PDXpio ... I've heard the A.D. there is a caretaker and not much more. If they're having turnover in all sports, time for some major administrative changes.

We'll see what happens...apparently the school presidents are none too happy and a conference call is scheduled with all of the school presidents this week...  :o

11,

You and I almost always see eye-to-eye. But on this L&C thing, I have to disagree with you. Look closer at who Trinity Bible plays. The team they beat doesn't have more than 35 players either. If L&C was in the UMAC, they'd probably be in decent shape to play out the season. But playing the NWC schedule with numbers that low is suicide. Pdawg mentions 7 linemen. I've heard rumors that the Pio's only have 4 guys who have ever played on the o-line. According to the same rumor, they were trying to decide if one kid should rotate in at wide receiver or if they needed him to start at tackle. Against Whitworth, Linfield, PLU, Willamette, and UPS...are you kidding me?!  That's an injury waiting to happen, and they don't have the numbers to have any true 'back-ups'. The Oxy game won't be much better, but the other three games on their schedule are at least reasonable.

I don't think anyone is real pleased with the Pio decision, even those who made it. But if you look from a different perspective, you might see how those in charge of student-athletes' safety felt it was a decision that had to be made. At least this way (with the commissioned study) L&C will either do the things it needs to do to get the program back in shape...or they'll drop it.  The other conference teams will be just fine. This isn't really about them.

Well, if they're only going to play SCIAC teams maybe we can loan them out for the year...10 more guys and they could challenge for the conference championship! ;D

DT48,

Just like PLU last Saturday right?

WOUfan, I like this one:

Shouldn't the administration have given him a head's up on how bad it is, and the lack of commitment from the administration?

So during the interview with Coach V. the 'administration' should have told him, "if you want to take the job, all we can say is 'Good Luck'. We aren't committed to supporting you one bit."?

I see what you are saying, but that line cracked me up. Yeah, I feel bad for Coach V. and I think the problems have little to do with him personally (maybe some, but not that much). But he came into the situation with his eyes open. If he didn't think it was this bad, he didn't do his homework.

Downtown, only one 1 of the 3 games on L&C's schedule that I've labeled 'reasonable' is against a SCIAC team.

RFB,

I'm surprised PLU put up as many points as they did with only 3 returning starters on offense.  Just be glad that L&C isn't playing your Dawgs this year.  I wouldn't want all 34 of their players to run wild on UofR like they did a few years back.   ;D

Too bad the SCIAC keeps skirting Linfield.  I hear that Redlands stop returning calls from the 'Catdome.   ;)

Dee,

I understand where you're coming from but I still can't believe that they left the NWC hanging like this.

George Thompson

Two years ago, I did write to every NWC President asking that they allow E. Oregon to join the NWC.    Obviously I have no clout.

The only reason I advocate admitting two or three state schools is because it is a logical answer to the problem of a very small league.    I will be surprised if Pacific, George Fox or Albertson starts football, especially after the L&C fiasco.

For all the reasons I stated earlier the status quo is a servious financial problem.     But, it is much more interesting to have more local rivalries.

Maybe if everyone who loves the NWC football would wirte one or two ADs and College Presidents, they might listen.

Do the public universities in the Pac-10 make Stanford lower their academic standards?     No.

Somehow, someway, let's find 2-3 more football members for the NWC.

GO CATS! GO!

RFB...

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while, and besides they had to get a PLU guy to coach em' before they could get the job done, they were 0'fer before Saturday.

pdxpio

downtown48, any specifics on what will discussed (besides L&C stiffing everyone in the leauge) on that call?  keep us posted on what is said.

interesting post on the top of the page, i voted no.  interested to see that 3 people had voted yes (as of 7pm monday) but im not sure what they are thinking.  its my guess that the program goes away for at least 3 years while a major facelift is performed.  even then, i can only imagine the pios playing jv squads and/or smaller jucos maybe varsity play begins 5 years from today *or* the program goes the way of the dodo.

it just pisses me off so much that the athletic department could let the program sink so freaking low.  this whole thing didnt happen overnight and the bleeding should have been stopped a long time ago.  i have been speaking with some alums (who have been speaking with others) so we are trying to rally everyone to show up for the two home games.  i know the majority (well, maybe all) of you arent pio fans, but, if you could make a game that would be great.

"safety concerns" i still cant get over that, its pathetic and embarassing.

RFB

DT48,

Maybe PLU should have hired Scott Squires instead of Frosty Jr. They might have been 1-0 instead of 0-1.

WC11,

Keep coming with the laughable material, I need a good chuckle. Just make sure you put some extra air in your double-green dot alumni helmet, I don't want the inflated ego to possibly burst.

It's a good thought RFB, but I heard it came down to Squires not having the right kind of facial hair  ;D

I'm just a guy who's happy his squirrels know where their nuts are...

George....if the locals such as EOU, WOU and SOU want to take their programs to d3, I'm sure that they will find plenty of takers for a nonconference game....not just Linfield or Willamette.

But they are not going to get into the NWC.  The charter of the conference specifies conference is for private schools.  That isn't going to change because somebody wants to turn back the clock.  We already have plenty of local rivalries with the NWC anyway.  SOU and EOU are not "local rivals"....both are longer trips to make than PLU and UPS.    Playing games against UWSP, the SCIAC or other d3 teams offer the team to travel to other parts of the country....besides the obvious reason for playing schools that have a similar philosophy.

As far as getting other schools into the NWC football scene, Colorado College is a possibility as a provisional.     George Fox seems unlikely to restart football before the end of the decade (they are committed to a significant land purchase of the Newberg Hospital).    Albertson College of Idaho has tabled everything on football.

twoducks

For the NWC guys just a couple notes on some PLU kids.  The kids were very well disciplined and had an obvious team mentality in that they were behind each other good or bad.  The fans, were very good and a surprising amount made the trip.  #2 Kurt VanSelus played a very good game and was all over the field, this kid flat out played ball and deserves kudos from what I saw of him. Also #97 Andrew Eisentrout played well and had a couple good hits and was very active on the D line. The program represented itself very well and I wish them the best in the NWC food chain.
