Welp...the highlight of the game in Orange, CA, was when Whitworth scored it's 33rd - point because the fireworks at Disneyland 3 miles away started to go off and it sounded like a Pirate ship attacking.
Some weird things happened tonight in a very entertaining game for a neutral fan (I did sit on the Whitworth side next to a couple gals who looked like they were dressed for a garden party and waving 18 inch plastic cutlasses every time Whitworth did something positive).
Before Whit scored that 33rd point they had a trick play all set up at about the 12 with 3rd and 8. Chapman managed a time-out but there was much confusion. Worth scored on the next play anyway for the 33. The two-pointer was fumbled (sound familiar CATFAN?) allowing Chapman to keep the lead.
At the end of the game with 50 something seconds left the Rats fumbled inside the 2 yard line (sound familiar CATFAN?) and it seemed everybody touched the ball before it ended up under a white uniform for a 39 – 35 lead.
There ensued much more confusion and the scorekeeper took off the 39 and put back the 33. The ball was put back at the 2-yard line and Whitworth knocked it in. Then 41 was put up on the visitors side and the announcer stated the touchdown did stand and that last play was a 2 point conversion for 41. Without making the swordkeepers explain it to me 6 or 7 times I might not have figured it out.
The two teams looked very similar. They could have switched uniforms at half.
Got to keep an eye on Wilson and Anderson. They scat when they're through the hole and do accelerate.
Whitworth tried 3 major trick plays at crucial points. You would have thought it was not a Western Regional game that will count down the road.
Chapman's stadium appears to be finished. Under the field parking, lit stair cases, even the front row seating is 25 feet off the ground, individual plastic seats, field turf and it faces east away from the sun after 2pm.
Too bad there is no person related to Chapman football who posts here.

Thanks for the run-down DOC.

That last play confused Bob on the radio too.  When Nelson took in the two-point conversion, Bob C. thought that was the touchdown.  But then finally figured out it was the PAT for two.  He did mention the scoreboard had changed a couple of times.  Wow.

I am glad Whitworth rebounded with a good effort, especially for the offensive line which had been average in the first game and downright bad in the second.

It might've gotten away from them when Chapman went up 35-27 late in the game, but the new QB showed real poise.

Whitworth game story says Anderson had a school record 324 all-purpose yards.   :o

WOW!

It's been awhile since I've been myself on the board.  But here's my thought for tonight a) playing a team with scholarships (not looking for excuses) makes these days a tough game.  Southern the last few years has made themselves competitive as is our other opponent Western Oregon in a few games.  We won't go there now.

Tonights game was good for the team, coaches, crowd and us faithful fans.  As we move into NW play  this game, with it's positives will set the tone for the year to come.  It's good to see the new offense with all it's possibilities producing.   Only time  will tell what this team is capable.

Menlo better be ready for a hungry Wildcat team.  That's what I saw tonight.

GO CATS!

ONE GAME AT A TIME!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

Linfield's defense is definitely picking up where they left off last year.  From the looks of it this has the potential to be one outstanding defensive football team.  Offenses win games...Defenses win championships!  Just as an observation there obviously is a very young talented group on this defensive unit when you see that the unit started 1 Freshman, 2 Sophomores, 4 Juniors and only 4 Seniors.
My bet is that this defensive unit brings a NWC Championship back to the Catdome in 2008!!

This game was a hard fought battle. You could tell neither team was in the mood to loose. SOU is a very large and quick team but I thought we stacked up well against them. I had the feeling that we were wearing them down in the 4th quarter.

I too was impressed with our defense. They put a lot of pressure on the SOU's qb and didn't give up any big plays. The linebacking crew is very aggressive and our D-line seemed to hold their own against the bigger SOU O-Line. The db's didn't get burned and seemed to do a workman like job.

On offense, it didn't help to have Franklin banged up but he played well though the whole game. I'm very impressed with him and actually the whole offense I believe will come around to be very good. We just have to work out a few bugs with this new system we have implemented.

I'd like to see some more passing out of this set but I think we were taking what they were giving and keeping them off balance pretty well. Our stats show that we were pretty balanced between running and passing. I would think that we could improve on our short quick passing game and also throw in some long balls....didn't see much of a deep threat yesterday, although I know we have some track guys that can fly. It was nice to see the big tight ends get in the passing mix also. Several nice mid range gains to those fellas.

It was great to see many posters at the tailgate including: Swede, TuxGuy, Proud Pap Joe, Foss, Gig Harbor Cat and a bunch of others.....I look forward to next weeks game against Menlo!

I think it's called the "spread option attack offense" but I'm not a football expert. Maybe someone else can elaborate.....all I know is that it's pretty good, especially if you have good quick skill people and lineman that can block. But it takes a good qb to pull it off that can both run and pass. It's exciting to watch, but we need to fine tune it and get better at it. I'd like to see more a little more passing and a little less running by the qb. But it does kind of surprise the defense when the qb just takes off out of the shotgun and gains 12 yards.

Overtime stat:
L 1-G  S04   Lamson, Simon rush for 2 yards to the SOU2 (A. Scolamieri).
L 2-G  S02   Franklin, Cole rush for 1 yard to the SOU1 (Kevin Harrell).
L 3-G  S01   Franklin, Cole rush for 1 yard to the SOU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 15:00.

Two rushes from the QB for the TD. Did the coaches not want to give it to Lamson or Masters?
Cole ran the ball two fewer times than did Lamson. I don't like it when your QB runs almost as much or more times than the running backs.
Any input?

R&P,

The two TD's by Cole were more like inches than a yard so I was fine with those.  I don't mind Cole running the ball at all but just would like to see him do a little better job of getting down quicker.

The offense is going to grow and get more explosive as we go and get healthy.

Thanks for the input. It's hard to follow the position of the ball on the radio and the live feed was awful. I'm looking forward to the Menlo game . I hope the live stream works better this time.

i think several of those runs were on pass plays where he could not find an open guy...

Fun game and cool atmosphere under the lights. Good to see Bluenote, GHC, ORCity99, and to meet Mr. and Mrs. Tuxguy. Catdome shirts are sweet, WC11.

Defense looks tough. I was also impressed (and a little surprised) with Franklin. I was worried the talk I'd heard on him was maybe going to be a bit overhyped. The wasn't the case, as he really is fast and shifty. Been awhile since the 'Cats have had a QB that can make those sorts of plays with his legs. I think he is going to be fun to watch, and as a sophomore is likely only going to improve. We have to keep him healthy, though.

The downside was what everyone already knows. Four more fumbles, two of them lost. One led to SOU's only score and the second almost seized defeat from the jaws of certain victory with 1 minute or so left at SOU's goal line.

If this team can hang onto the ball this year, I am optimistic of the possibilities.

As for UPS  "How Can Brown Lose to U(ww)?" All I can say is the Warhawks had to travel halfway across the country and still won 60-7. My question is what in the world is going to happen next year when it is UPS that has to travel to Wizzy? 105-3, perhaps?
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Maybe we can get Jake Locker to transfer to UPS...he might actually have a better chance winning some games with the Loggers than he has with the Dawgs.  :D

Foss,

Playing on the road probably favors a slightly closer score for UPS next year.  Because UWW did fly all the way across the country, they probably only brought 55 guys or so.  At that point there was only so deep they could go in the depth chart.  But when they play out in Wisconsin next year they can play all 100 guys if they want.  Less likely then that they will continue to score at such a rate through the second half.

On a side note, I have heard that NWC ADs voted to let schools bring as many guys to conference games as they want to pay for.  There no longer is a travel limit to overnight trips.

I think we can refer to it as the "go easier on L&C rule".
