Fear the Poet

this was a hard fought game. Both teams had costly penalties. Whittier had a 30 yard personal foul that really stung. The "fumble" that is referred to in the fourth quarter was caused by a blitzing LB who crushed the qb to force the fumble. That was not a UPS mistake, that was a Poet big play.

It appears the coach should take some notes from the fans of UPS. I was there and they were a very fun bunch of people who welcomed the Poet faithful with open arms.

I am however pretty excited that I won't have to hear that stupid chainsaw over the pa system for about two years. :)

As I'm sure others will attest...they run one of the more bush/obnoxious game day ops in recent memory...the PA guy needs to lay off the Red Bull...

Oh, those home field announcers.  I know it's part of the advantage of playing at home but, God it's annoying when things aren't going your way.

Last year at Abilene, every time HSU would get a first down the announcer would say, "It's another Cowboy FIRST Down!"  Real slow on the first down part.  The crowd would say it and motion the first.  It got very annoying, along with the banging on the oil drums.

It must be REALLY tough to play at College Station.  The visitors get a tiny section of the stadium.  Probably 98% of the people there are pulling for the Aggies, and Aggies are a loyal bunch.  If you ever get the chance you owe it to yourself to see a game there.

I'll admit that the chainsaw was a little over-the-top, especially given the result but what about the game ops is bush and/or obnoxious?  Granted I have only been around for a few years but I've never heard the PA announcer say anything negative about the other team.  Do they treat the other team poorly behind the scenes?  Enlighten us with the dirt.

I'm not trying to apologize for the Loggers loss.  They simply got outplayed by a decent (not good, but not bad) Whittier team.  The penalties hurt and turnover hurt but that Whittier quarterback was a stud.

I'll also agree that sometime the UPS quotes are a little cocky but you also need to realize that the reporter talks to the players for about 3-5 minutes each and then takes a 5 second quote.  Sometimes, the reporter is just looking for something to fit what he (or in the TNT's case, she) wants to write about for that week.

NW,

I know you're just having your team's back and I understand that.  However, that same reporter also covers PLU and I have yet to read a PLU quote the past few years that are even close to being on the level of the gems you get from the Loggers.

BTW....  +1 for being the lone Logger poster to come back on here to defend the Logs honor.  I wish I could say that about some of the other UPS posters but they are MIA....

for the record, I thought the chainsaw was annoyong, but I had no problem with the gameday ops. I thought they did a good job and were very welcoming.

I especially love this one....
UPS coach Phil Willenbrock said. "I don't want to say we lost the game. They beat us. But our mistakes did not help."

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh  ....  you lost and they beat you,  i believe that's how it works??? ;D

  Crown 'em!

That will never get old!

Evidentally, Budweiser agrees (or is it Miller or Coors? - anyway, it's one of these beer companies), as they have started airing a commercial with those clips of him after his team's collapse.

Linfield at Willamette should be a fun game.  Even though Willamette doesn’t have the best talent this season they have no quit.  Coach Speckman's kids play hard for him and they’ve been in every game this year so our ‘Cats better be sharp.

True. Even though the Bearcats don't have a great record, they've played everyone pretty close. They lost to WOU by about the same margin as the 'Cats, lost to Gustavus Adolphus by 9 on the road (and they are currently 3-0), and SOU by just a TD. The Bearcats have to be thinking none of that really matters if they can win the conference, so the 'Cats need to be ready.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

OK, so maybe bush was a bit much but I'll go with obnoxious and unprofessional.  First of all the guy needs to realize that screaming into the mic is annoying and unnecessary.  Second of all...a good PA announcer realizes that he is not "the show," people didn't come to the game to hear him.  A simple down and distance will suffice.

As far as the reporters go...I don't care if they get interviewed for two hours and take five seconds of it.  Of course they're going to take "I don't want to say we lost the game. They beat us. But our mistakes did not help", from the interview because it's an idiodic statement.  I can cut the kids some slack because unlike a pac-10 player, they  don't have reporters asking them questions everyday of the week...but the Head Coach should know better...And I do agree that it's nice to get some other views from around the league!

On another topic...the Linfield game should be interesting this weekend.  I'm always weary of that fly but it seems like we've got enough speed on the defense to counter it...

First off, I want to say that I'm glad that this conversation has remained civil.  I think that is what distinguishes the Division III fans from others.  I know the Loggers have a new PA guy from the last few years so I'm just confused when the last time you were at Baker Stadium was?  Personally, I think the current guy is a little dull.  Maybe a little bit of homerism might be a little fun.

I'll admit that I have never been to a game at the Catdome (this year might be my first, if I can make it) but how does the Linfield PA guy handle announcements?  Does he do anything special on first downs or pregame or scores?  Just wondering so I can get a feel of the other NWC facilities.

The Fly is tricky, and one or two long runs are almost a guarantee, but it sure feels like the Linfield coaches figured out how to minimize the Fly years ago.

The Bearcats have not been within 11 points of the Cats since 1998.

I hope we still have the  magic formula to stop the Fly once again.

I wasn't at the game last year but in 2004 he was brutal.  So if you've got a new guy, my apologies.  Linfield isn't the only place that has a good PA guy, in fact most are very good.  The quality that they share is that they understand what they are there for.  They aren't there to pump up the crowd, they aren't there to give you the play by play, they aren't the reason you came out to the game.  They give you information.  "Time out Willamette", "Starting at number 5, Quarterback Brett Elliott", Pass Complete to Casey Allen gain of 12, first down Linfield...etc. etc.  Not "great run off the right end by Billy Walker for ANOTHER Looooggggeeerrr Firrrrrrrst Dowwwwwwwn!!!"  or "GREAT RUN BY RORY LEE CHOPPING DOWN DEFENDERS FOR A GAIN OF 25!"

Not a huge deal by the way...just annoying to me.  But I run events, that's my job, so I was taught a certain way and I've seen disasters and I've seen professionals and people's reaction to both...I'm probably a bit more aware of it.  I'm a bit jaded now when I go to any sporting event or concert.  I notice things that I shouldn't be paying any attention to...I'm not at work!  Everybody else can probably just ignore it but to me it's like running your fingernails down a chalkboard.  So it cool that you have your guys back...I've got the Linfield blinders on from time to time too!!  :)

NWfan,

Good to see a Logger fan back on the board.  Looking forward to a great game this weekend.  That pre game article for UPS-Whittier game posted by OXYBOB said K. Williams would likely be back against the Lutes.  Any more word on that?

It appears to me that you guys really need him back at QB.  PLU has been very good against the run so far, or else the other teams have had to pass because we get ahead so quick each week.

Quick question on Williams...Can he really accurately throw the football?  He missed some guys last year against Linfield that would have made that game a bit interesting.  Obviously he's improved but is he a force slingin' it this year?
