Ok, question for the PLU folks over here. (I don't think I've asked this before  ???)

Anyway, moved down to KC 3 years ago. Several new friends down here are Kansas State alums. They love to talk about EMAW. And by love, I mean, they drop it all the time. I've been teasing them about the fact that they stole their beloved phrase from Frosty Westering and PLU, usually giving them a hard time about the ethics of plagiarism.

SO here's the question. Anyone know the definitive history of EMAL. Is this original to you guys or is it a common, borrowed phrase. Please Note: I'm really hoping you can show me it's your phrase. As I'd love to be able to keep teasing them about having to steal slogans from DIII schools (they are mostly the type that is totally oblivious to the quality of DIII athletics and academics).

Thanks for any info you can provide

I don't really have proof or the definitive history.  But it's been nearly 20 years since I first enrolled at PLU and it had been around the program for years before that.  I know some other programs have borrowed it over the years, many of those coached by former PLU players.  It's not exactly trademarked or anything (even if Frosty did create it) - he'd love it see it reused.

Do you know about the Frosty/Kansas City Chiefs/Kansas State connection?  One of Frosty's three daughters (Stacey) married former Wildcat and Chief LB Gary Spani.  They live in KC and I think he still works with the Chiefs (or did for a long time anyway).  Their oldest daughter (so a grandaughter of Frosty) Shalin played hoops at K-State and married QB Collin Klein.  Maybe Collin started using it down that way?  Is it mostly tied to him and/or his era?  He is/was way into Frosty's philosophy, etc.

Could someone enlighten an outsider - what is EMAW?  I'm guessing it's an acronym, but I can't for the life of me figure out for what. :P

Well, I was curious and looked around a bit more.  It looks like it predates C. Klein and has maybe been around K-State for 20+ years as well. (There was one reference to it being painted in a press box and dated its use to the 90's.)  I kind of thought Frosty came up with it (several articles give him credit for it), but maybe he borrowed it via son-in-law Gary Spani?  Or some other connection?  I really don't know for sure.  I'd have to reach out to some guys who played for PLU in the 70's-80's.

Every Man A _____  (Lute, Wildcat, etc.).  Kind of a team first, no individual glory, do the right thing, serve others, type of thing.  It morphed and expanded a little over the years from a team slogan to describing an individual.  An EMAL is a player/person who embodies the ideals of the program.

Thanks.  That was certainly Bo Schembechler's philosophy, but never that phrase.  His highest accolade was that someone was a "Michigan Man".

I suppose by one phrase or another, that is the mantra of virtually every coach who ever lived! ;D

Someone just showed me the I in TEAM the other day.
If TEAM is written in capital block letters there can be an "i" in the A.

Actually, one of my buddies I give a hard time to was Colin's best man (or vice versa). I've met Colin on a couple occasions. Nice guy, down to earth, exactly what you'd expect. I was aware of the PLU to KSU connection, but just wondered if EMA_ was running down stream or upstream. Spani may indeed be the connection. Guess we may never know who started it.

thanks fellas!

Who are the LB's for the Wildcats next year as we lose our top 4?

I heard from a very well connected alumni that Linfield is replacing its field turf this summer and going away from the green color and using purple and cardinal.... Similar to what  Central Arkansas did... I'm not sure how that will look but it will definitely be unique!

If that cost more then it is a foolish move.

The 10 year life span of the current field is up and while the field still looks fantastic it's time for a new surface.  However the playing surface of the field is going to stay GREEN.  It might be pure green or the alternating shades of green (like the current configuration) but it will be green.  If there is a change maybe the end zones get some color but that would be the most radical change of the surface.

Thank goodness! I can't believe that anyone associated with the Linfield football program would even propose such a class-free stunt as a purple and cardinal field.  Such a move is inconsistent with 58 continuous years of the pride, dignity and class of our football program. Consistent excellence? Yes. Gimmicks? No.
