OK OK Mrs. Coco.....I was trying to be more funny than anything else with the spirit club thing.  I guess the joke wasn't as obvious as I thought.  I'm glad you recognize that I'm not a crabbypants...but this band thing has taken on more importance than football itself on this board.....due to the absolute boredom of the off season.   I'm not buying the assumption that supporting Linfield football means supporting a pep band.   They are separate topics.

Bluenote....describing the people in some of the recent Linfield bands as musicians is kind of generous, don't you think?.  But then again, anyone can be a musician....I mean, I can do a very tight  "On Wisconsin" with a sheet of waxpaper and a comb.   ::)

Swede...the assumption that all 40 of those people want to buy general admission tickets is bold and probably untrue.  If someone wants to sit undercover in the rain and are willing to buy their ticket on a season long basis, the GA assumption doesn't fly.   I'll wager that the athletic department would rather have that money in the budget and have happy long term season ticket holders than to placate the band that in the past, hasn't been all that.  Maybe Bluenote's new found friend can fix it.   I remain skeptical.

Beancounter -

Assuming the NEW Band takes up 40 seats and assuming Swedes' math is correct and the net financial impact on the athletic budget might be $800 and assuming the NEW Band practices and performs in the fine Linfield tradition of years' past Linfield bands and assuming the NEW Band committee could raise the $800 to contribute to the athletic department for the "net" loss of revenue---could we then convince you join the BANDwagon for the good of the cause and the good of rest of the 4,500 guests at the Catdome on any given Saturday in the fall of 2006????

I think most of us would like to find a way to have you join us in this effort to create a better environment on Game Day at the Catdome.

Wildcat '64.....as I pointed out, Swede's analysis is loaded with assumptions....and even an $800 loss to the athletic department isn't worth it to me.   That money sends an extra assistant coach on the Hardin Simmons trip.

People on this list are not reading the wise words of Downtown on this issue.    There is a lack of interest at Linfield College in having a good band as it stands now.   This BANDwagon bit is nothing more than a mutual feel good society until someone gets their boots on the ground and finds musicians better than my waxpaper and comb and Downtown's spoons.    I applaud Bluenote for his efforts because he is doing more than just squawking in contacting Ms. Quick....but her response clearly indicated problems.    E-mails to Jeb Bladine at the News Register aren't going to solve them.

Until those problems are resolved, my support for or against it is pretty irrelevant (and I sure as heck don't care enough about it to take time out of my busy season for it).    Things will be done by people who care about it more than I do.   My Linfield football game day was not effected a single bit by the canned music from the computer in the pressbox.    I'm amused more than anything by this idea that a band is somehow crucial.   I didn't notice a band back at St. John's two years ago....and it didn't cause Blake Elliott to run any slower against the Wildcats.   So I don't get all these connections about a band and football.

I agree with you. Returning a Pep Band to Maxwell Field on game is going to happen by those other than yourself. That's okay. Instead of waiting "unti those problems are resolved..." some  are trying to get them resovled.

If having a pep band is of no interest to you. Then quit posting about it. Just don't respond to this or any other postings about the band. Limit your posts to the game of football.

Speaking of season tickets for the Catdome... anyone know when they go on sale?

This is a football board, not a band board.    The moment that the band topic leaves the football board will be the time it all ends.

Nice try

Dr. Sparky

Unlike Scrooge Beancounter, I think the gameday atmosphere is a legitimate topic. Hell, how many megabytes are wasted during the season on drivel about tailgating? I could give a rat's ass about that, but I don't complain about it. So, Scrooge, just skip this post.

OK, so if numbers are the problem, suggestions have been made on this board to help with that. The idea of guest high school bands coming to play is a good one. The Linfield pep band members could join them as well. This accomplishes several goals:

1. Gets a band at the game;
2. Gives the Linfield pep band a chance to play;
3. Would be a great recruitment tool for Linfield admissions; And if some of those HS kids ended up Wildcats they might be more inclined to play in the pep band.

Two years ago when Linfield played at Lewis and Clark they had a high school pep band playing and it was great. If dimwits like Lewis and Clark can make it happen, why can't Linfield?

And, yes, Beancounter, I know what you're going to say: Lewis and Clark had plenty of extra seats. So, I'll beat you to the punch, Scrooge.

As for "playing in the rain", how many games did it actually rain last year? Even on days it was supposed to it held off, didn't it? I think if we can get them in the bleachers to start that would be a good step.

Finally, last season when speaking to a two fellow alums and season ticketholders about the monster Powerball jackpot they said if they won they'd use the winnings to purchase the seats in the grandstands to BRING BACK THE BAND. I think the sentiment about the band extends beyond this board.

I agree with you. Perhaps some fans missed the live music,  but didn't think about finding out why it was replaced. Not that Linfield owes me (us) an explanation, they don't.It's part of the whole college game day experience. No one ever posted that having a pep band will improve the quality of play of a football team.

I count it a priviledge to support the school and it's athletic teams. I have supported them in the past and will continue to do so. Band or no Band...GO CATS!

Scrooge...me???   Nah, that can't be..... ;D.  So now everyone has fallen to the idea that if you disagree with someone on this largely uninfluential board, you had better shutup.....oh dear!!!

For all the talk, I really wonder how many of you are going to follow Bluenote and "do something" besides e-mail and bellyache?    None of this banter inspires a single musician to attend practice, buy new sheet music or much else.  A good band is great...but a bad band will start discussions next January, bring back "game commander" (the software for the canned music).

Sparky...you are right.   FWIW (which is very little), the HS idea is very good, not for the idea of having a band, but for recruiting.  One cannot underestimate the power of getting HS kids onto a college campus for anything.....a speech tournament, a music festival, sports camps to name a few.    All that is good for the College.

The last time it rained real hard was the JV vs Alumni football game the first Saturday in November...the day Lewis and Clark was scheduled.    We had no rain during home games in 2004.

Look it doesnt matter if it did or didnt hot rain in pervious seasons. Its oregon. It rains all the time. It is bad for instruments, especilly woodwinds to get wet. That is why we need the cover, Thus we need to be seated in a covered area. Now at the begining of this year I suggested to the AD to set up a tent for us to play under. The music department gave them a solution to their "Stadium Issues" and they didnt bite.

I'm not opposed to having High School bands come and play with us. In fac,t next year I'm going to be more on top of that. I don't however, think they should replace Linfield students completely. I have a few very dedicated students who want to play. Hopefully these people will be able to spread the enthusiasum. Until then I will work with what I got.

Yes the pep band has problems, but that is because there hasn't been anyone to make it into something better than 15 members. I hope I can be the person to make it something awesome, but I can't do so by myself. I need the help from the music, and athletic departments.  I will do everything I can to make sure that next year will be better.

Abby,

You have a great attitude and a positive "can do Wildcat spirit".....without students such as you, we never would have had 50 straight winning seasons.  There were a number of years when we didn't have the most talented athletes on the field but the student/athletes pulled together to make the best Team on the field.

I think that is a very creative idea to put up a tent for the band to cover them in case of rain.  The Top Cat Club and the Bookstore have tents so perhaps there is a way to get one additional for the Band.

A combination between a good Pep Band and a Visiting High School Band probably would be a good deal.  More kids get exposed to Linfield and then when some of those kids come to college they will already be exposed to the Pep Band and perhaps want to participate.

Keep up the good work and the positive attitude and I suspect you can look forward to some assistance from some of the alums.

I thought it was great to see Wildcat#3, as a recent player, on the Board a few days ago, in strong support of your efforts to Bring Back The Band.....

Very sad.... unless I missed something, The Vegas bowl is not on T.V. Guess we have to wait for the Hula Bowl to see Brett.
I hope Brett has a great day!

Beancounter, Thanks for your input, It gives me even more energy to make it happen! this is something I feel very strong about.8 months and we will have the answer! ;D

Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

Good job, Abby! I agree with Wildcat '64 that some of the alums will help you. The tent idea seems do-able.

There's some old proverb about those who say it can't be done should get out of the way of those who are doing it.
