What in the heck is so "uncatlike" to be talking about bands and music, give me a break, is this some exclusive club I'm in that objects to pepbands at a football game? Sorry pdawg but we're talking Linfield football here and the pep band is part of the deal....just like the cheerleaders, the consession stand, student ushers and everybody else that contributes. It's all part of the whole. Don't trash the pepband discussion. Sure, I'd rather be talking about how we won the Stagg, but it didn't happen. This is a fan board and we can talk about what ever we want to. So you're telling me they kicked the pep band out because they needed the money? That's idiotic. Most people think the band contributes to the atmosphere and if the band is good, it helps the team by pumping up the crowd. I also happen to know from talking to athletes that if the band is good, loud and have it going.... they have told me it pumps them up and gets them ready to play. So don't trash the band discussion.

Now tell us about the recruits you've brought up, we'd like to know that also...just don't trash the band.

PS...what do you have against live music?

RedandPurple...most if not all pep bands in high school are under the leadership/direction of the band teacher. In college there may be a graduate student advisor in charge which makes good sense because it is good real world training, but most college pepbands are directed by the band/orchestra music professor.

PEP BAND: A student-run musical organization that helps create school spirit and enthusiasm at sporting events.

A few years ago I attended an High School football game. Through a faculty connection the Pep Band from the local University came and played. It was phenomenal! The place was rocking! The high school football players loved having a "Big Time" band at their game and members of the High School Band were made aware that they could actually go on to the "next level" in what they were good at. The Pep Band even jammed with the opposing team's band. It was a fun experience for everyone.

What a blast it would be for high schools within the McMinnville area to have a Linfield College Pep Band visit and play with them on a Friday night. Talk about a recruiting tool!

pdawg,

Come on now join the BANDwagon.  You have to agree the Game Day experience at the  Catdome will be far better if we all get together and decide once and for all that we are going to have a good band at the Catdome.
If you simply decide we're going to do it and then everyone work towards a solution it can happen!  They can sit on the track next to the bleachers, they can sit in the bleachers, we can construct temporary shelter over the band if need be, there are all kinds of solutions if everyone just decides it going to be done.  How many bowl games did you see over the holidays where the bands were in oncovered bleachers playing there hearts out in inclement weather? Many.....Did you watch the Rose parade where every band was marching and playing in the rain???First we decide we're gonna make it happen without taking away seats from the covered grandstand.....then we say we're gonna get a band formed and playing for the benefits of a great Game Day experience at the Catdome!  Nothing can ever be accomplished in this world if we keep trying to find excuses as to why it is too difficult.  Join us now and help us Bring Back A Good Band to the Catdome for the benefit of all.

Now what about those recruits for next year.....what's the inside scoop?

I agree...this is Oregon, bands play in the rain but would it be fair to the kids involved. I guess you'd have to ask them, right???

I love music and I love bands, all kinds of bands. To be honest, I am not much of a half-time type guy. I prefer to watch the athletes play. The canned music and the system that delivered the music really sucked this past season. I, too, am hoping for an improvement in the music just like the rest of the CAT poster band. And, I am not against anyone or any group working to make the game environment more inviting and fun.  The Linfield experience is much more than just football.

And, I can tell you this, I'll take a stud running back over a stud band any day. I know all this band talk is filling in between schedule and recruiting talk and banter.  I just am not sure that you'll find any talk about bands over on the OAC board.

Perhaps, the band is why Mr. Smith so graciously donated $1 million to the athletic program. Perhaps, there's a chance we can use some of those funds to build a band stand and pay the expenses for those high school bands to visit our campus. Think about it... no band plays for free. Any band will have expenses and most high school band programs operate on a very minimal budget (if they are lucky enough to have a band). It takes gas to power a bus, a driver to drive it, food to power the kids and a supervisor to be responsible for the students. So I guess, a band fund would certainly help!

Wildcat'64

pdawg,

Mr. Smiths' funds were not designated for the music program but as you know were to be used to improve the athletic facilities for the student/athletes. We should all be very thankful and appreciative for his generosity to the college.

This is an entirely different subject matter.  I give money to athletics, I gave money to the new music building (with the band rehearsal hall) and I will give money to any fund that is established to fund high school bands to entertain at half time or a quality Pep Band....the Catdome has a First Class football team and they deserve the very best support cast and not a scratchy Linfield fight song played on a PA system.

The alums have just invested many dollars in upgrading our music program on campus by the building a new facility for our students.  Now is the time to pull together, use those assets to their maximum and create a better Game Day environment in the Catdome.

Not one dollar from the athletic department should go to support this initiative.  If we all pull together, instead of looking for reasons as to why it is to difficult, we can accomplish our goals and objectives.  The 2006 team, the attendees at the games, the Linfield image, the entire athletic program, the long term recruiting for students to come to Linfield all will be beneficiaries if we do it right.
I will do my part by financially supporting any effort to improve the Game Day experience at the Catdome.  Please join me and the others who want to do the same.

Bring Back A (Good) Band

LEAVE NO DOUBT

pdawg,

I thing it's very 'Catlike to discuss something that supports the whole Linfield football experience, which a pep band would; and until someone comes up with solid info about recruits, this is a positive discussion.

Speaking of the OAC, if you read their board before the Stagg Bowl, you might have noticed that other posters were giving the MUC posters a hard time for being so obsessed with which uniforms the players were going to be wearing.
Two words:  THE STREAK

Pdawg
have you been in contact with any of these high school marching bands? You seem certain about them not playing for free. Is this why the college won't look into it.

I lost most every one else on this board would like to see the Pep band back. One that would do justice to the cats on the feild and be a credit to the music dept.

BING BACK THE (GOOD) BAND :)

7 pages of pep? Perhaps these conversations would still have taken place if LINFIELD were not knocked out of the playoffs and made another Stagg Bowl appearance but that may be pdawg's slant.

I did not even notice (OK, only 2 games) the rag tag corner of the stands was crammed with paying fans and the instruments have been retired.  I have a habit of leaving at half time to 'stretch my legs'.

I am concerned about NEVER being caught without an All-NWC running back or a tight end again, but by all means, the Milo Wold Pep Band would have a place.

'Cats Fa Natic

Not to break the bring-back-the-band momentum, but has anyone heard any initial whisperings of potential recruits/transfers?

I'm talking football here, not band transfers...
{Clever sign-off goes here.}

...and you might ask that question because it was two years ago about this time when Wildcat 11 hinted that Brett Elliott had applied to LINFIELD.

>>>>This of course, is nonsense.   Nobody on this board can *decide* that we are going to have a good band...if any.

It won't happen with a bunch of blathering e-mails.  Somebody is going to recruit the band.   '64, why don't you take a week and travel here to talk to Scott Carnahan, the music people, potential musicians, etc.?   Sounds to me that writing an e-mail is cheap....action is another thing.

If you simply decide we're going to do it and then everyone work towards a solution it can happen!

>>>Easy for you to say since you're in Alaska  ;D

>>>>>Sorry, it just isn't that big of an issue for me.   If it happens, fine.  But I was just fine with the canned music this year.   Football games are not about cheerleaders and listening to another bad version of "Louie, Louie".   It's the game!

Now what about those recruits for next year.....what's the inside scoop?

This little nugget appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune after Doug Flutie converted the first NFL drop kick in 60 years.  I thought you NWCers would like to see it:

According to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., the last drop kick in a college game came on Sept. 28, 1957. Tommy Gilmer of Pacific Lutheran drop-kicked an extra point, providing the winning margin in a 7-6 victory over the University of Puget Sound.

Like you, I support the Wildcats football program in many ways, including financially. Like you, I would support anything that improves the quality of the overall football program and the overall Linfield experience. However, I choose to put my personal time and efforts towards the team, the players and the game. I would prefer to play football over music, just a personal preference. If it could happen, I would love to have quality live music supporting our players, cheerleaders and fans. However, I have been involved with too many internal discussions relating to the finances involved and therefore seem to be a realist rather than a dreamer when it comes to the pep band or a marching band. Hey, I'll sign a petition or donate to a fund in support of good music at our games, but I will always go to a football game for the enjoyment of the game itself. Like it has already been said, I will take a running back over a flute player any day.

pdawg.....you've nailed it.

The game comes first for me.   If I'm doing a budget for Linfield football and I was given a choice between spending $1000 on a band or spending $1000 on an assistant coach or two to travel to Hardin-Simmons next September, I'm choosing the assistant coach route.   All this stuff about building shelters in the south endzone (that would have to be removed...unless Linfield drops track and field as a sport) and the pie in the sky dreams of a band that will challenge Grambling and doing it all on the internet....good grief.  I live on a budget just like anyone else.  If I am given a choice to contribute $200 to football or $200 that will get a band.....gee, I'll pick football.

Others may not share my priorities.  That is good I suppose, since it takes all types to move things.  But I'll leave it to them to get "action" going.  In the meantime, I'll have to be amused by the thought it is going to happen if people start e-mailing.   In the old days, letter writing campaign had some legitimacy because at the minimum, somebody had to buy a postage stamp.  With e-mail, activists don't even have to invest in a stamp.
