For those of you that played defense, a question.  What is the key to stopping the Fly?  I am in my first year with a six-man football team here in TX and our next opponent runs something similar.  Anything you can share would be great.  Thanks.

A good push from the edges can really upset the FLY. We played it almost like an option team with assignments: If motion comes one way, the back-side guys have counter, QB, and reverse while the play-side guys flow towards the sweep and off-guard dive. A strong safety, end, or corner needs to jump up into the face of the sweep man without giving up too much ground that the guy can just duck under and bounce it back out.

Or just wait for Wildcat 11 to make the tackle

Just a few random thoughts:

Thanks olinemom...Sean is doing well. He's at his high school's football game.

I caught a glimpse of Coach Locey on the sideline of the Oregon State-Cincinnati game.

To borrow an old phrase: GO SALTY D!

I hope everyone is enjoying the new football season.

Go Cats! Make it 62 in '17!

You have to defend the fly (IMO) the same way you defend any other misdirection offense and thats to preach to your kids gap integrity.  your interior players (MLB, DT) need to stay responsible for their respective gaps (A and B) because all fly teams are gonna run dives and traps once your interior starts biting on the fly.  Your corners need to keep contain and any left over safeties and outside LB's need to play it inside out...stretching the fly towards the sideline.  In high school especially I would man up (of course, if its six man you might not have a choice) since QB's aren't as strong or accurate as n college, giving DB's more time to break on balls.  It's also not a bad idea, although it may not be feasible in 6 man, to have some type of automatic blitz into that fly motion off of the edge.  I've only played against the fly in an eleven man situation so maybe this isn't very helpful, but good luck to you and your team.

Thanks d-train and 509.  In our scouting we have noticed a huge tendency- the direction of motion determines the direction of the play.  The timing of the snap and his position on the line of scrimmage is where the ball goes.  This team does not boot and with only three linemen counters are not very effective.  We will play either a 3-3 or a 2-2-2 defense.  DE's have inside out, corner has outside contain and our linebacker fills.  Thanks for the advice.  I'll let you know if your coaching pointers worked.

James Day, sports columnist for the Salem Statesman offered up the following predictions for this week.  Oregon looses,
Oregon State looses (which we now know has happened), LSU wins and Western Oregon beats Linfield.  His comments were as follows:

"The Wolves will stop the Wildcat's running game and force Trevor Schraer to beat them through the air.  He'll come close.  WOU wins 30-24."

Come on Cats, lets prove Mr. Day wrong tomorrow!

See all of you 'Cat fans tomorrow in Monmouth!  I'm expecting a rockin' crowd tomorrow and for the 'Cat fans to annex WOU stadium as "'Catdome South (1a)"

EXPECT TO WIN!

Good Luck to all of the NWC teams facing non-conference opponents this weekend...even Linfield ;)

They've both left out "do not get blocked" and "never leave your feet".

When I think of philosophy, DOC, you are the first person who comes to my mind.

Olinemom, we are looking forward to seeing you, and showing you the world-famous Catdome.
It won't be long now. But when I think of all the class materials still to make for Charles who is monitoring my classes for me--that's why I named him St. Charles last week--it is amazing.  However, tomorrow BC has a game and Stone Station has a big tailgate party.  Linfield begins its football season and all is right with the world.  Hope both teams play well and win!!  See you all Tuesday evening!!
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!
