An English friend down in here Aus just highlighted this guy to me.  Joseph Medicine Crow was the last Plains Indian war chief and a genuine Crow bad a$$ in WWII, apparently.  He was also awarded a Bronze Star in WWII in addition to the achievements below.

I post it here because when I looked him up on Wikipedia to read a little more I saw that he's also a Linfield grad.  So I formally take back everything I have said about Linfield being full of creampuffs.  You've had at least one hard nut.  ;)

I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Joseph Medicine Crow back in 2008 when I first began participating in the Little Big Horn annual activities, which include (among many other various events for that anniversary weekend) a memorial service honoring participants on both sides, the annual reenactment of the battle, an annual academic conference, which I have been a speaker at also.  I saw him every year thereafter until, of course, the year of his death.  He and his son Ron always remembered me.  He was actually much more than the "B.A." you describe him as.  He was a very nice, kind, and sincere gentleman and he proudly (and rightly so) supported  promoted and shared his rich tribal history and culture as well as that of the various Indian nations, including discussing the "wrongs" perpetrated against them by the U.S. Government in the past. And even though he acknowledged the latter, he always promoted the idea of unity despite diversity among all people in our country today.  I am very glad to have met this remarkable man and, of course, humbly honored that he and his son remembered me every year.  Thanks for your post.

You're lucky to have met him.  I would have enjoyed the same.

I saw somewhere in my readings that his grandfather was a Custer scout at Little Big Horn and that Medicine Crow was the last living person to have heard the events of and around the battle relayed first hand.  Apparently he wrote a notable book on the battle.  It's crazy to think how far away and yet how close we are to major historical events.  You spent time talking to a man who had spent much time talking to another man who had been at the actual Last Stand and would have been a daily acquaintance of some of the biggest names in American folk lore.  Kevin Bacon, eat your heart out.

Charlie Brown to Lucy: "if your facts are so little known, how do YOU know them?"
