Yeah, having 9 D3 games is more important but I might be willing to sacrifice that time to time to have a shot at a marque in-state game that could be helpful with in-state/regional recruiting...especially after we beat them.  :)
yes, I forgot about Southern being good in recent years...oh well The Cru is still a great get

SOU had a pretty nice setting for football. Plus it was fun to hit Ashland and spend the day/night.... nice town. Looked for an NAIA Poll and couldn't see an updated one....wonder if SOU is still highly rated this season?

They are ranked #4 coming into this week:  http://www.naia.org/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=27900&ATCLID=210361099

Interestingly, they lost to Carroll who is still ranked below them

Someone just wants to get back at Craig Howard for tearing up his LINFIELD jacket before an OIT game.

(For those of you that have no a priori knowledge and that came across as obtuse - and you new parents)

Craig Howard was a tough as nails linebacker for the WILDCATS in the mid 70s. In his time as a coach for Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls he used a stunt of tearing up his LINFIELD letterman's jacket before a game against the 'CATS to inspire his team.

QuotePrior to SOU, Howard went 76-23 over his last eight years as head coach at Nease High School (2003-07) and Columbia High School (2008-10) in Florida. At Nease High School he led the squad to the state title game three times, winning a state championship in 2005. His star pupil during his run at Nease was Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Over his last three years at Columbia High School, Howard's teams broke 30 school records.

Howard also has a background in college coaching and served as the head coach at Oregon Tech from 1991-92, where he compiled an 8-13 record and was undefeated against Southern Oregon. He served as defensive coordinator for the Owls from 1978-81 and again from 1987-89 and was defensive coordinator at Portland State from 1982-83.

Howard grew up in Grants Pass and played football for the Cavemen and at Linfield College.

To my knowledge he has never been back to McMinnville. But, then, what do I know?

Who knows anything about the SOS list and when that algorithm gets legs!?
I guess that maybe conference play needs to get underway first...?

Craig Howard was a classmate of mine.  I invited him for an interview for a small radio station I was involved with a few years ago.  It was an excellent interview and Craig did not have any ill feelings towards Linfield.
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

Whitworth was impressive last night and a top 25, IMO.  They could really give Linfield some trouble later this year.  Should be a great match-up.

Any other Linfield old-timers remember this?

Utah's fake punt return against Oregon reminded me of a play when I was going to Linfield back in the early '80s: the Wildcat punt returner (Kent Bostick?) stood in his tracks and turned his head as though the ball was going well over him and he was going to let it go; the coverage team ran past him, he fielded the ball and took off for a big return.

Fun memory. I hadn't seen anything similar to that until last night.

Know I am politically incorrect, but it would be nice to have two games a year vs. WOU, SOU or EOU.    Most of us can not travel to Texas, Wisconsin, even Southern California, especially for a non-playoff game.    My bet is those teams could more than hold their own vs. the top D3 teams from California.

It would be two good games for Linfield and enjoyable in-state travel.     It would also save LC a ton dollars in travel costs.   Surely the athletic department can use that money for better purposes than airline tickets and hotels .

The only other non-conference series I would love to see is Linfield vs. Mount Union.    I can not believe in 18 years, we have never played them.   2 of the most storied football histories.

Also, why can't the NWC agree to all have one bye week in the 2nd or 3rd week of October?   All teams just can take that week off to rest the kids.   I don't get having a bye week in September???

Oh well.

"top D3 teams in California" = spit out my coffee laughing.

(That said, they appear better than PLU this year...yikes!)

SOU and WOU would walk through that conference. EOU would likely win it as well most years.

What's need is a little flexibility in how games are counted for playoff considerations (especially for teams out West). It shouldn't hurt at all if Linfield wants to play WOU.  Shouldn't hurt the NAIA or D2 team either.

Andy Jamison - Walla Walla Wildcat

From what I understand about D3 playoff considerations losses outside of D3 hurt much more than wins help.  Playing SOU, WOU, EOU, or CofI while being more economical than flying to SoCal or Texas don't really do much in the eyes of the playoff selection committee.  Beating them doesn't help strength of schedule while losing to them really hurts seeding.  As it is the only way we are going to host 3 rounds is by being undefeated and ranked higher than UMHB.  Until UWW stumbles the Semi's are going to be in Whitewater, guaranteed.

A regular season loss virtually guarantees being on the road beyond Round 1.

With that said I'd love to play SOU each year as that turned into a great rivalry.  It doesn't sound like they want to play us right now.

I've zero interest in playing the chumps from WOU... they have always been and most likely will always be a bunch of undisciplined, mouth breathers... dancing on the L after the beatdowns we put on them in 2004 and 2005... they are like a teachers strike - no class!
