Oxy dropped football because they have a huge endowment, money was not the reason they carried football the last 20 years. School wanted that type of male student off the campus. Whittier dropped football for financial reasons, taking the whole school in a different direction, toward the toilet if you ask me. They sold off assets, had land for sale, sold the Presidents Residence, all to raise cash. I can see Whittier moving towards a version of National University model to survive. The school needs major capital improvements. Word on street is they have spoken to city of Whittier about consolidation and what zoning the city is willing to grant.

Thank you, Old Dog - I appreciate knowing more about the circumstances of Occidental and Whittier dropping football. From what I know from over 40 years of being around the Northwest Conference, I don't anticipate any of the schools making a similar move. I'll never say never, but it's hard to see the circumstances that would lead any of the current schools to eliminate the sport.

Lewis & Clark is likely the most "progressive" of the NWC schools; in 2005 it cut short its season and did study of whether its football program warranted continuation. Obviously, L&C's conclusion was that it did and it has had several competitive seasons since. Even Puget Sound, for all its recent struggles, had a winning record as recently as 2019. As much as I want the Wildcats to win, I also want the conference to be competitive across the board.

CatJumper, thanks for the feedback...glad to hear it.

Its so ironic to me, these schools in So Cal want the diversity of which football attracts, but not that type of male, towards the end of Oxy's run the President had his clamps on the football team. This was a major premise of current and former players at Oxy players that I know. Most of these comment were from black players.

Wow!   The Oxy school leaders were racist?    Stunning and deplorable.

GT,

According to the couple black players I know it was not racism, it was the admin (AD, Pres, Board and others) did not like FB Players. They were ostracized on campus and in their frat because they were FB players, Security would follow groups of FB players walking around campus too, put the clamps down on their housing,  it was clear they were not well liked. They challenged admin on their true desire for diversity when they heard FB might be dropped the first time. It was clear to them there was a certain type of minority they wanted, masculine males of any race were doomed.
They regret going there, not their teammates. They said the football team did not relate to many kids they were on campus and stayed to themselves a lot.

I'm thinking Linfield and Whitworth will be the top 2 in the conference but L&C is a DarkHorse.

Whitworth is totally woke and would not let Shapiro speak at the student Union.  They recruited my son heavily, but it was not the right fit.

Occidental football was bigger than Andy Collins.

D O.C.

He was the tail end of the program. He set records. He won titles. He earned LINFIELD's respect.
