Unless expressly noted to the contrary, 40 times are hand timed.

Thanks for the info, Frank.  I know there are a few teams in the WIAC that always time with the laser.  The players all have higher times than when hand-timed so it can sometimes be hard to compare them to other players outside of the team. I believe the reason being that it is a more accurate way of measuring a 40 when your purpose is simply to compare players on a team to each other and can only be used  as a consistant internal measurement as the majority of 40 timing is done by hand.

footballfan: The reason that 40 times are usually hand held is convenience. A lone scout with a stop watch, a decent running surface and, if needed, a field measuring tape to assure the 40 yard distance is layed out accurately are all that are required - no further equipment and no difficult set up. Put them with a willing and ready prospect, and you have a quick-and-dirty 40 time capable of being roughly compared on an apples-to-apples basis to other hand held 40 times.

Man it has been forever since I've posted!!!  It's nice to see everyone into Casey and Brett's situation.  I know everyone wants to see these guys in the League as do I but someone said it perfect when they said that DIII guys are usually given one strike.  It really sucks but a guy with 4.67 40 speed is a dime a dozen and given the competition level I don't see many NFL teams drafting a small school receiver that isn't a blazer.  (You have to remember that there aren't very many GREAT DIII DB's)  On that same token I think a lot of scouts are also reluctant on QB's in that situation because of the speed of Defensive linemen in the NFL.  Hopefully if they don't get drafted they will be signed as free agents.  The thing is if these guys really want to make it there they just need to PLAY at a higher level of competition.  I think that too many guys get obsessed w/ making to the NFL that they don't look at their other options.  The CFL is a great league no doubt but did you realize that AFL (arena 1) players can make much more money than Americans in Canada???  They also have more exposure in the states that would help any player.  I think that both these guys should get a shot, but they have to perform when they get a chance for private workouts.  I know from experience that if you do well at those you get a chance...Good luck to both those guys just KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN!!!

I would like to also tell eveyone that the two cats in the Tricities won their first game 44-41 against the Billings (MT) Outlaws.  George Carter had 4 catches for 42 yards and 1 TD and T. Ford had 3 grabs for 22 yards and also 2 solo and 2 asst. tackles.  We head down to Wyoming tonight so wish us luck!!!

P.S. Joe Wiser (former PSU QB) also worked out with us last night so we may have another NW kid with us!

CamCat,

Thanks for posting the News-Register article. I live in Michigan, and it's interesting Detroit was represented at the workout. Joey Harrington didn't seem to play with the same confidence he had at Oregon, and he will be somewhere else soon. The Lions also brought in Jon Kitna, Luke McGowan and Shaun King,
but it's safe to say QB is still a need area. Even if Kitna wins the job, he's not the long term solution. I think Brett and Casey could surprise some of the so-called draft experts.
While were talking about Kitna lets hear some comparisons between him and Elliott.

Thanks Catback for keeping us posted!

Wildcat 64,

We know you are lurking.  Did all that sun in Hawaii sap your strength?  We have not heard from you in several months.
If you are going to get your Wildcat recruiting bonus this year we need to have you step up your pace a bit more ;).

Speaking of speed in the 40, I wonder what Joe Namath's was when he was in his prime, wearing his knee brace as he was throwing all those touchdown passes?  I wonder if he was closer to 6 than any other #.  It didn't seem to slow him down very much.

Good point CamCat, I wonder what the 40 times were for Dan Marino! I think agility in the pocket is more important than the 40, IMO.

Cam Cat,

Yes, we are back and done with "snowbirding" for the winter.

Fear not, we step up the recruiting  a notch in a couple of weeks when Mrs. 64 and I host in our home the Cats Admissions folks along with the prospect list.  You can rest assured while Admissions is putting on the "pitch" I'll have the 2004 National Championship dvd tape playing in the family room! :)

Guess Who:
"...has all the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. ...served as team captain and has proven to be an excellent leader both on and off the field. Is an intelligent player who takes what the defense gives him and rarely forces the ball into coverage. Knows how to read a defense and does a good job of going through his progression. ...lacks a quick release and doesn't have a cannon for an arm but he does have enough arm strength to make all the throws. ...is an extremely accurate passer who hits his receivers in stride and usually places the ball where only the receiver can catch it. ... does posses the ability to get out of the pocket and make an accurate throw on the run but he lacks the athleticism to make a play with his feet when needed."

Analysis of Vince Young:

"...has an outstanding combination of size and athleticism for a quarterback. He has good field vision, a quick release, and the arm strength to make all the throws required of an NFL quarterback. He has the ability to avoid the rush, get out of the pocket, and make an accurate throw on the run or make a play with his feet when needed. Can beat you with his arm or with his legs."

"Needs to continue to improve his ability to read defenses and go through his progressions rather than locking onto a single receiver. He needs to improve his decision making ability and work on not forcing the ball into coverage. ...has an awkward sidearm delivery with a low release point. This can lead to passes being knocked down at the line of scrimmage if it isn't corrected. He spent most of his time in college playing out of the shotgun and will need to adjust to playing under center in the NFL."

"He may take a year or two to develop but he has all the physical tools and intangibles to be a franchise signal caller at the professional level. He will be a bit of a risky pick at the top of the draft because he didn't become a top passing quarterback until this past season."

I'm making my plans for the Hardin-Simmons/Linfield game. Can anyone give me some helpful travel tips. I'll be flying. Do I fly into Fort Worth?

Good time for my first post.  I would recommend flying to DFW staying in Downtown Fort Worth and driving to Abilene on Saturday morning.  If you are going to travel all that way might as well have a little fun.  It is about 150 miles from FW to Abilene.

Catback send me an email so we can hook up in Corpus when you guys come down here.

D O.C.

Let's see....was given a convertible as a rental car in Las Vegas and the southern Utah National Parks had the most snow all winter the week before I toured. Hmmm. Plenty of time to contemplate Streak vs. DIII Championship. First NCAA ring wins.

True story? After watching the latest WC11 release I remembered someone told a story about Brandon Hazenberg sort of teaching himself to high-jump and he competed for LINFIELD around 6'8"?

DenS in a convertible in Las Vegas. Boy, that doesn't sound like trouble or anything.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.
