Daddy ball is a scourge. I see it every weekend watching my daughter play AAU basketball.

Oh man, I hear ya. Some parent coaches in AAU-type competitive youth sports are WAY over the top. It can make for an ugly scene.

But the 'daddy ball' at Linfield (and PLU previously) is not even remotely similar. I was with you on calling out the eyeroll worthy hype, but I can't go much further. I don't see the comment as an attempt to gloss over some ugly 'scourge' of a situation.

I wonder if parents of other Linfield QB's or WR's would agree with you.

I see your point, but many of those parents would have their own bias about their little Johnny. I think the position coaches and non-involved players would be a better gauge of whether any inappropriate/pressured playing time or featuring decisions are being made.

Agree on personal bias regarding your own children. Here is a better question. Is Nathan Martinez a better QB than Wyatt Smith, and where on the depth chart would he be if he played for Linfield?

From what I saw, they're completely different players.  The offenses are different enough that I'm not even sure they play the same position, if that makes sense.  I'm not sure Martinez would work better than Smith in Linfield's offense and I'm not sure Smith would work better than Martinez in Redlands' offense.

He would be where Mrs. Smith puts him.

I have no idea.

But on a related note, I overlapped with Frosty's grandson for a few years at PLU. There was a little bit of grumbling around the edges entering his soph year that he was going to start whether he was the best option or not. But he was darn good and we could all tell he was the best option, so it was kind of moot (especially into his jr and sr years).

They are having a hard time finding refs for sports all across the nation.... mainly because of unruly parents that go ballistic .....

My friend got yellow carded at his daughter's soccer game.   He had to move behind one of the goals.

L&C, yes.
Hyping the kids: yet to be seen.
desertcat1 has a point in that during THE STREAK there have been 5 coaches. Paul Durham had his son, Terry, at Qb, Ad Rutschman's his sons Don and Ron playing for him,  Ed Langsdorf his son Danny at Qb, and now the Smiths.
Tradition and legacy.

64 years and counting that's daddy ball at LINFIELD.  8-)

Chad Johnson was his name, right?  He was definitely a stud for the Lutes!

I think it refs need to be better paid, then others would join the profession and there would be less bickering

I do think our national ranking is too low.

I have tons of respect for Linfield, and maybe they're peaking now (ideal), but the only ranked opponent they have played is #23 Redlands, and it was a loss.  I am betting that a majority of pollsters don't have the time or desire to do a deep-dive into each time, so they're voting based on the body of work that is easily accessible to them.

Of course, you are right.    The pollsters have the votes; I can't vote, but I have seen them improve big time this year.    But first, we need 3 more wins.

Likely the Cats are perhaps a better team than the pollsters believe but that is fine with me...win the next three and then become the underdogs in the playoffs and run the table!

Underdogs on the road? The NWC has done it before.
Perhaps run the table next year

Linfield fans,
1.   Our scheduling the last 2 years leaves a lot to be desired.
2.   Now we find out how much LC has improved since the Redlands game.   Will be a tough game.    If the Cats are good as I think, we can win.

Defense could be the difference.    I know Whitworth's defense will be as tough as Redlands.

I love the Pine Bowl, one of my very favorite settings.     But, alas, have a conflict and can't get there this year.   Will have to watch it on the internet.    (always a challenge in Div 3).

Time to even the score with the Rats from last year.  If the Cats play up to their potential next Saturday, the Rats will find holding onto their Championship hardware will be pretty tough.  This has all the makings of a game where whoever has the ball last wins!  Go Cats....way to rebound from the Redlands loss!
