There's an entertaining article written by Brett Elliott today on his slog page.

I love his comment concerning his performance in the Hula Bowl.

Thanks Redandpurple, nice article by Brett, as I came back to this site I had a pop up.....wouldn't you know it! Best of luck to he and casey. seems he felt like most of" us "about Davies and his comments! He clearly outplayed the D1 guy and gets put down.  ???
any news on spring work-outs?
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!

That may work for offense but not so much on the defensive side of the ball.  Reactions and coverages are choreographed ahead for the most part but a player needs to be able to think on his feet, read offenses and anticipate.  Especially as the year rolls into post play and offenses may start to throw different formations and plays that may have been held back during the season and are hard to scout and prepare for.  I remember when my 7 year old son's youth football coaches sat the boys down the night before the first day of school and told them to study and do their homework because there was no such thing as a dumb football player!  I tend to believe that for the most part.

I was under a bit of a time crunch yesterday and didn't say that well.  I didn't mean to imply you don't need to be smart to play football.  That's why I said you learned it ahead of time and then go out and DO it. It's not that you don't have to be smart, it's just that when you're out there, your instincts take over. Like when you're about to be in a car accident and everything you've ever learned about driving just suddenly washes over you so you're able to get out of it.

I think in Young's case, he's probably not the brightest bulb in the box. But he has good instincts on the field and he's a play maker.  I think he's probably one of those kids who has to study and study and study to get an A versus a kid who barely listens in class, never studies, and still gets them.  They both get the A, just different ways of getting there.

I agee totally with you.  Your comment about ,"instincts taking over," and mine about, "thinking on your feet and anticipation,' are different ways of saying the same thing.  Those qualities can be more obvious on the defensive side of the ball.  We have all seen players with, "a nose for the ball."  They are the impact players and the ones you remember!!!!  As for Young having to study and study to get ,"A's,"  maybe that's what he has to do to get , "C's!      ;) ;) ;D ;D!"

Quotesome guy named Jake Cutler might be picked ahead of him in the draft, I would have been pretty surprised. As it turns out, that might in fact happen. I guess we'll see.
Foss guy....I just know you don't believe that wholeheartedly because we are aware that billion dollar business has tracked these kids since 14 or so and look at the whole package of developement, not one game.

That is a nice article.  I didn't get any pop-ups, though. My trusty pop-up blocker stopped 'em.  What version of Internet Explorer do you use?  The latest version has a built-in blocker that stops most of them.  (I can't help but notice that ALL the pop-ups on MSN and any site owned by Paul Allen--e.g., the Seahawks' website) seem to work just fine even with the pop-up blocker turned on.)

{Clever sign-off goes here.}

What kind of grades did he pull?  Was it really Cs?  I thought he was better than that.

If you're a defensive fan, did you watch Lofa Tatupu play this year?  Now there's a kid who has a nose for the ball.

No, I was joking about the "C's."  Don't have any idea.  I am a huge defensive fan.  "Offense wins games but defense wins championships!"  Truer words were never spoken!!

DenS, you're right, I didn't believe Vince Young was going to necessarily be the #1 or #2 draft pick, even during that point in time a few weeks back when he was receiving all the hype after the national championship game. I still thought guys like Reggie Bush, Matt Lienhart, and maybe even a couple other guys, could be drafted ahead of him due to what they had done over their career. I can say, however, I had no idea some guy named Jay (not Jake, like I wrote before - see how little I knew about this guy?) Cutler from Vanderbilt might potentially be drafted ahead of him. I never saw that one coming. In a way, this draft talk depresses me because of Brett's NFL combine snub.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Tuxguy: Don't worry about what Bob Davie might have said about Elliott since no NFL team will be influenced by it. During my life I have been present in an NFL team's "war room" during the entire draft for 24 years, and not once did I hear any person in the "war room" attempt to establish or support a position on a prospect by referring to what any TV commentator had to say about the prospect - NOT ONCE.

What??? You mean guys like Terry Bradshaw or Dan Fouts don't influence you NFL scouts?  But... but he's a former QB!   :o

Okay, all kidding aside, what NFL team was that you were sitting in on?  And were you just visiting or are you an employee?
