I think the 'Cats got hosed on the blocked field goal:

"Occasionally (about once in 40 field-goal attempts in the NFL), the defense will succeed in blocking a field goal. If a blocked field goal is in or behind the neutral zone, it is treated like a fumble and can be advanced by either team. Beyond the neutral zone, a blocked kick is treated like a punt or missed field goal and can only be advanced by the defense, unless a defensive player fumbles the ball, after which an offensive player can advance it."

Doesn't make any difference now. Did Coach Smith argue the call?

RP,
He was all over them like a bad rash.  Are you kidding me.  That was a game changer .  Nothing like a homer at home.

Speaking of weird . . . Willamette finishes the game with 184 yards rushing and 285 yards passing. :o  Grant Leslie was 7-13 for all 285 yards and five touchdowns.

Wow---over 40 yds per completion and 5 of the 7 for a TD..crazy.

Speaking on stats:  Linfield beat Western in nearly every stat in this game (we even had less turnovers than they did...).  Yet we lose.  Field position was huge and of course was the one place Western beat the Cats---2 of their 3 scoring drives started in Cat territory......

A couple bad breaks and a couple mental errors for the 'cats but in general we can keep or heads up after that one. Linfield stood right in there and battled a good DII team right to the finish. Probably gave WOU one of their tougher games of the year. We played hard nosed football today....The defense was especially impressive....and in general the offense moved the ball well.....good work 'cats! Let's end the season with a win at PLU!

....PLU/Menlo Score anyone? They said it was 20-14 PLU at halftime......

I think we're both sweating the PLU/Menlo score, eh blue?????    ;D
Go Cats!

Just got home. PLU beat the Oaks 35-34. Menlo scored with less than a minute to go and went for 2 and were unsuccessful. They then tried an onside kick and recovered it only to be called offside. The next onside was recovered by the Lutes, who then took a couple of knees. An exciting game.

I do not think I have ever seen a looser, more happy go lucky group of football players as the PLU Lutes.

Uh Oh blue.....look out now :) :) :)

From the Linfield Football home page concerning the call on the field goal attempt:

The third quarter was defined by controversial play with 6:46 to go. Scott Birkhofer (Sr., Boring, Ore.) attempted a 29-yard field-goal that was blocked and then recovered by Linfield's Russell Sells (Jr., Folsom, Calif.) at the WOU 3.

The call initially gave Linfield a first down but after the officials sorted things out, Western Oregon was rewarded possession at the 20 yard-line. It was ruled that the kick was blocked in front of the neutral zone, resulting in a dead ball and a Western Oregon possession.
