There's no need for a tiebreaker for football in the NWC with no automatic bid.

hum?....what would happen if 2 NWC teams ended up 5-1 in league (not having lost to each other but other teams respectively) and both had the exact same record of 8-1. Each team playing the same number of in-region teams and non-conference teams. Why wouldn't there need to be a tie breaker? How would they figure that out?

Pat Coleman

What would that tiebreaker be used to determine in this scenario?

blue, that's not possible as one of the teams would have had to win the matchup game.

also I think that it's up to the Conference to set their own tiebreaker rules to determine Conference champ.  The NWC may not have done this yet deciding to have co-champs since no playoff spot is on the line until next year.

Foss, do you know the NWC tie-breaker criteria, if there were any in football, in 2001?

Ralph, sorry - no idea regarding the tie-breaker criteria now or back in '01. I've checked out the nwcsports.com website recently and didn't find anything but may have not looked hard enough.
Thanks for looking.

I haven't seen the tie-breaker outlined on the NWC website either.

Ralph, I emailed Steve Flegel, the NWC's information director. His response confirms some of the above posts. His last paragraph discusses how he thinks a decision will be made starting in 2008, when the NWC will have an auto bid, and therefore tiebreaking criteria:

"The NWC does not break ties to determine conference champions in any sport.  It recognizes them as co-champions.  The conference only uses tiebreakers to determine post season advancement (automatic berths to NCAA playoffs), conference playoff berths or conference tournament seeding.  It may seem like semantics, but in the eyes of the Presidents and Board of ADs, it is not.

Since the NWC does not yet have an automatic berth for the NCAA bid, there have never been tiebreaking criteria.

I am sure the football coaches will be asked to come up with a criteria at their meeting in November, that will be reviewed/approved by the ADs, then Presidents.  I don't know what they will do beyond head to head in the case of two teams tied for first."
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Foss thanks for the research.  I was curious about that.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but the NWC has used the post-season tourney for the Pool A bid in all other sports, e.g., soccer, baseball/softball, volleyball, hoops.

Foss...nice research! I look forward to the results of our study if it ever happens.

speedybigboy....like I said earlier...my brain wasn't quite functioning too well when I created that scenario....but it sounded kind of good  :) ..but I did think of one thing...if the teams ended up 4-1 with one week of the season canceled because of a natural disaster or other event. That might have been the week they were supposed to play each other.  :o

I hope we all meet for the 1st round of the playoffs in sunny so.cal later in the year when one of your team's take on the Tigers in L.A. Until then, keep hope alive and good luck from here on out.

Monrovia Cat, thanks again for the updates. I'm home and had a good weekend.

(509)Rat, thanks for confirming what I noticed about L&C. With some support, they will be getting better.

Menlo starting a ton of freshmen and sophomores. Now if they can keep them around for awhile, they could be competitive.

Will there be parity in the NWC?

The pick 'em update should be up shortly.

Just my 2 cents.......

As for the tie breaker, funny we are talking about it for one, but the way I see it, D3 will deturmine the winner If one of the teams gets into the playoffs. That's this year.

Next year we need to have a tie breaker in place for the auto bid. I'm sure the Presidents and the AD's will fix that this winter.

Right now I'm still enjoying the Victory last night.
See you guy's this weekend at Homecoming!!!

I love D3 Football!!!

Ralph - yes, all the other sports you mentioned in the NWC have an auto bid.

Are you really thinking?
Quotecome on linfield, get in the playoffs and bring that team TDTommy calls mediocre so we can ease the sting of what you did to our 04 & 05 teams

Believe you me, LINFIELD would enjoy coming down this year. We'd even bring some contracts for home and home games to sign. Saves the postage, you see.
