Offseason Wildcat Trivia  Question:  Which Cat holds the record for the most QB sacks in     a single season??  Answer:  Jim Mayo --- 38 sacks.  173 total sacks in three years (1977 - 1979).  He was a awsome and tough defensive Cat.                                                                                                                                  Jim is currently Head Football Coach at Colony High School in Alaska.  His team was the 2007 State Runnerup in the Large School State Football  Championship! "Once a Cat...Always a Cat".....Congratulations Jim!!!

I must be missing the joke because according to this, he had 135 sacks in the other two seasons. That would mean he had more than the 38 sacks in one season. If a guy had 173 sacks in 3 years, that would be a sight to behold!
Saturday will be the most epic tailgate ever, especially if my wife gives birth under the Quick-Shade.

Jim Mayo holds the career sack record at 38.

I am just shocked that anyone would think it is possible to even have 38 sacks in a season!

173 sacks isn't too bad. The other teams probably started keying on him his senior year which kept him under 200. ;)

d-train

Just kidding. Was 173 the total tackles he was in on over 3-4 years? That sounds reasonable.

Glanville is going to be good for lots of quotes and sound bites. Mouse Davis will, too. Those two should stir things up at PSU and draw more attention to the football program overall.
Two words:  THE STREAK

What happens when Glanville starts taking some of your Wildcat recruits?  I mean, their has definately been D1-AA talent on that Linfield roster for quite some time...nobody is worried about some of those future Wildcats finally taking their scholarships to play for a promising looking PSU team?  As opposed to opting to pay for school in order to be part of such a good program like Linfield?  Maybe it won't even be a problem, but its interesting (for us fans of other NWC institutions) to think about.

bluenote

(509)Rat...have you ever been to PSU? It's a completely different environment/situation being a large state school in a very urban setting. I think the Linfield "experience" and facilities can stand on it's own. We're very happy with the kids/talent that we get and I don't think PSU is a big minus. I happen to hope they do well as I enjoy going up there in the evening after the Linfield games or on off weeks to watch them play.

PSU only really has Glanville and Mouse going for them. Their facilities, stadium, Athletic Dept. are nothing to sneaze at. And I believe that they don't have an AD at the present time. And won't Davis be 75 by the time the season starts, and Glanville 65? Do many at PSU really believe that they'll be there for more than 2-3 years? And could this not be a "Dennis Erickson" type deal for Glanville? Stay for a year or two, improving the program, and then move on to a I-A school?

As far as Montana having the defense? No problem. They were in the top 10 in all I-AA last season. They really carried the team to the semis last season, when the offense struggled most of the year. They return, I believe 7 starters. But they played 2-3 deep at every position. They are loaded on that side of the ball.

I hope I didn't offend you bluenote.  All I know is that it seems to me that if you are a high school football player in oregon and you aren't quite good enough to get some serious money from a DI school, then your next immediate thought is..."I'll play at Linfield."  Which I don't blame the kids for.  I too enjoyed the smaller campus and you can't compare the education you are getting with that of a huge state school (small class sizes, classes taught by professors, one-on-one work with professors as freshmen, etc.).  I mean if i were from anywhere near portland, and I wasn't going to be anything more than a preferred walk-on at UO or OSU and PSU was offering me some money, I'm most likely not going to play in the NFL so I'd play with the top program in the NWC and get a good education.  And hey, if I have a Michael Allan growth spurt in college, Linfield is still a place where I can get looks from the NFL, AFL, CFL, etc.  But if PSU gets competitive, and really starts bringing in some talent and it looks like they could play with montana consistently, then I take the money, play on a higher level and go to the bigger school.  I guess, thats really my thinking.  And if anything its a compliment to Linfield's program and academia for being able to get very good oregonians to come play for them.

The phrase "nothing to sneeze at" implies that they should not be overlooked due to redeeming qualities. So, I guess this post is a compliment to psu?

PSU being more attractive is a much larger issue for Western Oregon than Linfield.  Good for PSU if they start doing well but I don't think Linfield's staff will lose any sleep over it.

Oops. I knew I'd mess that one up. I meant, "something to sneaze at." The facilities are not up to the level of a Montana, nor even Montana St's. Being off campus (even though an on campus location is not possible), doesn't have the adavantages that on campus facilities have, like at EWU, UM, and MSU.

I was just giving you a hard time! Not meaning to seem irritable- I agree (of course) that psu has a long road to reach Montana, but how many schools are really at there level? 10-15? Glanville is going to bring excitement- the school says they got 40k in donations in 2 days. That is what the team needs, because the viks have been a lot of things, but horrible is not one of them.

As said before by blue, spiritof 86, WC11  and others.....

PSU, although the biggest college in the state,  is a different type of University. Mostly a Commuter College, which is  why they don't offen draw the big crowds at home games. It was time to step up! Or step out of the Football game at the School. That's from an inside source. They are putting alll the marbles in the ring. At last the president is behind the team and  backing them with money it sounds like.
Like blue, I've gone to games in the past when they were fun to watch, sounds like that might be the case again.
It doesn't get any better than a win at home by the CATS, and  a Vikings win at PGE park at night. You gotta love Football, what a game!!!!!!!!!.....America's Game!!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!
