QuoteI think you can say a conference "runs" through a team when they lose a great class of players and if they can maintain that title.

Whitworth lost a tight end to the NFL, the best QB in the league, 2 all-conference o-lineman, both d-tackles, and two linebackers (1 started consistently and the other was the starter in their 3-4 package)...did I mention their tight end was lost to the NFL?  Thats a very good class, one that any other team in the NWC would have been happy to have.  And one thing about next years's D is that almost all of the starters will be upper classmen.  They aren't bad, but have been stuck behind this senior class for the last 3 years.  Next years D wont be as dominant, but don't think they are going to drop to the bottom of the league or anything.

QuoteOn a personal note to 509...I think your first posts after the game were pretty revealing about some of your character.  It was very surprising because I think that Linfield fans have been pretty responsive to your contribution to the board over the past year.

The linfield fans are, in general, unresponsive to anyone's posting here.  You may be kind and responsive, but a majority of your buddies are not.  Why do you think that everytime we get posters on here from other NWC schools, who may have less talent or tradition than linfield, they leave?  We can't even get more than a couple PLU posters here and they have just as much tradition as Linfield, and just as much reason to post.  Here's something from your very own websitie...

"as a clearly more talented Linfield squad squandered scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity and most 'Cat fans, including myself, felt we gave away the NWC crown."

With 7 turnovers last year...also called takeaways...I would say the Whitworth defense took the championship from you last year.  In fact, Casey Clifton literally took the ball away from your runningback to score in last years game...but then again the ball was wet so I understand why something like that could have happened.  This years game was proff that the INT's thrown by Scharer were no fluke...he made bad decisions under pressure for a second year in a row.  Thank you for giving credit where credit was due though.

QuoteI am curious if Whitworth lost if you still would have expressed your feelings that you've "bottled up" all year long?  Rather brave to put everyone on blast after Whitworth wins.  Linfield fans take a ton of heat but they have the stones to put their neck out before big games and they don't shrink when it gets shoved back in their face.

I have yet to shrink after a Whitworth loss.  I posted on the SCIAC board after the Redlands game, and the MIAC board after the St. John's loss last year.  I have yet to back down because of a loss.  And I posted what I thought about the Whitworth game prior to saturday and gave a score on this board...21-17 (a +4 for the genious who posted earlier about his teams loss and the spread I put on the game)...does that mean I have the stones to continue to post on this board WC11?  Had Whitworth loss, I wouldn't have anything to blast about...well, unless of course it had been snowing in Spokane, then I could have come up with excuses as to why Whitworth lost the game and blasted Wildcat nation at the same time.

I contribute more information to this board than most, and may as well stop posting.  All it does is give you Linfield fans something to bitch about.  Had I not said anything this board would be silent right now, since you obviously have nothing to say about the game on Saturday (surprise, surprise).

"As for running up the score. Start a 2nd half with a 35 point lead is not a gauranteed win. Even when you do bring the subs in they are not going to lay down. They are out there to win and score points. Let them play and play hard. And let the outcome be what it is."

I didn't mean to pursue this as much as has happened, because normally I would agree with you.  But in this case, I consider L&C (this year only - not every year) to be like the Caltech basketball team.  Against that group, you know you are going to win.  Even with subs, what is the poing of a pressing defense and fast breaking through the second half with a huge lead.

I am more than ready to let this go, however.

lets talk about how the d3 world on the west coast can get more media coverage on D3SPORTS.COM

If you go to the west teams their are very few current articles released.

PPJ, If you mean the press releases on the individual team pages then I think those would be releases from the schools.  I think we've done pretty well this year with coverage.

Bingo. Schools use their logins and they are posted automatically. That's why they all include a line something like this:

509,

In regards to your posts after the game....deflect all you want but before the game you did had a few posts where you have some good takes on the match-ups on the game but as soon as the game is over you run home to your computer and fire off a post that showed you’re pretty much an ass.  In those posts before the game you didn’t take any shots at Linfield as a program or the fans on this board until after the game then you were more than willing to take your shots.  It came off as cowardly.

BTW, I don’t think Whitworth falls off that much next season but the main reason the Rats have won back-to-back titles graduates after this season.

In regards to my thoughts on the game I'll post that on my blog where you can read my excuses for why we were robbed. BTW..that last part about we were robbed was in jest because I think Whitworth's DBs won that game yesterday.

11 - Speaking of next season, that's going to be interesting.  Whitworth loses a lot, Linfield loses a lot, PLU loses a lot.  Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if UPS or Menlo is going to have a breakthrough year, it seems like next year will be the chance.  Just a teaser, because we can pick this up again in the off season.

One last thought about yesterday's game -

The Spokane newspaper quoted Coach Smith in Saturday's preview article talking about how hard last year's game was to swallow and how much the Linfield players remembered it.  Also the Linfield pregame release had the following quote:
"Our players have been upset and disappointed since last year's loss to them. It's a game we're excited about and have been looking forward to playing since then."

It is interesting to me that Linfield spent so much time and energy looking back at last year's game.  I wonder if they wouldn't have been better off just to "flush it" as the old Lute saying goes.

I only bring this up because I find it so amazing how this year's game played out so similarly to last year with Linfield turnovers/Whitworth takeaways playing such a big role.

Now on to UPS.  Still can't believe they lost like that to Menlo.

I'm sure Cawcdad can comment on this but the stats look like every time UPS had the ball they turned it over (I think there were 2 INTs and 4 or 5 fumbles lost....)....

I want to forget yesterday. Our coaches and players can learn from it and go on. I don't want Whitworth to become some kind of jinx for us.

We've got L&C coming to the Catdome next week. It will be the HOF game and plenty of young 'Cats should get to play. Desertcat, will you be here?

Darn. We'd looked forward to seeing you. Probably next year.

Do the twins know you're off to see some blonde? You'll probably be kept lots warmer there.

Linfield out of the Top 25 for the first time in what...8 years??  Nice...

Redlands has to be pissed that they probably won't get in the playoffs and Whitworth is ranked four spots in front of them despite beating them earlier this season and they probably will make the playoffs...  :-\

coco

Selection Sunday is gonna be reeeeal interesting, isn't it?  Several conferences are undecided, like the Liberty League in the east, with several scenarios available.

Yeah, it sucks to be out of the Top 25, but we can't complain.

I believe it's the first time ever outside of the D3football.com top 25 (which started in '03) and that now only Mt. Union and UMHB have been ranked every week of every year.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.
