Now, now, boys.  Hauschka may be in the NFL, and he may have won a Super Bowl, but he played soccer through high school.  He was never All City, so by definition, he will never be a football player.  QED.

Even without a Super Bowl ring, WCD is twice the player Hauschka could ever be.  Let's all just concede that so we can move on.

Can a poster still be a poster if they can't figure out how to properly use the quote function?

The story, as I've heard it, is that Hauschka sent inquiries to 30 DI schools and only heard back from 3 of them.  The AD at N.C. State at the time was Lee Fowler who was one of my best friends at Vandy.  "Middlebury College" just might have caught his eye.  Just saying.  Steven/Stephen/Steve....I never hear from you.  You don't don't call.  You don't write.  You don't answer your phone.  Where's the love? ::) ::) ;)

Actually Tom O'Brien was the BC coach and offered Hauschka and when O'Brien went to NC State, Hauschka went with him. (Offered after he graduated Middlebury)

Hey Polar Cat,

My cousin (RIP) has TWO SUPER BOWL RINGS.  1 while with the Rams.  The other with Ravens.  Worked in the S.I.D. department.

Was not a football player either.

At work today, I asked this guy....pretty smart guy too (unlike me).... I said, "Paul....is a punter or place kicker....a football player or a specialist"?

He blurted out...."Specialist!"

So, now he's not so smart I told him.  Lol

Ask him if a punter is a football player or a baseball player.  You might be surprised with his answer.

The holder is usually the backup QB.

The longsnapper is a dicey one.  At first thought....No....but in lieu that he actually wears pads , makes tackles and a flag isn't thrown for knocking him on his rear......

But, no.....that position is a specialist that is dependent on needing a punter.

Since we really don't need a punter.....we really don't need a long snapper.

Punter actually wears pads. Punters actually make tackles (again see Joey Julius). There is a flag for knocking a lingsnapper on his rear, in fact it is also called interference.

But based on your interpretation here, I assume that you believe a team should never punt, never kick a field goal, never kick a PAT and presumably always inside kick. I assume this because of your belief that these players punters and kickers are unnecessary and thus the long snapper is also unnecessary, as you stated above. Please enlighten us to your lofty football understanding that the rest of us are clearly not privy yet.

Hey West Coast -

What's your view on longsnappers? I figure you would love to pull some crazy logic about their pointlessness and not-actual-football-player status? They don't even score points but only perform one unique task on two types of plays. They definitely aren't players. (hard sarcasm in case you missed it)

Retired Mule-

Thanks for bringing the Long Snapper question up- I've got to respond on this, its a job that is near and dear to my heart.

No question that Long Snappers are Football players. They are a hybrid that combines as many Football skills as any other position. Blocking, covering kicks, tackling in addition to  handling the football with a unique skill that even All City DBs from the left coast could not master. Many football skills are combined in the LS position-----it's football..... and there is a ton of pressure to boot with little or nothing in the way of accolades.

If a LS is not a football plyer then take anyone  who covers kicks or plays on punt return out of the category of a Football player. The LS does more than any of the other 5 OL's on a punt because he's got an added responsibility.....hes got to send a 15 yard bullet back to the  Punter,,,,, and then perform the same job as the other 5 interior lineman and anyone else on special teams.

West Coast Contrarian you are losing Football players and positions pretty quickly as you expound on who is a Football Player.
If we boil it down to your analysis of who is a "Football Player" we will be playing 6 man football.

I guess a lot of posters challenged you on your position here and you and chose to take even more of a contrarian position than you started with. Probably best to pack it in now.....

But let me say you have really livened up this board and that's great.  I enjoy your input. Though in disagreement on this particular issue I love the way you stir it up....go Long Beach State and.....good night George Allen wherever you are!

Moving on, as someone who respects the skills of the LS position there are a lot of good ones but the kid at Bates right now MacDonald is as good as I have ever seen in the NESCAC. Consistent, especially in adverse weather conditions. He's better than Dick Leavitt who played at Bowdoin in the 70's and went on to the NY Giants......more than you wanted to know but there it is.

Good games, good weather and no injuries throughout the NESCAC on Saturday.

Not to interupt this "titalating" stream of board posts, we will be posting our predictions later this evening.

I am sure that may disappoint some of you who enjoy the M-F "diarrhea" of inane, barely football related posts. But we digress...    :-*

PolarCat

NESCACMEN, bring it on.  Your own diarrhea will blend right in.  Besides, all the diarrhea we serve up here is better than what Donald and Hillary spewed last night, and I have 40 retired Generals and Admirals who will agree.

That will be refreshing NESCACMAN.  Congratulations on that 200th post, btw.  Now you're a player.

Before NESCACMEN hit 200, were they a specialist?
