As you said with 18 minutes to go and  down 22, Coach sends in the FG unit to kick? I wasn't the only one to shake my head, But Rutch knew the Cats needed something to get them going. The momentum shifted and the rest is history. 33-22

We can banter back and forth about this and that, the game will be settled on the field Saturday. But! I say we play the game at 3pm or 4pm. It would make things a little more normal.  Travel 3000 miles and then have to play the game at 9am PST?
IMHO

Go Cat!
One game at a Time!!
Leave no Doubt!!!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

Wildcater23 .....

Happy Birthday, and thanks for the memories that made the game special for you. It was also a special game for me, and I imagine a lot of Linfielders have positive thoughts about the journey to a successful outcome as well.

GO CATS
Lost in things I love most: the Universe, a good woman, and LINFIELD FOOTBALL

well your coach certainly doesnt think too highly of the matchup it drew for Saturday...calling it a "sham" and "ridiculous" on multiple occasions according to the d3 story on the homepage.  Sounds like a fan not a head coach.

Quit freakin whining and get your team ready...You are 93-and some low number in the past decade and you need built in excuses to travel East....?

Wheaton head coach Mike Swider knows good defenses.

"When you can play defense and special teams, you've got a shot to beat anybody."

Never mind the troll reference. Someone else can explain it to you.

I'll bite.  :D

LINFIELD will have Thanksgiving meal prepared by parents at a local church on Thursday, get to the airport 40 miles away, hopefully no more than a 5 1/2 flight, get settled into hotel / motel / Holiday Inn, lose three hours, practice at Wesley sometime Friday afternoon, team meetings, try to get to bed at 10PM (7 PST), and, like Coach Smith said, get up about 4:30 AM (1:30 AM PST) to prepare for peak performance. Cinch.

While I agree that Linfield is disadvantaged by the time zone difference (and argued on the Pool C board that allowances should be made for teams travelling east), I am pretty sure that you are overreacting.  Unless I read it wrong, Coach Smith was talking about getting the team up at 4:30 PST, (7:30 EST).  If he is getting them up at 4:30 EST, he is an idiot (and I do not believe he is).

You make sense Mr. Y ( my mom was born in Phoenix in 1919) but awakening at 7:30 AM, eating, shuttling, dressing up, taping up, warming up, takes more than an hour and 15 minutes.

I expect that it does, but if they get up at 7:30 wouldn't that leave 4 hours and 30 minutes before game time?

Yes, you guys are right.
I cannot covert English measurement to metric either.

Gig Harbor Cat

First of all Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
Safe travels to our Cats today.

Just read the Catdomealumni.com blog on the next game.  As usual 11 nailed it.  Has the Cats as a +7, and I think that +7 will come from either a pick 6 or a special teams score.  The Cats Special teams especially have made huge plays all year.
Alot of talk about the time change.  I see that as a non issue.  As soon as it was announced that we were going to doverville,  I am pretty sure that the Cat staff changed the practice, meal and get up times to east coast time.  They aren't going to adjust just after the flight.  The Cats will be ready to roll in Q1.
Considering what we did to the lewinsky and clark qb a couple of weeks ago, I am pretty sure we have a gameplan for their QB. The key for the boys will be to establish the run against their D Line.  Another difference maker is when our rotation, starts to take its toll against their line.  Close game 1st half, the boys will make their move in the second half.

Again, safe travels.  Cats by 7

Phone it in boys, its in the bank
